Repaint adhesion, localized defect correction, and between-coat leveling have different endpoints and different grit limits.
Job: turn a clean, dry, sound painted surface into the condition required by the next compatible coating: dull and uniformly scuffed for repaint, locally leveled where a defect stands proud, or lightly de-nibbed between coats when the coating maker requires it.
Time: the sanding itself may be a short trim task or a room-scale operation. Cleaning, repairs, dust settling, inspection, spot priming, and the coating maker’s dry/recoat window often control the schedule. There is no honest universal minutes-per-wall, “overnight,” or between-coat wait.
Difficulty: stopping at the right endpoint. The goal is not to erase the old coating or make the wall feel like bare glass. It is to remove gloss and isolated high defects while preserving a sound film. On a fresh coat, the hardest decision is whether to sand at all: the label/TDS may require abrasion, allow it only after a stated interval, or direct recoating inside a chemical-bond window with no sanding.

These are selection lanes, not a universal grit law. Coating hardness, age, sheen, resin, surface texture, abrasive construction, and hand or machine pressure all change the scratch. Begin with the least aggressive option that achieves the endpoint in a test patch. The current coating label/TDS and the next coating’s preparation instructions outrank a generic grit table.
Before sanding: decide whether the old film deserves to stay
Identify the substrate, coating system, and next product
Write down what you know: drywall, plaster, wood, metal, or composite; approximate coating age; existing sheen; proposed primer and topcoat; and whether this is old-film repainting or a fresh intercoat step. Read the current label/TDS/SDS for the next product before choosing an abrasive. The topcoat maker owns required cleanliness, deglossing, compatible primers, application conditions, recoat windows, and any grit it specifies.
Do not assume “latex over latex,” “oil over oil,” or “paint sticks to primer” settles compatibility. Kitchen grease, aerosol polish, furniture wax, silicone caulk residue, nicotine, soap film, hand oil, and an unknown old finish can defeat adhesion even after the sheen looks dull. Make a complete-system test in an inconspicuous area when the old film or cleaner history is uncertain.
Clean before you scratch
Remove loose dirt and vacuum first, then use the cleaner and rinse procedure permitted by the proposed coating system. Let the surface dry completely. Sanding a greasy wall does not clean it; it drives contamination into a larger field of microscopic scratches and contaminates the abrasive. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams both reduce the preparation endpoint to the same useful sequence: the surface must be clean, dry, sound, and dull, with dust removed before coating.
Remove hardware where practical. Protect floors, fixed finishes, vents, smoke detectors, receptacles, furnishings, and adjacent rooms from dust without creating an electrical or fire hazard. Good raking light is a tool: a lamp held nearly parallel to the surface makes gloss islands, nibs, ridges, and edge breakthrough visible before paint magnifies them.
Perform the stay-or-remove test
Scuff sanding is justified only when the retained film is sound.
Sound old film: firmly attached, hard rather than gummy, not actively chalking, and free of moisture damage. Clean it, repair isolated defects, scuff it to the next product’s requirement, and spot-prime exposed substrate or repairs as directed.
Peeling or blistering: sanding the loose edge smooth does not correct water entry, vapor pressure, poor original preparation, incompatible coats, or a failed substrate. Follow the failed-paint scraping/removal lane and correct the cause.
Powdery or chalking: if a clean hand still picks up powder after the specified wash, the next coat would bond to loose material. Use the coating maker’s chalk-remediation and primer path.
Soft, wrinkled, crazed, or solvent-reactive film: do not bury it. Obtain a compatibility diagnosis and removal or isolation-primer specification.
Mildew or biological growth: treat the moisture and cleaning problem through the coating maker’s procedure; sanding can spread contaminated dust.
Widespread rust or corroded metal: this is corrosion preparation, not merely deglossing.
The distinction protects both buyers and doers. A better abrasive cannot turn a failed coating into a sound substrate.
Stop for the lead-paint boundary before making dust
Assume paint in a pre-1978 U.S. home or child-occupied facility can contain lead unless qualified testing or documentation establishes otherwise. For paid renovation work, EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting rule generally requires a lead-safe certified firm and certified renovator when covered painted surfaces are disturbed. EPA’s minor-repair thresholds—no more than 6 square feet of painted surface per interior room or 20 square feet outdoors—are not a blanket sanding permission: prohibited practices remain prohibited, and the exception does not apply when lead-based paint is known, certain high-risk occupants are present, or the work is demolition.
