Job: collect chemically released finish and remover from furniture without erasing original surface evidence, cutting veneer, opening glue lines, damaging hardware, spreading contaminated sludge, or inventing the next chemical step.

Time: the chosen remover’s inspection and dwell instructions, the completed test patch, the number of coating layers, the furniture construction, and the prescribed cleanup and drying endpoints own every clock. This guide supplies no dwell, repeat, neutralization, drying, or recoat duration.

Difficulty: high consequence. Moving softened finish into a container is simple. Deciding whether the finish should be removed, whether the object can tolerate the chemistry, and whether a steel edge belongs on that surface is the work.

Decide whether stripping the furniture is an acceptable treatment

Preserve evidence before chasing bare wood

Photograph every face, edge, underside, hardware position, label, repair, worn handhold, and color transition. Record the coating condition and look beneath hardware or inside protected areas for earlier layers. The objective is not automatically “uniform bare wood.” It may be removing a later overcoat while retaining earlier paint, stain, filler, glaze, gilding, a decal, maker’s mark, or natural-resin finish.

The Canadian Conservation Institute states that original furniture finishes carry historical, aesthetic, and financial value and recommends against stripping wooden furniture as a default. Patina is not simply dirt: wear, oxidation, accumulated color, and tool evidence may belong to the object’s history. If the piece may be antique, attributed, rare, historically important, culturally sensitive, or valuable beyond ordinary utility, stop before a test patch and refer it to a qualified furniture conservator. The same stop applies to powdering pigment, gilding, urushi or other Asian lacquer, painted decoration, veneer marquetry, composition ornament, old repairs, or an original finish whose condition has not been assessed.

Diagnose finish, substrate, joints, and hardware as four separate systems

Finish: establish whether the visible layer is original, later, or unknown and identify the coating family or stack. Visual clues are leads, not a solvent test recipe. Do not improvise alcohol, lacquer thinner, acetone, alkali, heat, or another spot test. A specialist owns analytical identification when the distinction changes what may be preserved.

Substrate: distinguish solid wood from veneer, plywood, laminated stock, molded composition, plastic, fiberboard, metal, leather, cane, upholstery, and mixed construction. Locate veneer edges and bubbles, end grain, carved detail, cross-grain banding, inlay, filled pores, thin edges, and already-soft fibers.

Joints: map mortise-and-tenon joints, dovetails, loose blocks, applied moldings, veneer seams, plugged repairs, and any glue line the remover or cleanup liquid could reach. A sound face does not prove a hidden adhesive is compatible. Movement, a whitening glue line, raised veneer, or opening seam stops the test.

Hardware: decide what can be removed without damage. Photograph orientation, label parts, and keep each fastener with its location. Do not polish away patina or put handles, escutcheons, locks, casters, plated parts, upholstery tacks, or mixed-metal fittings into the furniture remover unless their own material and finish are identified and the exact product approves them. If hardware must remain, its metal, coating, masking material, and every seam exposed to runoff must pass the test system. A stained outline under hardware may be historical evidence, not a defect to erase.

Clear lead and conservation stops

Old painted furniture can contain lead even when a newer topcoat does not. EPA specifically identifies refinishing old furniture as a route for contaminating a home or carrying lead on hands and clothing. Test with an accepted method or manage the coating as lead-containing.

Movable furniture is not automatically an EPA RRP renovation. Built-in woodwork or paid work in pre-1978 target housing or a child-occupied facility can bring RRP scope into the job; determine applicability before removal. Regardless, isolate the work, prevent take-home contamination, prohibit food and drink, and exclude occupants.

Stop entirely for an object with potentially significant original finish; unstable veneer, inlay, marquetry, gilding, or decoration; unknown mixed materials; active insect or moisture damage; structural failure; or a coating whose lead and treatment status cannot be resolved.

Bind the remover and the shop before opening the can

“Paint stripper” is not a production identity. Record the manufacturer, exact product and formulation, relevant lot, current label/TDS/SDS revisions, and responsible-party contact. OSHA Hazard Communication requires a workplace SDS for each hazardous chemical. Read the whole document, then copy these controlling answers onto the job card:

approved coatings and furniture substrates, plus prohibited materials;

application tool and film-build or coverage instruction;

temperature and other use conditions;

inspection, dwell, covering, and reactivation directions;

approved removal tools and whether metal is permitted;

first aid and emergency wash;

fire classification, flash point, vapor behavior, incompatibilities, and ignition controls;

exposure limits, engineering controls, respirator conditions, glove material, eye and clothing protection;

spill control, storage, container compatibility, and disposal statements;

prescribed rinse, after-wash, neutralization, pH endpoint, drying condition, and next-coat preparation.

Methylene chloride, dichloromethane, DCM, or CAS 75-09-2 is a stop for this workflow. EPA ended consumer distribution of methylene-chloride paint removers and its 2024 rule prohibits most industrial and commercial uses. NIOSH’s furniture-stripping studies document lethal exposure potential and local-exhaust controls designed around particular tanks and rinse stations. Those case-study airflows are not portable shop recipes.

