Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Precision Scraping: Stiff blade allows for precise removal of paint and putty in tight or delicate areas.
  • Non-Sparking: Ideal for use in applications where sparking could be an issue.
  • Comfort Grip: Overmolded handle provides a secure and comfortable grip during use.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Edge life or hard, heavy scraping. Brass is soft and dulls fast; for durability and heavy removal, use a carbon or stainless steel scraper. Never pick brass when the site doesn't require it.
  • A safety permit. Brass is not a permit. A non-sparking tool removes one ignition source; it does not make an atmosphere safe and does not replace gas testing, ventilation, hot-work permitting, or confined-space procedure. Follow the site's rules; the tool is one line item in them.
  • Filling and finishing. Stiff blade, no flex, no apply role — this is a removal tool only.
  • Striking and prying. No Hammer Head®, no struck use, no levering — brass is softer and even less forgiving of it than steel.
  • Broad-field coverage. At 1-1/4" it is slow over a wide area; the wider brass member (06421) covers more where the environment still requires brass.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Grip and angle

overmold in the palm, finger along the spine for control; low angle, 15–30°, to shear rather than dig. Expect to dress it often: brass dulls quickly — carry a file and dress the edge frequently; that is normal for brass and not a defect. Let the blade be the soft one: on delicate substrates the softness is the feature — ease the pressure and let the edge give to the surface rather than forcing it. Non-sparking is one control, not the only one: see §4 — the tool reduces one ignition source and does nothing about the others. Keep it clean: brass doesn't rust, but wipe residue off so the blade reads true against the work.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why would I buy a brass scraper?
Only for non-sparking environments — refineries, solvent rooms, fuel and gas work, combustible-dust areas — or to scrape delicate surfaces without gouging. If your site doesn't require it, buy steel.
Does brass hold an edge?
No — it's soft and dulls fast. That's the trade for non-sparking. Carry a file and expect to dress it often.
Does a brass tool make the area safe?
No. It removes one ignition source. Gas testing, ventilation, and hot-work permits are what make the atmosphere safe; the tool just complies with them.
06081 or the wider 06421?
Narrow detail and tight access → 1-1/4" 06081; broad flat area in a spark-controlled job → the wider 06421.
Is this really a putty knife?
The package says so. The catalog calls it a scraper; the package image reads "putty knife." It's a stiff removal blade — the label reflects the shared silhouette, not an apply role.
Lead paint?
The RRP and lead rules apply to brass exactly as to steel — pre-1978 coats, wet methods, containment, HEPA cleanup, certification for paid work — inherited line-level boundary, not re-verified here.