Homeowners working in their own homes may not be subject to the same firm-certification rule, but lead dust still harms people. EPA recommends isolating the work, keeping children, pregnant people, and pets away, using wet methods or shrouded HEPA-extracted tools where appropriate, and HEPA-vacuuming plus wet wiping during cleanup. Do not dry power-sand suspect paint in open occupancy. State, tribal, and local rules may be stricter.
Choose the abrasive by job stage, not by whatever is already on the truck
Broad repaint: net disc or conventional aluminum oxide
The 9" family is the broad-field lane, but its members are not interchangeable.
09921, 180 grit, 9" net, 10-pack is the preferred broad adhesion-scuff member for sound old paint. The official product record supports the net construction, open-mesh anti-loading behavior, hook-and-loop attachment, washable/reusable design, and 180 grit.
09920, 150 grit, 9" net, 10-pack belongs one step coarser: old paint with light texture or minor roughness that must be reduced while the sheen is broken.
09919, 120 grit, 9" net, 10-pack is a defect tool, not the default wall-scuff disc. Confine it to a run, hard ridge, proud repair, or similar high spot and refine the scratch afterward. A whole-wall 120-grit pass creates avoidable scratch risk and edge breakthrough.
09875, 180 grit, 9" aluminum oxide, 25-pack is the conventional-disc counterpart for fine adhesion scuff where the operator does not need the net family. It is a high-volume disposable pack and may load sooner on paint.
09873, 150 grit, 9" aluminum oxide, 25-pack is the conventional option for slight leveling plus scuff. Like 09875, it has Hyde’s official aluminum-oxide and grit support; do not silently describe the black disc as silicon carbide.
The 9" net discs are officially described for 9" round dust-free sanders. It is therefore a hand/pole support, not proof of an extracted system. Verify the actual holder, dust path, and attachment before purchase; do not infer that any 9" hook-and-loop head is dust-free merely because the abrasive is net.
Profiles, trim, and local hand work
45350 four-sided fine/medium foam block wraps gentle contours and puts different working faces around a compact block. Hyde supports heavy-duty aluminum-oxide abrasive, wet/dry use, and four-sided construction. It is particularly useful on molding, rails, stiles, returns, and narrow faces where a 9" disc would bridge the shape.
09083 two-sided sanding sponge has an official 150-grit/medium rating, washable construction, and an 8-7/8" × 4" × 3/4" format. It is useful for broad hand scuff, repair perimeters, and simple trim. Because 150 grit can cut fresh edge paint quickly, it is not the default precision intercoat choice for fine trim.
45390 three-layer drywall sanding sponge combines an abrasive face, absorbent wipe face, and internal spine in a 9" × 4-1/2" × 1-7/8" wet/dry tool. It can be useful for controlled damp scuff and a built-in wipe in occupied interiors.
45395 quarter-sheet rubber sanding block securely holds one quarter of a standard 9" × 11" abrasive sheet. It supplies a flatter hand face and crisp edge control while letting the operator choose paper to the coating maker’s grit. The registered Hyde abrasive families here do not supply that 9" × 11" paper, so paper is a separate purchase.
45385, 180 grit, 5" disc and 45384, 150 grit, 5" disc are the small-format profile lane with the 45380 foam hand sander. Use 45385 for fine adhesion scuff and 45384 when slight roughness also needs reduction. Inspect the actual parts before committing a crew quantity.
On molding, do not press a hard edge across multiple planes. Work one face at a time, let a foam tool conform without crushing it, and make fewer passes over corners and proud beads. Rounding an arris is removal, not preparation.
Between coats: 240 grit only after the coating says “sand”
09922, 240 grit, 9" net, 10-pack is the strongest documented broad intercoat member. Hyde directly supports 240 grit, open mesh, hook-and-loop, washable/reusable construction, and the use case of Level-5 polishing and between-coat finish sanding.
09940, 240 grit, 3-5/16" × 11-1/4" net sheets, 10-pack is the hand/pole sheet lane. Hyde directly calls it a 240-grit net sheet for dust-free hand/pole sanders and says it “Meets OSHA and California silicate requirements.” Preserve that exact wording; it does not prove that any sanding operation is OSHA-compliant or that the sheet controls lead, wood, paint, or silica exposure by itself.
Do not copy 09922’s washable, reusable, hook-and-loop, or anti-loading claims onto 09928 as if its page had proved them. Treat it as a candidate pending current Hyde confirmation.
