  • Scraping — of anything, ever.
  • The blade is softer than dried paint, so dried paint wins; there is no stiff member of this series and no technique that changes the material.
  • Prying, chiseling, glazing-bead removal, popped-nail resetting: all hard-edge work, all elsewhere.
  • Repeated professional fill work is the subtler exclusion — the 05510 does a one-timer's fill honestly, but a finisher filling holes daily should be on the steel ladder (04101 at minimum), where the edge stays thin and true through months of use.
  • And nothing in this guide's adhesive section overrides a notch spec: pails that name a notch route to the notched line, full stop.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Grip

fingertips, not fist — a 1-1/2" blade filling a nail hole is a precision instrument at pea-scale loads, and choking up on the tool keeps the wipe honest. Angle: load and press with the blade steep, wipe flush with it low and sprung; the spring is the feathering mechanism, so let the flex do the last pass rather than your wrist. Two-direction packing: always press cavities from two angles; single-direction fills bridge. The wet-edge rule: wipe the surround before anything skins — every minute of delay converts wet forgiveness into dry sanding. End of job: water-based material, rinse now, not after lunch; anything solvent-based or two-part, let it skin and throw the tool away — that outcome is printed on the family as a feature, not a failure.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Is this a putty knife?
It does a putty knife's filling job in disposable form, but it is not a knife — no steel, no ground edge, no tang. Hyde files it under spreading tools, and the distinction is load-bearing: it will never scrape.
Can I scrape off the old paint first with it?
No. A polypropylene edge is softer than cured paint; the paint wins. Scraping belongs to stiff steel (02150-class), after which this tool fills what's left.
Rinse it or toss it?
The material decides. Water-based spackle and filler: rinse, reuse indefinitely. Adhesives and anything two-part: let it skin and throw it away — that is the catalog's own sentence, not an admission of defeat.
Which combo pack contains this width?
The 05610 (1-1/2", 3", 6" — one catalog description line disagrees; verify the physical pack). The 05615 carries no 1-1/2".
I fill holes every month on the job — is this enough tool?
Honestly, no. Step up to the spring-steel 04101 at the same width; the Economy tier is for toss-after work, one-timers, and scratch-sensitive surroundings.
Will construction adhesive or epoxy ruin it?
It will ruin the blade's afternoon, not your kit — cured material either peels off polypropylene or the tool goes in the trash still wearing it. Both outcomes are the design.
