How to Tear Out Old Resilient Flooring

Job: get old linoleum, sheet vinyl, or resilient tile off the floor — wear layer, backing felt, and all — down to a subfloor you can honestly assess for whatever comes next.

On the floor they were always one job.

Time: a small bathroom in an afternoon. A full-spread-bonded kitchen is a weekend, because scraping felt off a glue line takes several times as long as pulling the sheet did. A perimeter-bonded floor comes up in an hour and makes you feel briefly immortal. None of these clocks start until the Step 1 question is answered.

Difficulty: labor, not skill — knees, back, and blade discipline. The one judgment call that matters happens before any tool touches the floor.

Everything else: an accredited asbestos inspection and lab test where Step 1 requires it — that is a licensed service, not a store product · heat gun for stubborn tiles and corners (tested-clean floors only) · mill file, because the demo blades here are resharpenable · knee pads, gloves, and safety glasses (non-negotiable — this whole job happens at lap height with steel under load) · N95 for nuisance dust on a tested-clean floor · garden mister · contractor bags or a dumpster — resilient debris is far heavier than it looks · pliers or nippers for staples · a shop vac for the finish. If the underlayment is coming out with the flooring, that's saw work, and this store doesn't sell the saw — an honest list says so.

Before you start: the 1980 question, then the archaeology

The asbestos boundary — the reason this guide starts here and not at the fun part. Old resilient flooring is one of the places asbestos genuinely lives in American homes: 9"×9" (and some 12"×12") vinyl-asbestos and asphalt tile, the felt backing under old sheet goods, and the adhesives beneath both — above all the black, tarry "cutback" adhesive troweled under mid-century floors — may all contain it, because the industry added asbestos fiber to strengthen exactly these materials (Minnesota Dept. of Health — Residential Floor Tile Removal). Left intact and undisturbed, such a floor is not considered hazardous. A tear-out is the definition of disturbance: strip-cutting, chiseling, scraping, and snapping tile is precisely how a nonfriable material gets crumbled and its fibers get airborne. So the rule, exactly as the federal and state guidance gives it: if the floor — or the building — plausibly predates the mid-1980s and you cannot document what the material is, treat it as suspect and have it sampled by a trained, accredited asbestos professional before any tool touches it. You cannot identify asbestos by eye; a lab can. EPA's homeowner guidance is blunt on both halves: leave undamaged material alone, and when a remodel will disturb suspect material, bring in trained and qualified people (EPA — Protect Your Family from Exposures to Asbestos). The steps in this guide resume on exactly three floors: one that tested clean, one you can document as post-boundary new, or one a licensed contractor has already abated. And a standing rule for mid-job: if unexpected black adhesive or an older layer surfaces under the floor you tested, stop there — the test covered what you sampled, not what was hiding beneath it.

Read the floor you actually have. Three constructions, three removal stories. Resilient tile (VCT and its ancestors) pops piece by piece — no strip-cutting; it goes straight to the hammer scraper in Step 7. Perimeter-bonded sheet — adhesive at edges and seams only, common under 1980s-and-later vinyl — releases in huge satisfying pulls once the glued border is cut. Full-spread-bonded sheet (and glue-down carpet-class goods) is the long version this guide is built around: strip-cut, peel, then scrape the backing that stays. Diagnose at a closet corner or floor register: work a blade under an edge and pull. Whole thickness releases → perimeter-bonded. The face delaminates and leaves fuzzy felt → full-spread, two-lift job. Nothing moves at all → full-spread with conviction; sharpen everything.

Look under before you commit. The same test hole tells you what the goods are stuck *to*. Plywood or luan underlayment: decide now whether the underlayment leaves with the flooring — cutting the sandwich into panels and lifting both layers at once is often the fastest clean job and spares you the scraping entirely, but it's circular-saw work outside this catalog, and it only makes sense when the underlayment was due for replacement anyway. Board or plywood subfloor you're keeping: the scraping steps below, with angle discipline. Concrete: scrape without mercy — you can't gouge it — and know that the adhesive field afterward is its own guide (Step 8).

Clear the deck. Everything off the floor, appliances out — the flooring usually runs under the fridge and stove, so they move first, not last. Toilet off in a bathroom (the flange perimeter is always the worst-bonded spot in the room). Shoe molding or baseboard off if the new floor changes height — that removal done right is the trim puller's other guide (*Remove trim and molding for reuse*). Doors off their hinges if they swing over the work. Glasses and knee pads on before the first strike, not after the first sliver.

The removal

Open the edges (19460). Metal thresholds and transition strips first: wedge under, lift, advance — they're screwed or pinned, and they cover the sheet's cut edge, which is your best starting seam. Tack strip at carpet borders pops at its concrete pins. Then start the field: drive the puller's wedge under the goods at a doorway or corner until you've lifted a hand-hold of material. This is the 19460's claimed second trade — "tile, carpet and other types of flooring removal" — and its honest limit in the same breath: the puller opens the job; the field belongs to the tools below. It is a struck tool by design; swing with control and keep the off-hand behind its guard.

