Job: make a traceable trial adjustment to a known coating, mix it uniformly, prepare a controlled sample, compare the sample with an approved target, and either accept the batch or repeat the documented cycle without guessing.
Time: the exact coating and colorant documents determine mixing, conditioning, sample-evaluation, recoat, and cure time. There is no honest universal duration.
Difficulty: moderate. The hand motion is simple; material authorization, measurement discipline, and knowing when a batch is no longer recoverable are the work.
Their official variant names establish three widths; current accepted product evidence does not establish a container-capacity ladder, blade geometry, reach, chemical compatibility, color neutrality after cleaning, or a tinting formula.
“Add a little color until it looks right” is not a formula. Paint bases, colorant systems, and coating chemistries are not interchangeable. PPG directs users of its machine-dispensed 96-Line colorants to the applicable tint system; Benjamin Moore identifies proprietary colorants for ADVANCE; a Corotech TDS permits limited universal colorant yet warns that its base will not reproduce color-system formulas. The rule is the exact coating and colorant documents decide the operation.
Build the control set before starting:
Identify the coating exactly. Record manufacturer, product line, product code, base designation, finish or sheen, container size, color/formula label, lot or batch identifier, and current container quantity if the job procedure requires it. A color name alone is not identity. A deep base and a white base carrying similar retail labels are not substitutes.
Identify the colorant exactly. Record manufacturer, system or series, individual colorant code, lot where available, and the dispensing method the system requires. “Universal colorant” is not a permission slip; that term must appear in the exact coating's current instructions, together with any limit or method that controls its use.
Match each document to the container. The coating label, coating TDS, coating SDS, colorant-system instructions, and colorant SDS must all apply to the exact products present. OSHA's SDS structure makes the division useful: Section 1 identifies the product and restrictions; Sections 2, 7, and 8 carry hazards, handling, engineering controls, and PPE; Section 10 identifies reactivity and incompatibilities; Section 13 may carry disposal information. If the documents do not match, stop.
Define the target. Use an approved physical standard, prior batch sample, specified color standard, or other controlled target.
Define the acceptance method before tinting. Record whether acceptance is visual, instrumented, or both; the specified sample substrate and preparation; the application method; the coating's required evaluation stage; the defined viewing or measurement setup; and any project tolerance.

This guide does not cover raw-pigment formulation, retail tint-machine operation, off-spec production correction, damaged-coating restoration, or catalyzed-system alteration. A visual match does not certify gloss, texture, hide, metamerism, weathering, or service performance.
Set up the batch record and controlled trial
Freeze the starting state
Assign a unique batch ID and write it on the trial container and log. Photograph or transcribe the source labels and the target identifier. Record the quantity removed for the trial using the project's approved method. If the quantity cannot be measured well enough for the authorized dispensing method, make a larger trial or use the colorant supplier's approved small-volume equipment; do not compensate by estimating tinier additions.
Preserve an untouched portion when the job plan requires a baseline or recovery reference. Never return failed trials to it.
Condition the starting coating exactly as directed
Bring the source coating to uniform condition using its label/TDS method before splitting the trial. Tinting an incompletely mixed base produces a trial whose binder, pigment, and additives do not represent the source can. “The surface looks uniform” is not enough when settled material remains below.
Do not use this guide to choose a mixing speed, time, powered mixer, thinner, or temperature. Follow the exact coating instruction. If the product cannot reach its specified uniform state by the permitted method, stop; adding colorant cannot repair it.
Choose among the three spatulas by verified physical fit
The official Hyde evidence identifies 41010 as 3/8", 41060 as 5/8", and 41110 as 1" paint spatulas. It does not assign them to pots, quarts, or cans. At the clean station, choose the member that:
enters the actual trial container freely without forcing or modifying the tool;
can reach and sweep the material that must be blended;
can be controlled without contacting a contaminated rim or unstable container; and
is permitted by the coating/colorant documents and the workplace procedure.
If more than one fits, use the one that gives controlled movement without overflow. If none fits, change to an approved container or method. Do not infer chemical suitability or rely on unverified length, tip shape, flexibility, offset, or profile.
Before contact, verify that the selected spatula and container are clean to the job's documented standard. A visually wiped tool is not proven free of previous color or incompatible residue. When cross-color neutrality matters, the project procedure must supply the validated cleaning or dedication rule.
Make and label a baseline sample
Before any colorant enters the trial, prepare a baseline sample from the conditioned starting coating. Use the specified substrate, preparation, application tool, number of coats, and film-control method. Label it with the batch ID, BASELINE, application date/time, and evaluation-ready time determined from the exact coating instruction.
The baseline shows what the starting coating produced and helps separate a tint change from inconsistent sample preparation. Do not judge it before the required evaluation stage.