Two cautions keep this lane honest. First, 240 grit is a finishing/leveling choice in this set; it is too fine to be the default adhesion scuff on an unknown old glossy repaint. Second, a fresh coat may need no abrasion inside its maker’s recoat window. Sanding by habit can weaken a chemical intercoat bond, add dust, or cut through edges.
The procedure
Establish containment, extraction, and personal protection
Remove or cover what cannot be cleaned. Close and seal pathways that would distribute dust while maintaining any ventilation required by the product and the building. Keep occupants outside the controlled area. Isolate HVAC returns if the system and local procedure permit; do not create an unsafe combustion-appliance condition.
Use engineering controls first. A compatible shroud or dust-free hand/pole system connected to a suitable HEPA vacuum captures dust closer to generation than room cleanup can. NIOSH testing of vacuum sanding systems during lead-paint removal found exposure reductions of 80–97 percent, with four of five systems near 95 percent. That is strong evidence for source capture, not permission to omit containment, cleanup, or respiratory protection.
Wear eye protection against airborne grit and falling dust. Use hearing protection for powered equipment when exposure warrants it. Select gloves and protective clothing for the coating/dust hazard and cleanup chemicals. Respirator type must be based on the hazard assessment, SDS, applicable regulation, and fit; in a workplace, use it within a compliant respiratory-protection program. A generic dust mask, a respirator cartridge chosen by odor, or the letters “HEPA” on a vacuum do not solve an unidentified hazard.
Make and inspect a test patch
Choose a low-visibility area that includes the representative sheen and texture. With the least aggressive candidate:
Mark the patch boundary lightly so you can compare it to untouched paint.
Sand with light, even pressure and a few overlapping passes.
Vacuum and wipe by the coating maker’s permitted method.
Inspect in raking and normal light.
If compatibility is uncertain, apply the complete proposed primer/topcoat system to a separate prepared test patch and let it reach the maker’s evaluation point.
The winning patch is uniformly dull and clean without deep visible scratches, swirls, exposed substrate, softened film, or residue. If the gloss survives, improve technique or move one controlled step coarser. If scratches telegraph, move finer or reduce pressure. If paint balls up or smears, stop: the film is soft, heated by friction, chemically sensitive, or not ready to sand.
Level isolated defects before scuffing the field
Circle runs, drips, raised patch edges, embedded lint, hard dirt specks, and ridges in pencil or low-tack marker outside the repair. Use the smallest tool and smallest area that can flatten each defect. A rigid quarter-sheet block or the center of a supported disc levels a proud spot; a floppy abrasive pushed with fingertips follows the bump and cuts a moat around it.
For a genuinely hard high spot, begin locally with 09919 at 120 grit or the 150-grit lane, then feather and refine with 150/180 as the coating system requires. Keep the tool flat. Check every few strokes. The moment the defect is level, stop the coarse pass.
If the high area is actually a soft run in a fresh coating, do not sand it early. Let it reach the maker’s correction condition. If the “ridge” is a loose repair boundary, cracked joint, popped fastener, or peeling film, return to repair rather than polishing the symptom.
Scuff broad, sound old paint
Fit the correct abrasive to a verified compatible holder. Seat hook-and-loop material fully; clamp sheets as the holder instructs. Connect extraction before entering the field. Start at an edge only after testing how aggressively the tool cuts there.
On walls and ceilings, divide the field into manageable bands. Use light pressure, keep the whole support face in contact, and make overlapping passes in a repeatable pattern—vertical then horizontal, or another pattern that shows where you have been. The tool should abrade; body weight should not be required. Excess pressure creates heat, loading, dish-shaped low areas, and abrupt cut-through at seams.
Keep a hand tool for corners, wall-to-ceiling lines, narrow returns, around hardware, and the last inch beside adjacent finishes. A large disc bridges hollows and can leave glossy valleys; change angle or hand-scuff those areas rather than leaning harder. Replace, wash, or clean an abrasive only as its product instructions permit. A loaded disc burnishes paint and deposits debris instead of cutting a predictable scratch.
Inspect after vacuuming. “Uniformly dull” means no glossy islands when raking light moves across the surface. It does not mean every old roller stipple is erased. If the next coat would reproduce an objectionable texture, that is a leveling decision and may require a different repair/build strategy.