Strip-cut the field into lanes (20250 / 20550). Cut the sheet into pull-width lanes — 18 to 24 inches is the working default — running the length of the room. Pierce with the point, pull hard toward you, let the curved edge feed the cut. Every part of this abuses a knife tip: goods of unknown thickness, subfloor of unknown hardness underneath, side-loads the whole way, a freeing twist when the cut hangs up. That load case is the short point's entire design brief, and it's why the fine-spurred fitting knives stay in the pouch today. When the goods are mastic-backed, the 20550 earns its tier: adhesive-soaked material clamps ordinary blade cheeks mid-pull, and its hollow grind is the specific cure — keep the pull committed, because every stop lets the material re-grip. Cut lanes; don't pry with the knife. Lifting is the next two steps' work.

Peel and pull. Roll a lane's freed end back onto itself and pull low and steady — *down the lane*, not up toward the ceiling. A low angle shears adhesive; a high angle tears the face off the backing and hands the whole floor to the scraper. Perimeter-bonded sheet releases in full lanes. Full-spread modern vinyl usually delaminates no matter how well you pull — the wear layer comes away and the felt stays, which is normal, is the material's construction and not your failure, and is exactly why Step 8 exists. Real linoleum is stiffer and more brittle than vinyl: it leaves in slabs and shards rather than rolls, minds the cold, and releases more agreeably warm. Resilient tile skips the peel entirely — go straight at it with the hammer scraper: blade fully under an open edge or seam, drive, pop, advance tile by tile; gentle heat persuades a stubborn one to come whole instead of shattering.

Hammer-scrape the bonded backing (19430 / 19440). The felt, the welded lanes, the remnants: two-handed push-scraper work at the bond line — Hyde's own catalog word for these heads is *chiseling* off flooring materials such as tile and linoleum. Kneeling, the short-handled 19430 puts your shoulders directly over the blade; standing, the 19440's 48" reach saves your spine (the 54" 19450 is a height match, not an upgrade). Run the edge low, in short driving strokes, working from cleared floor into bonded material along the lane lines you already cut — a lane edge is a fresh bond line, and fresh bond lines are where scrapers win. The blade is the consumable and the economics: reversible, so flip it the moment strokes start skating instead of biting; resharpenable, so the mill file at lunch buys the afternoon back. The 6" 19452 drops onto the same heads and clears broad felt fields; the 4" 19451 concentrates the same force on the spots that fight.

Know where this job ends. With the goods up, the floor is a field of adhesive — ridges of yellowed sheet-vinyl glue, or a continuous black layer under mid-century floors. If that black layer wasn't in your test scope, Step 1's standing rule applies: stop and sample. Tested clean, it is still not a keep-scraping-until-done material: planing an adhesive field, what softens it honestly, the wet-scrape rhythm, and what "clean enough" means under each kind of new floor is its own complete guide — *Remove floor adhesive and mastic*, the offset scrapers' home job. This guide hands off there deliberately; half-treating mastic is how new floors fail twice. Same boundary sideways: if ceramic tile or a mortar bed surfaces under the resilient goods, that demolition is *Demolish ceramic tile and thinset* — struck-head work of a different order, with its own guide.

Triage the subfloor with a flashlight and a flat bar of daylight. Pull every staple and proud nail — sheet-vinyl underlayment was stapled generously, and one missed staple telegraphs through the next floor. Probe the water map: springy patches and dark rings at the toilet flange, sink line, and fridge corner are moisture history, and soft means carpentry before anything else goes down. On wood, check the underlayment's plies where the scraper worked — delaminated luan gets replaced in panels, not skimmed over. On concrete, tape a square of poly to the slab overnight; condensation underneath is a moisture conversation your new floor's spec sheet wants to have first. The stand-up finishing pass — dried adhesive ridges, compound drips, the flatness check ahead of new goods — belongs to the 55" floor scrapers and their own guide, *Scrape a subfloor flat for new flooring*.

Bag it out like an adult. Resilient debris is dense: load bags half-full or they fail at the door. Mist as you sweep so the felt dust stays down, wear the N95 for the nuisance dust even on a tested-clean job, vacuum rather than dry-sweep the last pass, and check your transfer station's rules — many have specific handling requirements for resilient flooring regardless of test results, and showing up with documentation beats arguing at the scale.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

"The wear layer peeled and left fuzzy felt over everything." Normal — that's the material's construction, not your technique. The felt is the hammer scraper's assignment; budget the time and keep pulling lanes.

"Strips keep snapping off short." Lanes too wide, pull angle too high, or the bond is continuous. Cut narrower lanes, pull lower and slower, and let the hammer scraper meet you where the pull loses.

"The hammer scraper skates instead of biting." The edge is done or your hands are too high. Flip the blade — it reverses for exactly this moment — file it at the next break, drop the handle so the edge attacks the bond line, and shorten the stroke.

"I'm gouging the plywood." Angle too steep with the corners loaded. Flatten the blade, take narrower bites — and on luan underlayment, admit early that trashed panels get replaced, not rescued.

"Tiles shatter instead of popping." Get the full blade width under before driving, work from an open seam instead of mid-tile, and warm a stubborn tile so it releases whole. Shards are still progress — just slower, and sharper: glasses.

If it tested clean, it's still the mastic guide's territory, not one more hour of this one.

"The knife binds mid-pull in the gluey stuff." Mastic-backed goods clamping flat blade cheeks — the 20550's hollow grind is the built cure. Either way, commit to the pull (stopping lets the material re-grip) and wipe the blade between lanes.

The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)

Every floor in this guide is one story at different ages.
