Not for curves in anything; a drag point follows straightedges.

How the pros run it

Drag, don't saw

The point cuts on the pull, full passes end to end — short back-and-forth strokes chatter the trench ragged and wander the line. Let the count do the work: firm is good, heroic is skid; five moderate passes beat two desperate ones every time. Mind the mesh: the first pass or two ride on cement skin, then the point finds the glass mesh and the feel changes to a fibrous tearing — that's progress, not a problem; keep the passes coming until the trench sits visibly below the mesh line. Blade economics: when the point stops biting and starts burnishing — shiny trench, no depth gained — rotate in the next of the three blades. Spent points don't cut slower so much as they stop cutting and start polishing, and pressing harder just rounds them faster. Straightedge discipline: clamp it or trust a knee on it; a straightedge that walks on pass three prints a fork in the trench that every later pass follows.

Can it cut tile?

No — wrong scorer. The drag point chips glaze into a ragged line. Glazed tile belongs to the 19410's fine wheel; this tool owns the board that goes under the tile.

How many passes on cement board?

Several — three to five firm ones for typical 1/4" and 1/2" sheet. Unlike glaze, backer rewards repetition; you're trenching, not glass-cutting. Score until the groove sits below the mesh, then fold.

Which side do I score?

The smooth face. Snap the board away from the score, then cut the back-face mesh along the crease — the three-step rhythm in 2a.

Why does it come with three blades?

Because cement board consumes edges — that's the whole reason the tool is carbide, and the three-pack is the admission that carbide only slows the arithmetic. Swap when the trench starts polishing instead of deepening.

Can I just use my utility knife?

For one sheet, once. Backer's sand and glass mesh turn a steel edge into a slug in a sheet's worth of work — the one-sheet slug is the cross-line lesson this tool exists to end.

The official description mentions asbestos flooring — so it cuts that?

That's legacy wording, quoted and not carried . Pre-mid-1980s resilient flooring and its adhesives are test-first, abatement-boundary territory; no tool on this page makes suspect material safe to disturb. See 2c.

Do I need a respirator to score backer?

For a day of sheets, an N95 is cheap discipline, and outdoors-or-vacuum is the real control. Scoring beats sawing on dust by a wide margin — one of the honest arguments for this tool.