Admit the facility, not merely the product

A label saying “outdoor use” or “well ventilated” does not certify a solvent shop. For occupational work, the employer must maintain Hazard Communication, training, SDS access, exposure assessment, and the required controls. The facility assessment must resolve:

whether the work must occur outdoors, under local exhaust, or in another engineered enclosure;

how contaminated air is captured without passing workers or occupied spaces;

whether the vapor is heavier than air and can collect in pits, cabinets, tanks, or floor depressions;

whether fan, switch, light, heater, vacuum, tool, and other electrical equipment are suitable for the classified atmosphere;

how open flames, pilot lights, smoking, hot surfaces, static, and mechanical or electrical sparks are excluded from the possible vapor path;

chemical storage quantity and cabinet or storage-room requirements;

emergency washing, exits, extinguisher, spill response, and fire-department requirements;

where waste can be accumulated without mixing incompatibles.

OSHA’s flammable-liquids rule requires ignition control wherever flammable vapors may be present and contains distinct rules for storage rooms and points of use. Its storage-room air-change provision is not a stripping-bench ventilation rate.

Prove the furniture-specific system

Set containment and waste before the test

Support the object without clamping through fragile finish. Establish clean, active, and waste zones. The active zone needs a compatible raised-edge liner, a catch tray where runoff can occur, and clearance to turn parts without crossing the clean zone. Keep the labeled receiving vessel within controlled reach.

Containment must protect both the shop and the object. Do not flood drawer joints, hollow legs, lock mortises, upholstery, cane, end grain, or veneer seams. Do not use an unverified drop cloth as a liquid barrier. Do not let residue reach a floor drain, sink, soil, gutter, or storm sewer.

Run one complete test through the future finish handoff

Choose an inconspicuous location after the conservation gate passes. Include the relevant coating build and, when possible, a representative profile without sacrificing evidence. Follow the product exactly for application, film build, inspection, dwell, covering, and exposure control.

At the maker’s readiness point, use its approved probe. Readiness is qualitative but not imaginary: the finish must release in the manner the product describes while the underlying surface remains stable. Select one candidate scraper from the table only if metal is allowed and a steel edge is appropriate. The test must prove the complete interface—remover to finish, remover to substrate and glue, remover to hardware or masking, remover to containment, and remover to tool.

Complete the manufacturer’s exact collection, cleanup, neutralization if any, drying, and readiness checks. Inspect dry for color change, raised or compressed fibers, scratches, lost stain, opened pores, softened adhesive, veneer movement, metal discoloration, residue, odor outside the documented endpoint, and loss of original layer. The intended next-finish system must also accept the prepared test area.

Collect released finish without turning chemistry into damage

Select width and construction from the proved section

Use 01440 only on a tested broad, flat, robust field where its stainless edge bears cleanly. Drop to 01140 when the field narrows or the wide blade bridges. Use 07160 for a verified general-width hardwood-carbon system and 07060 for bounded narrow areas. Do not substitute 07210 because a patch resists; first re-evaluate the remover system, inspection state, coating stack, or cleanup.

Before each section, inspect for contamination, corrosion, edge damage, handle residue, or another condition that invalidates the test. Edge maintenance belongs to the tool’s separate procedure, in a clean zone after decontamination. This guide supplies no bevel angle, motion, pressure, or sharpening schedule.

Lift and collect only what the chemistry has released

Divide the furniture into sections that can be monitored, collected, and closed before the remover leaves its approved working state. Apply and inspect only by the selected product. Open a small part of the section first. If the coating does not release as the test established, stop; do not replace missing chemistry with force.

When ready, present the approved tool exactly as proved in the test and move the loosened mass toward the receiving vessel without levering on an edge, crossing veneer seams, driving into grain, or dragging contaminated slurry over a cleaned area. This is deliberately qualitative: the object, tool, remover instructions, and test patch—not a universal blade angle or stroke—define the actuation.

Wipe each loaded tool at the vessel before it returns to the object. Keep the bulk material together; do not spread it into a larger rag-contaminated area. Change tools when width, contour, or substrate changes. A plastic or shaped nonmetal tool leads on carvings, soft wood, veneer, inlay, plating, and scratch-critical surfaces unless a conservator-approved test says otherwise.

Repeat only under the exact product

The first cycle may reveal another finish, stain, filler, glaze, or earlier paint. Stop and re-diagnose it. Reapply only when the same remover’s instructions permit another cycle on the newly exposed layer and the completed test supports it. Never combine removers, add heat, seal with household film, or extend dwell because the first pass was incomplete.

The 07210 may enter only after wet stripping and prescribed cleanup are complete, the remaining material is identified as a bounded hard residue, the furniture surface is robust, and the exact follow-up method authorizes a heavy steel chisel. If any of those facts is missing, 07210 remains a graph lead with no executable role.

Close the chemistry and qualify the surface

Use only the prescribed closure

Some removers require water, some an after-wash or named solvent, some a neutralizer and measured endpoint, and some another sequence. This guide chooses none. Use the exact material, order, repetitions, collection method, and endpoint from the bound product. Do not add vinegar, mineral spirits, water, heat, pH paper, or a household cleaner unless that system requires it. Hardware and mixed materials may require separate closure routes.