Scuff trim and profiles without changing the millwork
Remove knobs, hinges, pulls, strike plates, and switch plates where practical. Clean hand-contact areas especially well. Begin with the 45350 fine face, 45385 180-grit disc on its foam holder, or appropriate paper in 45395. Reserve the 150-grit tools for harder old film or slight texture that the test patch proves needs them.
Work long grain-direction or molding-direction strokes on straight elements. Pinch a flexible block around a broad curve without forcing it into a sharp cove. Fold or select paper to reach a groove, but never create a knife-like abrasive edge that incises the corner. On rails and stiles, finish one plane before the next. Reduce pressure at every edge; edge film is thin and cuts through first.
Vacuum grooves and corners from more than one direction. A profile can look clean while holding a white dust line at the bottom of a bead. That line becomes a bond breaker under the next coat.
Between coats: verify readiness, de-nib, and stop
Read the exact recoat and intercoat-abrasion instruction again. Record when the coat was applied and the actual temperature/humidity conditions if the system makes them relevant. “Dry to touch” is not “ready to sand,” and “ready to recoat” is not automatically “ready to sand.” Cooler or more humid conditions and heavier film can extend the product’s clock.
If abrasion is required or permitted:
Test a hidden area with 09922/09940 at 240 grit or the proven fine face of 45350.
Use nearly the tool’s own weight. The objective is to clip dust nibs and make an even key, not flatten the full film build.
Stay off corners, edges, raised panels, and molding peaks until the broad faces establish how quickly the film cuts.
Stop immediately if the coating gums, rolls into rubbery strings, smears, pills, heats, or changes color at an edge.
Vacuum the surface and room, allow airborne dust to settle, then use only the final wipe the finish maker permits.
Inspect before recoating. Spot-prime or repair a breakthrough only through the coating system’s directions; do not simply bury bare substrate under the next finish coat.
If the maker directs a no-sand recoat inside a specified interval, follow it. If that interval has expired, use the maker’s late-recoat preparation—not an invented 240-grit shortcut.
Remove dust without recontaminating the scratch
Vacuum the surface, profiles, tops of doors and trim, ledges, floor protection, tools, and nearby horizontal surfaces. Let airborne dust settle and vacuum again as the containment procedure requires. Then use the coating maker’s approved final wipe.
There is no universal “tack cloth” step. Resinous tack cloth can contaminate some waterborne coatings; a wet rag can leave moisture, raise fibers, or spread dirty slurry; solvent can soften an old film or violate the new system. A clean microfiber, damp wipe, solvent wipe, or no-wipe-after-vacuum instruction must come from the actual coating system.
Use raking light and a clean hand or clean contrasting wipe to inspect—not to substitute for specified cleanliness testing. The surface should be dull, dry, sound, and free of loose grit. Prime bare areas, stains, repairs, and incompatible substrates only with the specified primer. Then protect the prepared surface from new hand oil, construction dust, and excessive delay until coating.
What goes wrong—and what the evidence means
The wall is shiny in islands after sanding. The tool bridged low texture, the pass pattern skipped areas, or a loaded abrasive burnished instead of cutting. Vacuum, change or service the abrasive as permitted, and hand-scuff the valleys. Do not solve it with more pressure everywhere.
Deep scratches show through the test coat. The abrasive was too coarse, contaminated with a hard particle, or driven with excessive pressure. Let the test coat reach its maker’s repair condition, refine the surface, and move finer. 120 grit belongs on a proud defect, not the finish field.
Paint balls up, smears, or rolls into strings. The film is not sandable, friction is heating it, or its chemistry is sensitive. Stop and consult the coating’s dry/recoat guidance. New abrasive will not make a soft coat ready.
Edges turn a different color. You have cut through. Stop on that element; feather only as the repair system directs and spot-prime exposed substrate. Reduce pressure and passes at every remaining edge.
The disc stops cutting and leaves glossy tracks. Paint has loaded the abrasive or the attachment is slipping. Service only if the product is documented washable/reusable; otherwise replace it. Check holder compatibility and extraction.
Swirls appear under the new paint. The disc was tilted, debris was trapped, the grit was too coarse, or the operator remained stationary. Keep the support flat and moving; clean both surface and abrasive. Refine before topcoating.
The new coat peels despite a visibly scratched surface. Scratches are not proof of adhesion. Grease, wax, silicone, chalk, dust, an incompatible old coating, moisture, or missed primer can all remain. Diagnose the bond boundary before repeating the coat.
