  • Filling and finishing. Stiff, wide, no flex, no apply role — it pulls compound out of hollows and leaves ridges. Spackle and skim are the flexible joint knives' job.
  • Boundary-tracing a small failure. Three inches bridges the failed-to-sound line; drop to the 2" (06221) or 1-1/2" (06151) to find boundaries.
  • The heaviest, prying, full-tang duty. The 06401 is not full-tang; for maximum blade mass and the roughest dedicated scraping, that's the 4" 02600, and prying is the 45600 bar's job.
  • Struck rabbet demolition. The Hammer Head® sets fasteners; struck glazing work is the 40210 hacking knife.
  • The exterior siding field pass. Push chisel breaks failures; the pull scraper planes the field.

How the pros run it

Grip and drive

overmold in the palm, full fist for power, push from the shoulder — a 3" blade wants body weight behind it. Angle: low, 15–30°. Bevel orientation: flat back to the surface to shave residue flush; roll the bevel toward the work only to bite and lift a thick plate. Keep it loaded: on uneven stock, narrower bites keep the whole edge in contact so the corners aren't ploughing alone. Edge care: high-carbon files to a keen chisel edge and holds it, but dulls on old paint and dents on grit — dress it square with a mill file the moment it rolls; a single-bevel edge is dressed on its bevel side. Rust: carbon, not stainless — dry it after wet or solvent work and keep a light oil film on it. Hammer Head®: sets fasteners and dimples holes; it is not a demolition hammer and does not license striking the blade like a struck chisel.

What does the chisel edge do that a plain scraper doesn't?
Its single bevel and flat back let it shave residue and ridges flush with the surface without corner-gouging — better for clearing broad flats and shaving crater rims clean.
06401 or the 4" 02600?
Both are chisel scrapers. The 06401 is the comfortable, nail-setting patch-day tool (overmold, Hammer Head®, 3"); the 02600 is the full-tang, bare-handled, no-Hammer-Head heavy excavator (4"). Patch day → 06401; dedicated heavy scraping → 02600.
06401 or the 3" stainless 06408?
Same tool, different steel. Carbon (06401) files keener and restores faster but rusts; stainless (06408) shrugs off water and strippers with no after-care. Dry work → 06401; wet, washed, or chemical work → 06408.
06401 or the 2" 06221?
Wider and chisel-edged (06401) for broad fields and flush residue; narrower and square-edged (06221) for finding the failed-to-sound boundary.
Will it rust?
Yes — high-carbon. Dry and oil it. The reward is the keener edge.
Lead paint?
Pre-1978 coats carry lead; dry-scraping is regulated. Paid pre-1978 work means certification, containment, wet methods, HEPA cleanup — inherited line-level boundary, not re-verified here.
