CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Nothing in this series removes anything, and the 05520 is no exception: paint, drips, labels, wallpaper paste, and old glazing all defeat a polypropylene edge by being harder than it.
  • It is also not the finish-coat blade for repairs it fills — a 2" coat over a 2" fill lands its edges in the wet work, so the widening coats go to the 4" and 6".
  • Daily professional fill work belongs a tier up on spring steel.
  • And it is not a notched spreader: adhesives specifying a notch route to 05532/05534 regardless of how even a flat film looks to the eye.

How the pros run it

01

The one-wipe discipline

2" earns its keep by finishing small fields in single strokes — load enough material to complete the stroke, because stopping mid-wipe on a sprung plastic blade leaves a stutter line that steel would have muscled through. Corner awareness: this is the first width in the line wide enough for the corners to wander onto sound surface during a careless wipe; keep the flaw centered under the edge. Spring management: press to contact, let the molded flex — not wrist angle — feather the margin. Cleanup honesty: water-based material, rinse before it skins and the tool is new again; adhesives and two-part material, do not negotiate — "toss when finished" is the manufacturer's own sentence and the entire point of the tier.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Is this the size to buy if I'm buying one?
For patch-shaped problems, yes — 2" covers doorknob-class damage the smaller width can't while still filling a plain nail hole acceptably. If your problems are all pinpoint, the 1-1/2" wastes less; if they're all spreading, start at 3".
What's actually different from the 1-1/2"?
Width, and the two jobs width decides: this one out-spans a palm-sized patch in one pass; that one follows tight contours with less corner overhang. Everything else — material, flex, cleanup, limits — is identical by construction, and distrust any listing that claims otherwise.
Can it strip the old paint around the patch first?
No — the blade is the softer party in that transaction. Stripping is stiff steel's job (02150-class); this tool arrives after.
Which kit is it in?
The 05615 (2", 4", 6"), as its smallest rung. It is not in the 05610 — that pack's patch blade is the 1-1/2".
Cove base adhesive — this or a notched spreader?
Read the pail. Named notch size → 05532/05534. "Apply a thin, even coat" → this width fits the strip, and the tool is disposable by design afterward.
Will it survive being cleaned?
Water-based material rinses off completely and the tool lasts indefinitely — Hyde's durability language is real for spackle duty. It's the adhesives and two-part materials that end a blade's career, which is why the same catalog line ends "or toss when finished."