Capture all wash liquid. Keep carbon tools out of prolonged wet contact and clean them only by the product-authorized route; dry and store them according to their tool guide after decontamination. Never leave a scraper soaking in remover.

Acceptance and refinishing handoff

Accept the stripped section only when all six statements are proved:

the treatment stopped at the documented finish layer and preserved every layer meant to remain;

the remover’s cleanup or neutralization endpoint is met;

the substrate is dry under the remover and next-finish requirements;

veneer, glue lines, joints, inlay, carvings, and hardware remain stable;

no smear, gloss, tack, transferred color, contaminated pore, or other system-defined residue remains;

the intended next coating’s surface-preparation test passes.

Sanding, staining, filling, sealing, priming, and recoating are new operations.

What goes wrong—and the recovery

The finish will not lift. Stop. Recheck product identity, coating approval, film build, conditions, and inspection state. Do not increase scraper force or deploy 07210.

The slurry smears instead of collecting. Shorten the section, clean the loaded tool into the vessel, and return to the product’s readiness instructions. Do not spread it with more wipes.

Wood darkens, blanches, fuzzes, or loses stain. Stop the object. Complete only the manufacturer’s safe-removal and first-aid-for-the-substrate direction, preserve the test evidence, and consult the remover maker or conservator.

Veneer bubbles or a joint opens. Stop, support without clamping damage, prevent further liquid entry, and obtain conservation or repair advice. More drying time is not an authorized cure.

Hardware discolors or masking softens. Stop before exposing more.

The scraper marks the surface. Stop steel use. The finish may not be ready, the blade may be damaged, or the substrate may require plastic or a conservator-selected tool. Do not polish or sand away the evidence before diagnosis.

A worker has an exposure symptom. Stop, leave the exposure zone without spreading contamination, follow SDS first aid, and use emergency services or the product emergency contact as directed. Correct the failed control before re-entry.

The dry test will not accept the next finish. Do not coat the piece. Return to the exact remover cleanup endpoint and next-finish contamination guidance.

Cleanup and hazardous-waste gate

At every pause, close the original remover, receiving vessel, and compatible waste containers. Reconcile sludge, liquid, wipes, liners, PPE, spill material, and tool-cleaning residue. Keep the remover label and waste description with the container. Never mix different remover wastes, drying-oil rags, ordinary trash, or unknown residues. A rag carrying stripper follows the stripper/coating waste determination; it does not become safe through an improvised “oily-rag” routine.

Household users should obtain the local household-hazardous-waste program’s acceptance and packaging instructions before transport. Commercial shops must determine the actual mixture; EPA identifies paint-stripping sludge and cleaning waste as potentially hazardous. Lead status remains attached.

Which Hyde scraper should I buy for a furniture stripping bench?

For a verified traditional solvent-shop system, 07160 is the general-width hardwood carbon lead and 07060 the narrower companion. For a verified water-closure system on robust flats, 01140 and 01440 are the stainless leads by field width. That is selection logic, not chemistry approval; the chosen remover and test must admit the tool.

Is 07210 the best choice because it is extra heavy duty?

It is the bounded escalation for hard residue after the wet chemical cycle and cleanup, not the default sludge scraper. On ordinary released finish its extra spine increases consequence without solving a chemistry problem.

Can I use steel on veneer?

Not by default. Veneer adds both a thin face and a hidden glue line. If stripping is acceptable at all, the remover and conservator or manufacturer must approve the veneer system, and a compatible nonmetal tool normally leads.

How long should the remover dwell, and how hard should I scrape?

Only the exact label/TDS and the completed test answer. This guide intentionally supplies neither a dwell nor an angle, stroke, or pressure.

Should I remove the hardware?

Remove it only without damage and after documenting its position. Hardware is its own finish system; do not strip it with furniture chemistry by association.

Do I neutralize before refinishing?

Only if the selected remover requires neutralization, and only with its named material and endpoint. “Neutralize every stripper” and “use vinegar” are not valid rules.

When is the furniture ready for a new finish?

When the remover’s closure and drying conditions are met, the object passes the six acceptance statements, and the exact new finish accepts a completed test area. There is no transferable refinishing schedule.

History footnote

The old furniture-stripping shop separated coating from object without grinding away carving; wet collection could preserve profiles that dry abrasion erased. Its darker history is occupational: NIOSH investigated furniture-stripping deaths and high solvent exposures, then designed exhaust around specific tanks and rinse stations. Modern regulation removed methylene-chloride consumer paint removers and prohibited most later commercial uses. The enduring craft lesson is that a hand scraper is only the collection end of a controlled chemical system.

Conservation also changed the definition of success. Original finish, wear, and patina are evidence, not merely obstacles to a new coating. A surface can look old and remain the object’s most valuable material. The competent refinisher begins with the refusal test: *should this finish come off at all?*

Canonical graph, sources, and open claims

Disposition: all five registered leads are linked and conditional. No unregistered Hyde model is promoted. Plastic scrapers, shaped nonmetal tools, remover, containment, exhaust, PPE, emergency equipment, waste containers, testing, and refinishing products are required external systems rather than invented catalog edges.