The controlled add–mix–sample–readback loop
Plan one authorized addition
Start from the approved formula, supplier correction, or other authorized colorant direction if one exists. This guide does not teach a universal red/green, blue/orange, black/white, or complementary-color correction rule; real colorants vary in strength, undertone, opacity, and effect on the coating.
Record the planned colorant identity and planned amount before dispensing. The amount and unit come from the approved dispensing system or project method. There is no universal drop size, increment, percentage, or “one drop per cup” rule.
Dispense and read back the actual addition
Use the authorized, verified dispensing or measuring device. Record the actual amount delivered, not merely the intended amount. If a dispenser faults, a drop hangs at the nozzle, a scale drifts, or the amount cannot be read back, mark the trial measurement uncertain and stop adding. Do not reconstruct the dose from memory.
Keep each colorant and tool identified. Do not dip the spatula into a colorant reservoir unless expressly permitted. Prevent nozzle crust, dust, or another batch from entering the trial.

Never silently convert between dispenser units, volume, mass, “shots,” or drops.
Blend by coverage, not by a universal stroke count
Introduce the spatula slowly. Work through the whole trial volume: container wall, bottom, center, and any wall-bottom junction the actual tool can reach. Draw material from one zone into another, fold it through the body, and return material clinging to the tool to the trial. Keep the motion controlled enough to avoid splashing or entraining visible air.
Continue for the time or method the exact system requires. Where it supplies no stroke pattern, use qualitative coverage checks: no isolated colorant streaks; no visibly different material on the wall or bottom; and a small lift from different regions presenting a uniform appearance. These checks show only that no obvious nonuniformity remains. They do not prove chemical compatibility, color acceptance, cure, or performance.
If streaks persist, determine whether the authorized process permits more mixing. Do not add another colorant while the previous addition is visibly nonuniform. A second correction added to a half-mixed first correction destroys the measurement chain.
Prepare the cycle sample consistently
Give the sample a unique ID tied to the cycle. Apply it beside—not over—the baseline and earlier samples, using the same controlled substrate preparation, applicator, film method, and coat sequence. Record any deviation immediately. A sample made with a different tool, substrate, film build, or timing is evidence of a different process.
Do not use the spatula as the sample applicator unless the project method specifies that method. The spatula's role in this row is controlled small-batch blending. A match intended for brushing, rolling, spraying, or another application must be sampled by the specified production-representative method.
Hold until the specified evaluation point
Protect the sample from mix-ups and hold it to the exact evaluation stage required by the coating maker or project procedure. Record when it becomes eligible. No universal dry-time or wet-to-dry rule applies.
If the sample is disturbed, contaminated, coated too heavily or lightly, or evaluated outside the defined conditions, mark it invalid and remake it from the same documented batch. Do not “mentally correct” a bad sample.
Compare and record the readback
Place the target, baseline, and cycle sample into the predeclared comparison method. For a visual method, use the project's defined viewing setup and named approver. For an instrumented method, use the specified instrument, calibration check, geometry, sample orientation, measurement locations, and acceptance calculation. Record raw observations or readings and the decision rule; do not substitute a generic light source, color-space formula, or tolerance from another job.
Give the cycle one of four dispositions:
ACCEPT: it meets the named acceptance rule.
CONTINUE: an authorized next adjustment is selected and another full cycle will be run.
REJECT: the trial cannot be corrected within the authorized process or retained performance limits.
“Looks better” may be an observation, but it is not an acceptance receipt unless the project procedure defines the observer and criterion.
Repeat without losing the denominator
For a continuing trial, begin a new log row before adding anything. Preserve every cumulative addition and sample ID. Make only one documented decision cycle at a time: plan, dispense, read back, mix fully, sample, hold, compare, disposition.
Never pour back unmeasured baseline coating, add an unnamed “touch,” or scale by mental arithmetic. Scaling requires an authorized calculation, accurate batch measurement, a recorded formula, and permitted final colorant loading.
Close the accepted batch
When accepted, record the final cumulative colorant additions, final quantity if required, target ID, sample ID, approver, acceptance method, time, and any instrument record. Label the accepted batch so it cannot be confused with the baseline, rejected trials, or an untinted base. Preserve the source labels, formula, and trial log with the coating.
Condition the accepted batch using the exact coating/colorant method, then prepare a final confirmation sample from the material that will actually be used. A match receipt belongs to the final mixed batch, not merely to an intermediate cup that looked right.
What goes wrong — and the controlled response
The first addition causes a large miss. Stop additions. Confirm coating base, trial quantity, colorant identity, dispensing unit, and actual dose. Do not attempt a universal opposite-color rescue. Preserve the trial for technical review.
The color is moving, but no one recorded the additions. The batch has lost traceability.
