Lay the plate nearly flat, deliver with the face, lift the leading edge a few degrees, and compress-and-shear flat with the trailing edge; the pressure comes down the handle post. Flat first, tilt as it stiffens. Carbon-steel care is mandatory and load-bearing on every job here. This blade is high-carbon steel — no stainless exists anywhere in this line — and joint compound and plaster left wet on it will pit it. Scrape, wash, and dry the blade after every session; a corroded or pitted face drags and prints its flaws into the finish, and a finishing trowel is worth exactly as much as its plate is true and clean. On flex and break-in: finishers speak of breaking a trowel in and of preferring a blade with some worked-in character, but Hyde publishes no blade thickness, no flex figure, and no factory edge treatment for this SKU — so this page describes technique, not a break-in spec, and claims no flex behavior the record doesn't state. The one construction fact under all of it is claims-backed: the blade is ground flat.

09960 or 18555 — they're both 12"×4"?
Same size, same carbon-steel class. The documented difference is build: this one's cast aluminum riveted handle with hardened/tempered/ground blade language versus the 18555's rubberized grip and a single-sentence build record. No source grades one over the other — choose on grip and documentation, not performance.
09960 or 09950?
This one is longer and narrower (flatter on open walls, the general skim length); the 09950 is shorter and wider (handier, the repair and first trowel). Same family and build.
12" or 14" (18600)?
