Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Heavy descaling and mild-steel rust removal.
  • The fine .15mm fill is for finesse, not brute cutting; for heavy scale, thick rust, or open paint fields on mild steel, the carbon stripping brushes (46802 narrow, 46805 wide-with-scraper) cut faster and cost less — and iron contamination is a non-issue on steel headed for paint.
  • Using this brush there is paying for corrosion resistance you don't need and getting a slower cut.
  • Delicate or reactive surfaces where even fine steel is too much. Anodizing, soft platings, and reactive chemistries want the brass 46801 (softer) or the nylon 46804 (zero metal) — stainless wire still cuts.
  • A scraper's job. This brush has no scraper nose; for crusted spots that need shearing, the scraper-equipped carbon brushes or the nylon 46804 (plastic scraper) do that part.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Cut with the tips, let the fineness work

The .15mm wire's advantage is that it bends into a profile — so guide it along carving and moulding and let the tip ends do the lifting, rather than mashing the block flat. Keep the job wet on chemistry. This is a stripper-and-scrub tool; the chemical softens the coating and the brush lifts it — dry-forcing just abrades. Use the shoe. The raised handle keeps your knuckles clear when you bear into a recess. Dedicate it — the load-bearing rule. The instant this "stainless" brush is used on ordinary mild steel, it can pick up free iron and will thereafter contaminate stainless exactly as a carbon brush would; mark it and reserve it for stainless, aluminum, and wet chemical work. Eye protection — even fine wire sheds and throws debris. Rinse and store — the no-rust fill is what lets you leave it damp.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why stainless instead of the cheaper carbon brush?
Two reasons: it survives wet chemical work without rusting, and it cleans stainless and aluminum without leaving iron that later rusts. On plain mild steel headed for paint, the carbon 46802 is the better buy.
Will it strip heavy rust and scale?
Not its strength — the .15mm wire is fine and for detail; heavy descaling on steel is a carbon-brush job.
What size is the brush face?
Catalog says 1-1/8" x 2-1/4"; a conflicting "3/4 x 4-3/4" string appears to be crossed copy from the carbon 46802 — confirm on the tool.
What grade of stainless?
Unpublished — don't claim 304 or 316.
Can I use it on my mild-steel project?
You can, but then it's contaminated for stainless use forever — keep it dedicated if stainless cleanliness matters.