Streaks remain after mixing. Do not sample or add more colorant. Continue only within the authorized mixing method. Persistent nonuniformity is a compatibility, condition, or process escalation.
The sample and target match in one comparison but not another. Record both observations. This guide supplies no preferred light or tolerance.
Successive samples are inconsistent even without an addition. Audit sample preparation, substrate, applicator, film control, timing, and measurement setup. Until repeat samples agree under the defined method, tint decisions are not trustworthy.
The batch became too dark, strong, or otherwise passed the target. Do not claim that adding white, base, solvent, or an opposite color will universally restore it. Isolate it. A supplier-approved correction may exist; otherwise restart from a measured baseline.
The tool will not enter or reach the trial cleanly. Do not bend, grind, force, or assign a container size from the model's width. Change to an approved container or method.
Material from a previous color appears. Stop. Quarantine the trial and tool, document the contamination, and apply the project's cleaning/rejection rule. A wipe to visible metal is not proof of color neutrality.
The coating skins, gels, curdles, strings, smells abnormal, or contains debris. Close and isolate it under the product instructions. Do not strain, thin, tint, or mix it back to apparent smoothness.
The target is an aged wall while the batch is new paint. Record that condition. Color alone may not reproduce the existing film's sheen, texture, soil, fading, or prior application. The approver may require a larger representative sample or a full-surface repaint.
A formula is available, but the trial quantity is too small for the dispenser resolution. Do not round by eye. Increase the controlled trial size, use approved higher-resolution equipment, or have the supplier prepare it.
The full-batch scale-up does not confirm. Stop before application. Preserve both samples and all quantities; audit source-batch conditioning, scale calculation, dispensing, and mixing. The small trial's acceptance does not waive final-batch readback.
Cleanup, storage, and disposal
Keep the exact document controls in force after the color decision. The coating and colorant labels/TDS/SDS—not the word “paint,” the color, or this guide—specify ventilation, PPE, spill response, cleaning material, ignition controls, storage, and waste handling. Do not assume water, soap, mineral spirits, or any other cleaner. Do not mix cleanup materials.
Remove usable accepted coating from the spatula only by the product-approved method and return it to the accepted batch only if the contamination-control procedure permits. Never return sample material, rejected trial material, cleanup liquid, or material from an uncertain tool to the accepted batch or original source.
Preserve their source identity. Clean or dedicate the selected spatula according to the validated project method; if no method proves it suitable for the next color or chemistry, do not make that transfer. The current Hyde evidence does not rate these spatulas for a coating chemistry or establish a universal cleaner.
Dispose of unwanted coating, colorant, samples, wipes, and cleanup material through the exact manufacturer instructions and the rules applicable to the waste and location. This guide does not prescribe sink, drain, trash, recycling, hazardous-waste, or rag handling because those answers vary by product and jurisdiction.
Which spatula should I use?
Choose among 41010, 41060, and 41110 by verified physical fit and controllability in the actual approved trial container. Their official widths do not establish a pot/quart/can assignment.
How much colorant should I add first?
Only the amount produced by the authorized formula, supplier correction, or controlled project method. There is no universal first increment or drop size.
Can I use universal colorant in any latex paint?
The exact coating TDS must authorize the exact colorant system and its limits. Current manufacturer instructions demonstrate that proprietary, named-system, universal-only, and non-controlled tint bases all exist.
How do I know it is mixed?
Meet the exact system's mixing instruction and verify qualitative full-volume coverage with no visible streaks or region differences. That is a mixing check, not a color or performance acceptance.
Should I judge the paint wet or dry?
Judge it at the evaluation stage named by the exact coating or project method. This guide supplies no universal waiting time or dry-shift rule.
What lighting should I use?
Use the project's declared viewing or instrument conditions. If none exist, document the conditions and report comparisons without inventing a universal pass condition.
What color difference is acceptable?
No universal visual or numerical tolerance is authorable here.
Can I scale a successful sample directly into the full can?
Only through an authorized calculation using measured quantities, permitted colorant loading, adequate dispenser resolution, and final-batch confirmation. Otherwise hand the sample and log to the supplier.
Can I clean one spatula and use it for another color?
Only if the validated cleaning/dedication procedure permits it.
Can I tint two-part or catalyzed paint this way?
Not unless that exact system explicitly authorizes tinting at this exact stage and supplies the component, sequence, timing, and compatibility instructions.
History footnote
Modern retail tinting preserves the controls this hand workflow needs: the correct base, a stored recipe, metered colorants, and homogeneous mixing. The 1995 U.S. paint-tinting apparatus patent 5,460,297 emphasizes repeatable metering of small colorant volumes into a larger base. The spatula does not replace that system; it carries the same control logic onto the bench.
