Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not the oil-and-varnish finishing brush.
  • A poly-nylon blend carries and releases waterborne coatings beautifully and tolerates oil, but it will not lay enamel or spar varnish to the mirror finish that soft natural white bristle produces — that is the Hyde Extra™ 47380-series' job, and putting this brush in varnish wastes the varnish.
  • Not a fine-line brush: at 3″ it rides a broad line, and a crisp hairline two-color cut belongs to a 2-1/2″ or a 2″ sash (80803, 80841, 80822, 80962).
  • Not a big-field tool: a wall or a ceiling is a roller's work; the brush cuts the edges the roller can't reach.
  • Not a scrub or prep brush — it is an applicator; cleaning welds, rust, or grout is the wire and stripping brushes' half of this catalog (46800-series), and dragging a good sash brush across grit destroys the tip that makes it worth owning.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Load one-third, tap don't scrape

The reservoir lives in the belly; the heel must stay clean or the brush is ruined from the inside out. Set a bead, then draw it. First pass off the line to release paint, second pass on the line with the toe. Pull, don't scrub. A cut line is one smooth continuous draw; move from the arm and shoulder for a long straight run, not the wrist. Toe leads. Whichever way the slant points, that long corner is the drawing edge — flip the brush end-for-end rather than fighting the angle when you change direction. Reload before it drags. A starved brush chatters and leaves a fuzzy, feathered line; the fix is more paint in the brush, not more pressure on it. Keep it wet, comb the heel. Poly-nylon rewards care: wash it out to the heel the day you use it, comb the filaments straight, and this brush lasts years; let latex dry in the heel once and it splays permanently (line-wide care rule).

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why buy the 3″ instead of the 2-1/2″ everyone calls the standard?
Coverage. The 3″ fills a wider band per pass and holds more paint for long runs and thirsty exterior boards; the trade-off is a slightly fatter freehand line (§2a, §5).
What's the difference between this and the 80814?
Only the handle — wood here, cushioned soft-grip there, identical heads (§5). Buy on grip comfort.
Latex or oil?
Built for waterborne paint; the poly-nylon backbone holds up wet. It tolerates oil but won't lay varnish glass-flat — use natural white bristle for that (§4).
Can I cut a straight ceiling line freehand with a brush this wide?
Yes, with the set-a-bead-then-draw method (§3), but the wide belly wanders more than a narrow sash; for a scrutinized two-color line, size down.
Will it fit an extension pole?
No — this is a fixed wood-handle brush. The goose-neck siblings (80832/80833) are the pole-and-reach cut-in brushes in this family.
How do I make it last?
Wash to the heel the same day, comb it straight, store it hanging or flat in its keeper (§3).
