Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Not a field brush — a wall or ceiling is rolled; the 80813 cuts the edges the roller can't.
  • Not the muntin brush: for divided lights, narrow reveals, and members under a couple of inches, the overshoot of 2-1/2″ costs you extra lines, and the 1-1/2″ 80811 is the right size.
  • Not an oil/varnish finishing brush — poly-nylon carries waterborne coatings and only tolerates oil; glass-flat enamel and varnish want natural white bristle (Hyde Extra™ 47380-series).
  • Not a reach tool — behind radiators, up a stairwell, on a pole, the fixed handle can't get there; the goose-neck 80832/80833 are the family's reach brushes.
  • Not a prep or scrub brush; that's the wire and stripping side of this catalog.

How the pros run it

01

Load one-third, tap don't scrape

protect the reservoir and the heel. Set a bead, then draw it — first pass off the line, second on the line with the toe. One long pull per line — arm and shoulder, not wrist, so the straight run stays straight. Toe leads; flip the brush end-for-end to change direction rather than fighting the slant. Reload before it drags — a starved 2-1/2″ chatters and fuzzes the line; more paint, not more pressure. All-day means care every day: this is the brush you use most, so wash it to the heel each session and comb the filaments straight — a $20 brush maintained this way outlasts a decade, and dried latex in the heel splays it in a week (line-wide care rule).

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Why is the 2-1/2″ the one everyone reaches for?
Balance — enough belly to run long cut lines with few reloads, a toe fine enough to hold a crisp line, and light enough to control all day (§1, §2a).
80813 or 80803?
Same head; soft-grip here, wood handle there. Since this is the all-day width, the cushion is the reason to pick the 80813 (§5).
When do I size down to the 1-1/2″?
For muntins, narrow reveals, and trim members under a couple of inches, where the 2-1/2″ overshoots (§4, §5).
Latex or oil?
Waterborne is its home; the poly-nylon backbone holds up wet. It tolerates oil but isn't the varnish brush (§4).
How do I cut a straight ceiling line without tape?
Set a bead off the line, then ride the toe on the line in one long arm-driven pull, reloading before it drags (§2a, §3).
What makes it last?
Wash to the heel every session and comb it straight — the most-used brush needs the most care (§3).
