Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Stiff Blade: Designed for effective scraping of paint and putty.
  • High-Quality Carbon Steel Blade: Hardened for added durability and long-lasting performance.
  • Overmold Comfort Grip: Provides a secure and comfortable hold during use.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Applying compound. It has no flex and no apply role. It is the opposite tool to the 2" flexible putty knife, which lays material down; the 06221 takes material off. Do not confuse it with its putty-knife lookalike.
  • Broad flat fields as a coverage tool. Two inches is a boundary width, not an acreage width; step up to the 3" chisel (06401) or 4" 02600 for genuinely large failed fields.
  • Exterior field scraping on wood you're keeping. That's a pull scraper's controlled plane, not a push blade's drive.
  • Struck rabbet work and prying. The Hammer Head® sets fasteners only; struck glazing demolition is the 40210 hacking knife, prying is the 45600 bar.
  • Detail inside profiles and channels. Two inches won't enter a muntin or a molding curve — use a narrow or contour tool.

How the pros run it

01

Grip

overmold in the palm, finger along the spine for controlled boundary passes, full fist for power. Angle: low, 15–30° — shear, don't chisel. Direction: push to drive, pull to control near edges. Read the transition: the skill this width rewards is feeling, through the handle, the moment the edge crosses from failed to sound paint — and stopping there. Edge care: high-carbon files to a keen square edge and holds it, but dulls on old coatings; dress it with a mill file when it rolls or dents, because a nicked edge telegraphs into the surface. Rust: carbon steel — dry it after wet work, oil it lightly between jobs. Hammer Head®: for setting fasteners and dimpling holes, not for demolition or for striking the blade like a chisel.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What's the difference between this and the 2" stiff putty knife?
The putty knife has a flexible compound-spreading twin and no Hammer Head®; the 06221 is a dedicated scraper with a nail-setting boss and no apply role. Same silhouette, opposite job emphasis.
Why is 2" the size people reach for?
It finds the boundary between failed and sound paint better than anything wider — concentrated enough to feel the transition, wide enough to clear a zone.
06221 or 06151?
Faces and boundary-tracing → 2" 06221; tight, hard, local spots → 1-1/2" 06151.
06221 or the 3" 06401?
When the failed field is genuinely broad, or you want a chisel edge to shave flat residue, step up to the 3". For finding boundaries and general interior work, the 2" is the better feel.
Will it rust?
Yes — high-carbon. Dry and oil it. The reward is an edge that files keener than stainless.
Lead paint?
Pre-1978 coats carry lead and dry-scraping is regulated; paid pre-1978 work means certification, containment, wet methods, HEPA cleanup — inherited line-level boundary, not re-verified here.
