Choose Capture Geometry: V-Cut vs Hook

The decision begins with one sentence:
A V-cut closes around material that stands proud of a surface; a hook closes around sheet, strand, or band that passes into a throat.
Both shapes capture. They protect different neighbors.

Name the cut before naming a knife
Draw a cross-section through the work.
material to keep;
material to remove;
surface or layer that must not be scored;
direction of pull;
thickness/width of material at the cutting interface;
any tension or stored energy.
If the waste is a fin standing off a molded face, it belongs in the V-cut trial lane. If it is sheet or strand that must be severed while the backing survives, it belongs in the hook lane.
If it is a sprue, thick gate, wire, metal banding, reinforced web, enclosed interior cut, or rigid section too large to enter the selected throat, neither lane is proven.
Understand V-cut protection
A V-notch straddles a protrusion. Its supporting flanks travel near the parent surface while converging edges close on the material standing above it.
That geometry is valuable for:
narrow proud flash;
repeated molded protrusions;
controlled flush finishing.
It is not a general V-shaped knife for slitting sheet. Feeding sheet into the notch can force both edges against a broad section, hide the protected backing, and run out of throat.
This guide intentionally names no V-cut model. The registered exact graph contains only hook tools; consult the owning V-trim line/job when the cross-section points to a protrusion.
Understand hook protection
A hook curves beyond a straight point so the material enters an interior cutting throat. On an appropriate pull, the blade’s back can ride the surface that must survive while the interior bevel severs what has entered.
This geometry earns its place when:
a straight press cut would score the layer below;
cord or band rolls away from an open edge;
the cut must finish through the last fibers;
an opened wrap is pulled away from an isolated roll face;
flooring/sheet work calls for a durable fixed hook.
The hook does not become guarded merely because its point is curved. The interior edge is exposed to whatever enters the throat, and the follow-through follows the pull.
Verify an entry condition
A hook needs an edge, gap, or controlled starter opening.
Can the throat enter without stabbing the keep-side?
Is the opening large enough for the physical pattern?
Can the back sit against the protected surface?
Will adhesive, grit, pile, or reinforcement block the throat?
Can the cut be pulled through without turning toward the body?
Will the material release suddenly?
Do not pierce blindly with a hook point. If a starter slit is required, establish it with an approved tool and keep it away from concealed services or layers.
Prove the physical part on representative stock.
Read the fixed 67090 honestly
The 67090 is the Hook Knife BG39A. Accepted evidence establishes a 3-3/8-inch blade length, .083-inch thickness, and sharp V-ground hook.
It is a complete handled knife rather than a replaceable mill blade. This makes it the natural trial when:
one worker owns and maintains the tool;
the cut is mobile or jobsite-like;
a durable fixed pattern is controlled;
the handle/edge relationship should not change between tasks.
Its accepted facts do not establish every sheet material, hook opening, cut depth, sharpening angle, force, or backing compatibility. Select it by witnessed cut and its product/line boundaries, not by assuming a thick .083-inch blade can swallow thick work.
Read the station-hook trio
The mill-blade members are unhandled and require a separately verified handle system.
67240 BG448A: 6-3/8 × 5/8 × .065 inches; accepted exact name Hook Mill Blade.
67390 6520: double-end hook; 4 × 3/8 × .035 inches.
67450 4502M: double-end hook; 4 × 3/8 × .035 inches; the printed catalog marks this model High-Speed Steel.
The facts extraction attaches a High-Speed Steel family claim to 67390, but the owning line document’s direct catalog-page adjudication finds that wording printed only in the 67450 entry.
These blades belong where a station buys handles once, controls projection, flips or replaces edges through procedure, and replenishes by pattern.
Choose fixed knife or mounted blade
Choose the fixed 67090 lane when:
the work moves with a craftsperson;
one tool stays complete;
sharpening/sheathing ownership is established;
the fixed pattern already matches the material and cut.
Choose the mounted mill-blade lane when:
one station repeats the cut;
consumable replenishment and change logs exist;
projection/retention are controlled;
different blade weights or steel positions must be stocked.
Do not improvise a handle for 67240/67390/67450. Width is an important handle key, but throat passage, seating, unused-end containment, projection, and retention still require physical verification.
Choose light double-end or heavier BG448A
The two double-end blades are 4 × 3/8 × .035 inches. The BG448A is 6-3/8 × 5/8 × .065 inches.
That establishes two physical classes:
shorter, narrower, lighter-gauge double-end station blades;
longer, wider, heavier-gauge BG448A.
It does not establish capacities. Use the physical trial to assess:
ability to follow the line;
blade stability at minimum projection;
stock entering the throat;
A heavier blade is not automatically safer or more durable. It may be less able to follow tight work and requires a different handle-width system.
Choose 6520 versus 4502M without inventing shape
Their pattern codes differ. The owning line adjudicates a documented steel difference: 67450 is printed High-Speed Steel; 67390’s steel remains open.
No source establishes a different hook shape, throat, radius, grind, or capacity between them.
Use this rule:
pattern-controlled plant: match the exact code;
new qualified station: start from the controlled material/cut and physical samples;
abrasive duty consuming the standard position: trial the documented HSS 67450;
chipping, levering, or hard inclusions: correct the method; HSS is not a cure.
Measure edge consumption locally.
Design the pull path before cutting
The moment a hook completes the cut, resistance can disappear. Stand and fixture the work so follow-through travels into clear space, not the torso, thigh, off hand, another worker, or a machine.

