CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Belting and heavy rubber force work — .065" is stiffer than the light numbers but still not the .083" belt-and-gasket gauge; for two-handed cutting through a conveyor belt reach for the full-size square points, guarded where policy requires.
  • Sole leather and dense hide thinning — that is the sole skiver's (55190) .072" job, not a square-point cut.
  • Fine close detail — the stiffer, longer blade is less nimble than the #1/#2 for tight-radius trims.
  • Skiving, prying, scraping — a cutting knife with a square end, not a shaving, levering, or spreading tool.
  • Choose the #4 for firm cut-to-line work; asked to do the delicate or the brutal, a lighter or heavier knife will beat it.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Use the stiffness — clamp and lean

The #4 is made to hold a line under load, especially against a clamped straightedge; that is where the .065" gauge pays off. Use a low sliding draw, with the square end helping guard the work. As with any square-point blade: keep the edge low to slice, and let the blunt nose ride the board so it does not dive into the surface beneath. Match the gauge to the stock. If the blade still flexes in the material, the job has outgrown the light series — step up to the 1" .083" full-size square points. If it feels like too much blade for soft thin leather, drop back to the #3. This is hardened high-carbon steel made to be maintained, not discarded — hone it keen on a stone, strop it true, and wipe it dry after damp or oily work, because carbon steel can rust overnight. The edge can be renewed for years; utility blades are used up and replaced, while the #4 belongs on the maintained-tool side of that line.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What does the #4 add over the #3?
A stiffer .065" blade and a little more length (3-7/8"). It holds a line under pressure where the lighter #3 would flex — the knife for firmer stock and longer committed cuts.
Is it still a light bench knife?
Yes — 3/4" wide and steerable — but it is the stiff end of the light series. For belting-grade force you want the .083" full-size knives.
When would I choose the #3 instead?
For soft, thin leather and lively general cutting, where the #4's extra stiffness is unnecessary and the lighter blade is more nimble.
Rust and upkeep?
High-carbon steel: hone on a stone, strop, wipe dry after wet or oily work. Standard for every fixed blade in this wing.
Can it splice belt or cut sole leather?
No — those are .083" and .072" jobs respectively. The #4 is a firm cut-to-pattern knife, not a belt or sole tool.
