Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Reinforced belting cover and dense gasket — too much deflection at .065"; buy the .083" 60450 or 60510.
  • Deep or dense foam — the flat grind wedges; the hollow-ground 60180/60480 are the foam knives, and thick bun foam wants a 6" hollow blade.
  • Sole leather and heavy hide — the sole skiver (55190) and the numbered heavy bench knives.
  • Starting a plunge cut inside a panel — the square end can't, by design; that is the English shoe knife's tip work.
  • And it is not a pry bar or scraper.

EXACT JOB METHODS FOR HYDE №60570

How the pros run it

01

Let the length work

The point of a 5" blade is the continuous stroke — pull the whole edge through the material rather than sawing with the middle few inches. A long clean draw leaves a better edge on cloth and canvas than many short ones.
02

Low angle on textiles

Cloth and webbing cut only when the blade lies down and slices; held steep, the edge shoves the weave ahead of it. This is the difference between a clean cut and a fray.
03

Tension is everything

Canvas, cover cloth, and webbing must be stretched flat and held; slack material folds around the edge and cuts ragged. Weight the straightedge, clamp the panel, tension the strap.
04

Maintain the edge

High-carbon cutlery steel, honed on a stone and stropped, holds a slicing edge that shears weave cleanly; a dull square point drags and pulls threads. Wipe the blade dry after any damp work — carbon steel rusts where stainless would not.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
4" or 5" — which square point do I want?
5" (this one) for long cuts and wide material; 4" (60090) for shaped, close work.
Why a knife instead of shears for canvas?
Heavy canvas and duck distort under scissors; a long blade drawn on a straightedge cuts them clean.
Can it cut belting?
Light webbing yes; reinforced belting cover wants the stiffer .083" 60450.
Does the square tip limit me?
It can't start a cut inside a panel — pair it with the pointed English shoe knife (55500) for that.
Sharpening?
It's a maintained high-carbon blade — hone it, strop it, wipe it dry.