Dust escapes the room. Containment, capture airflow, vacuum filtration, work sequence, or cleanup is inadequate. Stop generating dust, correct the control system, and clean the migration path. A net abrasive reduces loading; it is not containment.
Fresh intercoat sanding exposes primer or wood at molding peaks. The coating was thin at edges and the tool was too aggressive or the coat too soft. Stop, follow the maker’s repair/prime path, and hand-de-nib high points with less pressure next time.
A damp sponge leaves slurry in corners. Too much liquid or no controlled collection path was used. Do not paint over dried slurry. Remove it by the specified cleanup method and let the surface reach the coating’s dry requirement.
A supposedly dust-free head throws dust. Net abrasive, holder holes, shroud, hose, vacuum airflow, and filter condition are a system. Verify every interface.
Why this ordinary job has an extraordinary history
Scuffing old paint and rubbing between coats were already separate, named operations before electric sanders. A 1916 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics bulletin reproducing the British Departmental Committee’s investigation into lead paint distinguishes the dry “rubbing down” of an old painted surface before new coats from smoothing a newly painted surface before a second coat. The committee considered rubbing down important to good work while also identifying its lead-bearing dust as dangerous. The modern decision in this guide—retain a sound film, abrade only to the needed endpoint, and capture the dust at source—descends directly from that century-old conflict between finish quality and worker exposure ([BLS Bulletin No. 188, full text at FRASER](
The hand tool changed as polymer foam made abrasives conformable. U.S. It is not proof of the first sanding sponge, but it documents the material idea behind a resilient block carrying abrasive around a form—an important step from folded paper toward tools such as 09083 and 45350 (US3857133A).
The dust path changed again with open-mesh abrasives. Mirka’s current company history dates the introduction of Abranet to 2001 and describes it as the beginning of its dust-free sanding development. Hyde’s present net discs and sheets belong to that broader industry transition: the abrasive is no longer only a cutting skin but part of an airflow system. The qualification matters. Open mesh can help dust reach extraction; it cannot make an unmatched holder, weak vacuum, missing containment, or unsafe lead practice “dust-free” (Mirka history).

09928 performance/lifecycle: current packet acceptance proves Hyde Store identity and GTIN, not the 09922-style performance bundle. Confirm grit, mesh, pack, attachment, washability/reuse, and active lifecycle with Hyde before scaling.
9" holder/extraction fit: 09977 accepts 9" round hook-and-loop abrasive, but its accepted claims do not prove a vacuum port. Confirm a complete extracted holder/shroud/hose/vacuum system for 09919–09922/09928 rather than inferring one from disc diameter.

Buyer handoff
Buy to the diagnosed stage, area, holder, and dust-control plan:
Sound broad repaint: 09921/09875 at 180 grit; use 09920/09873 at 150 only when minor roughness also needs correction.
Localized hard defect: a small quantity of 09919 for knockdown, plus a finer abrasive for refinement.
Trim/profile repaint: 45350 or 45395 with separately specified paper; 45385 + 45380 for a conformable 180-grit 5" system; 09083 or 45384 when the test proves 150 grit is appropriate.
Label-required intercoat abrasion: 09922 or 09940 at 240 grit; do not scale 09928 until the open claims are confirmed.
Occupied or dust-sensitive work: choose the complete holder, extraction, HEPA, containment, PPE, and cleanup system at the same time as the abrasive. Net material alone is not dust control.
Do not buy by grit alone. Confirm package quantity, holder interface, actual work area, edge/detail coverage, replacement rate, and whether wet use is permitted for both the abrasive and the coating. Do not substitute 120, 150, 180, and 240 as if finer always means safer; a too-fine repaint scuff can fail to dull a hard glossy film, while a too-coarse intercoat pass can cut through a fresh finish.
Doer handoff
The field sequence is:
identify → clean → diagnose soundness and lead boundary → contain/extract → test the least aggressive abrasive → level defects locally → scuff uniformly → vacuum and approved final wipe → inspect in raking light → spot-prime as specified → recoat on the manufacturer’s clock.
The acceptance endpoint is observable: sound film retained, sheen uniformly broken where adhesion scuff is required, high defects level, profiles not reshaped, no loose dust or contamination, no unaddressed breakthrough, and every fresh-coat abrasion performed only at the coating maker’s sandable condition.
This guide ends at a verified prepared surface; it does not invent the next coating’s application or cure schedule.
