✕DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
Filling and finishing. Stiff blade, no flex, no apply role — it pulls compound out of hollows instead of laying it down. Spackle and skim are the flexible joint knives' job.
Broad flat fields. An inch and a half is slow over a wide failure; step up to the 2" (06221) or the 3" chisel (06401), or the 4" 02600, when the field is genuinely large.
Struck rabbet work and prying. The Hammer Head® sets fasteners; it does not license hammering the blade's spine along a glazing rabbet (that is the 40210 hacking knife's job) or prying with the edge (that is the 45600 bar's).
The exterior siding field pass. Push scrapers break failures; on wood you intend to keep, the controlled field pass belongs to a pull scraper — read the exterior siding guide.
How the pros run it
01
Grip
the overmold sits in the palm; index finger along the blade's spine for angle control on precision work, full fist behind it for power. Angle: low, 15–30°, so the edge shears rather than chisels. Direction: push for power, pull for control near an edge you don't want to hit. Pressure-per-inch is the whole reason to pick this size — lean into it, because the narrow edge is built to take concentrated force into a hard, local failure. Edge care: high-carbon steel takes and holds a keen scraping edge but dulls on old paint; dress it square with a mill file the moment it rolls or dents. Rust: carbon, not stainless — wipe it dry after wet or solvent work and keep a light oil film on it between jobs. Hammer Head® discipline: the boss is sized to set popped fasteners and dimple holes, not to demolish; it is not a framing hammer, and the blade is still a hand-push tool, never a struck chisel along a rabbet.
Asked at the counter
BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What's the Hammer Head® for?
Setting popped nails and screws and dimpling holes while you scrape, without picking up a hammer. On a ladder it's the feature you notice most.
06151 or the 2" 06221?
Width. Tight, local, hard spots and maximum pressure per inch → 06151. Working faces and finding the failed-to-sound boundary → 06221.
06151 or the Value 04151, both 1-1/2"?
The 06151 is the pro tool — Hammer Head®, overmold, built to be filed back and kept. The 04151 is the honest one-job scraper. If you'll use it past this weekend, the 06151 earns it.
Will it rust?
Yes, it's high-carbon — wipe it dry after wet work and oil it lightly between jobs. That's the tax for an edge that files keener than stainless.
Can I fill a hole with it?
No. It's stiff and it's a scraper; filling is the flexible knife's job, one step later in the sequence.
Lead paint?
Pre-1978 buildings carry lead in the old coats; dry-scraping it is regulated work. Paid pre-1978 jobs require a certified firm, containment, wet methods, and HEPA cleanup — inherited line-level boundary, not re-verified here.