end of stroke;
safe return path;
protected tool rest.
If safe follow-through is impossible, change orientation, fixture, or method.
Select hand protection for cut, puncture, abrasion, chemical, and dexterity exposure. OSHA’s hand-protection rule requires selection based on the task and identified conditions. Use eye protection where tensioned fragments or cut ends can fly under OSHA’s eye and face rule.
Protect what lies beneath
The hook’s back can reduce edge contact with a backing surface, but only if:
the throat is fully engaged;
the back remains correctly oriented;
the material does not bunch;
the hook is not rolled onto its point;
the backing has no high spot that enters the throat;
the blade has no burr or damage.
Use representative layered scrap. Inspect the protected layer under raking light and, where functional, by its specified test.
Do not call the process “substrate safe” as a universal claim. A hook can score, puncture, abrade, or drag a backing when poorly presented.
Handle tensioned strand and band deliberately
Cord, twine, strapping, webbing, and wrap can store energy.
Before a cut:
identify what is loaded;
restrain or release tension through the work procedure;
keep faces and bodies out of recoil;
use the appropriate shear for metal banding;
avoid gripping the short free end in the pull path;
contain cut ends.
A hook captures flexible stock that slides off a straight blade. That does not make it a tension-release tool.
No exact product claim assigns these four models to a specific cord, strap, or band.
Isolate machines before wrap clearing
When sheet, film, cord, or fiber is wrapped around a shaft, roll, or machine element, the blade task is servicing—not live production.
Shut down, isolate, dissipate stored energy, and verify through the site’s energy-control procedure before approaching the element. OSHA’s control of hazardous energy standard applies where unexpected energization or stored energy can injure during servicing.
Do not bump/jog a roll against a blade, cut on a coasting shaft, reach past guarding, or rely on an emergency stop as isolation.
Work outward from a controlled opening with the blade back oriented toward the protected roll only after the method proves. If layers conceal damage, wire, or hard debris, stop.
Mount mill blades as systems
For 67240, 67390, or 67450:
Identify the exact blade/pattern.
Select a documented width-class handle lead.
Verify the physical hook passes and seats without force or improvisation.
Inspect retainers, body, and blade.
Contain the unused end.
Expose only enough blade/throat for the qualified cut.
Tighten through the handle procedure.
Pull-test away from people.

The double-end format does not authorize flipping by holding an exposed hook in a bare hand. Use the controlled change route and repeat first-piece inspection after reversal.
Reject cross-species shortcuts
Do not use a V-cut class tool to:
slit broad sheet;
cut cord merely because cord fits a notch;
start an interior opening;
substitute for a hook where backing protection is the reason.
Do not use a hook to:
shave a proud molding face;
chase tire spews across a finished surface;
pry flash out of a recess;
cut a rigid gate;
trim toward an unseen insert;
score a controlled flush plane.
When the job contains both sheet severing and protrusion trimming, establish two operations and two tools. Shared “capture” language does not make the edges interchangeable.
Prove the selection on a witness
exact model/pattern;
complete handle where applicable;
stock and backing identity;
operator and date.
Use approved/rejected samples. A local result authorizes only the documented station scope.
Repeat after material, backing, thickness, fixture, tension, handle, blade pattern, maintenance, or process changes.
Build a small, honest station card
At the point of use, show:
cross-section of keep/waste;
tool and pattern;
handle/retention check;
safe pull path;
Do not copy a V-cut station card to a hook station by changing the model number. The workpiece relationship is different.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
A hook is chosen because both shapes “capture.” Redraw the cross-section: sheet through throat or protrusion above face.
The V-cut is fed a wide sheet edge. Stop and move to a proved hook or other sheet-cutting system.
The hook scratches the backing. Restore full throat engagement/back orientation, inspect damage, and retest on scrap.
The hook will not start in the middle of a sheet. Create an approved starter path or choose another method; do not stab blindly.
67390 is labeled HSS from extracted family data. Preserve the owning line’s printed-page conflict; only 67450 is settled.
The 67240 is counted as two hooks. Remove the count; its end configuration remains unverified.
A double-end blade moves in the handle. Stop, quarantine, and restore verified seating.
Tensioned strap recoils. Re-establish energy/recoil control before another cut.
A wrap is cut from a moving roll. Stop and apply the energy-control procedure.
A hook chips on a hard inclusion. Correct stock/method; do not solve impact by buying harder steel.
The history footnote
V-notches and hooks are old trade geometries whose value comes from controlling what reaches the edge: a proud feature in one, a passing layer in the other. The accepted Hyde record gives pattern identities but no inventors or first dates, so this guide claims no founding story for either form.
