CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Conveyor belting and heavy rubber splice work — .065" is stiff for leather but the belt trades run on the .083" full-size square points; the #5 is a leather-and-tack knife, not a belt knife.
  • Sole-leather thinning — paring sole stock to thickness is the sole skiver's (55190) .072" shaving job; the #5 trims the assembled sole edge but does not skive dense sole hide.
  • Fine detail and tight corners — the wide 7/8" blade is a trimming tool, not the narrow #2's corner knife.
  • Starting a cut inside a panel — the square end refuses to pierce; that is the English shoe knife's (55500) forward-point capability.
  • And it is not a pry bar: keep the committed force in the plane of the cut, not levering the edge.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Upright passes for flush trimming

Trimming assembled goods calls for a downward shaving cut in stages, not one hard slice. Take the proud edge down in controlled passes, letting the square end ride the surface you are trimming to. Clamp for long straight cuts and draw the knife low to slice. Use the gauge and width—bear down. The #5 is made to be leaned on; that is what the .065" spine and 7/8" body are for. Keep your support hand behind the edge. With heavy leather and real force, the hand not holding the knife stays behind the cut, never ahead of a stroke that could run. The bare hardwood handle has no finger guard, so for the hardest force cuts, use the guarded full-size square-point options. Hardened high-carbon steel is made to be maintained: hone it keen on a stone, strop it, and wipe it dry after damp or oily work. Carbon steel can rust overnight. In return, you get years of re-sharpenable edge life—the reason to choose this knife over disposable utility blades.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What is the #5 best at?
Trimming assembled leather — soles, welts, uppers — flush, and cutting heavy tack and harness leather. Its .065" stiffness and 7/8" width are built for committed cuts through firm, built-up material.
5 or #6?
Stiffness versus reach. The #5 is the stiffer .065" trimming blade; the #6 is longer and wider (5" × 1") but limber .058", for long draws in softer leather and fabric.
How is it different from the English shoe knife of the same size?
The end. The #5 has a square end that won't puncture what's beneath; the 55500 English shoe knife has a forward point for cut-to-line and inside starts. Same footprint, opposite geometry.
Can it skive sole leather?
No — it trims an assembled sole edge, but thinning dense sole stock to thickness is the sole skiver's (55190) job.
Rust and upkeep?
High-carbon steel: hone, strop, wipe dry after wet or oily work. Standard for the heritage wing.
