Respect the softer edge

Brass will not hold an edge like carbon or stainless — expect to dress it more often, and don't force it through material that wants a steel scraper (you'll only deform the brass). Work with the softness; it's protecting your workpiece. Flat face to the work, bevel up. As with any chisel edge, the single flat face rides the surface and keeps the edge from gouging. Low angle, let it shave. The bevel slips under; don't chop. Keep it non-sparking in practice. The safety benefit assumes brass — don't file it on a steel-contaminated wheel or let steel swarf embed in the soft face, which can defeat the non-spark property; dress it clean. Maintain the bevel on the bevel side only, and keep the flat true.

Why brass instead of steel?

Same size and grind; choose brass only if you need non-sparking or won't risk marring a soft surface. For everything else the carbon chisel cuts better and lasts longer.
Does anything defeat the non-spark property?
Embedding steel particles in the soft face (e.g., grinding on a steel-contaminated wheel) can — dress it clean.
