Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Comfortable Soft Grip: Provides a secure and comfortable hold, reducing hand fatigue during extended use.
  • Swivel Ring on Handle: Allows for smooth and easy turning of the hawk, enhancing maneuverability.
  • Lightweight Aluminum Blade: Reduces overall tool weight.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Maximum-volume, whole-field skimming and plastering. When the job is house-scale open walls and the clock is ruled by trips to the mud, the 13" (09073) is the plate that pays for itself; the 10" will have you back at the bucket more often.
  • The drywall taping sequence. Bedding tape, spotting fasteners, and the three-coat joint system belong to the pan-and-knife world (the tape-and-finish drywall joints guide and the drywall knives line). The hawk can feed a taping knife in a hybrid grip, but the hanging pan is the natural partner for seam work.
  • Finishing the surface. The hawk carries; it does not lay, float, or compress. It never touches the finished wall — a trowel or knife does that.
  • A hawk you'll outgrow instantly on production work. If you already know your work is whole-room fields all day, buy the 13" first; the 10" is the everyone-else answer and the second hawk even for finishers who run the big plate on walls.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Maneuverability is the 10" skill, and it is mostly restraint plus rotation

Keep the pile centered and modest; the small plate rewards a controlled load and punishes an ambitious one. Let the swivel ring do the turning — it costs nothing on this plate and keeps the pile's fresh edge always facing the blade, which is half of why the 10" feels quick. Use the staging-post handle — even a light hawk has nowhere safe to lie down loaded, and the open handle parks it upright on a post at working height, a jobsite habit worth keeping from day one. Clean the plate to bare metal at every break — dried crumbs seed lumps into every later load, and the grooves that grip wet mud grip dried mud harder, so a groove left full of set compound is a defect factory (cleaning cadence is trade practice; no claim covers it). Aluminum does not rust — unlike the carbon-steel trowels this hawk serves, the plate needs no drying ritual; keep the grooves clean and the plate flat and it is maintained.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
How big is this hawk?
10" — the smaller of Hyde's two. By Hyde's record, size is the only difference from the 13"; everything else about the pair is identical.
Is this the right first hawk?
For most buyers, yes: lighter on the wrist, quick to turn, easy overhead, and the size the patch-and-repair work is queued to. Step up to the 13" when your work is whole-room fields all day.
Why is the 10" the patch hawk and not the 13"?
Patching is stop-and-go, close, and often overhead — a light, maneuverable plate held over a single repair beats a big plate that overhangs the fix and loads the wrist. For patch-and-repair plaster work, this size is the better fit than the 13".
Does aluminum rust?
No. Keep the grooves clean and the plate flat and it needs no drying ritual — unlike the carbon-steel trowels it feeds, which do.
What are the grooves for?
They hold wet compound against the tilt so it doesn't slide off the plate — Hyde's claim: better control, less slip.
Can I run drywall tape and seams off it?
You can feed a taping knife in a hybrid grip, but seam work is a pan-and-knife job; the light hanging pan is the more comfortable partner for taping.
Can this alone skim a wall?
No — it carries the mud; a trowel or wide knife lays the skim. The method is in the skim-coat application guide.
