  • Grooving and edging. Control joints want a groover (not sold here); rims want the 18040. The 18000 finishes the field between those tools.
  • Mortar work. Nothing about 14 flat inches serves a bed joint, a head joint, or a repoint — the trowels at the top of this line exist because it can't.
  • Exterior burnishing. Not a tool limit — a doctrine limit, §2a. The blade will happily over-trowel a driveway; the driveway will spend winters making you regret it.
  • Wall-first buying. Parge is a legitimate moonlight; a plaster/skim career belongs to the finishing-trowels line (18600 class), per the address split in §2b.

Flat first, always

The first pass planes; tilt belongs to the passes after. Sweep in arcs, lap by half. Long strokes from the shoulder, each arc burying the last one's edge line. Let the slab set the tempo. Steel returns when the last marks stand firm — pushing the interval smears; missing it burnishes nothing. Work backward off your finish. Kneeboards leapfrog; the surface behind the blade is done and stays untouched. Pressure comes up as the slab comes up. Early passes glide; late passes bear down — the blade's spring against a stiffening surface is the compaction doing its work. Care for the documented build: rinse the high-carbon blade before paste cures, dry it, and store it dry — hardened carbon steel pits under wet alkaline residue; keep the wood handle ⚑ dry and give it an occasional wipe of oil; check the riveted aluminum mountings for looseness the way you'd check any riveted tool, and retire drama rather than working over a slab with a loosening blade.

When can I start troweling?
When the bleed-water sheen is gone and a boot prints a bare quarter inch. The wait is the finish; §2a carries the whole clock.
Why does my old slab dust and scale?
Steel over bleed water (dusting), or a hard-troweled exterior surface that lost its air entrainment (scaling) — the two mistakes this guide's doctrine paragraphs exist to prevent.
Do I need a float first?
Yes — bull float at placement, and this line honestly doesn't sell one. The 18000's work starts after the float's is done.
Is it also a plaster/drywall trowel?
Hyde's description says it serves there , the parge moonlight is real, and the wall-first buyer still belongs in the finishing-trowels line (18600 class). Address split, §2b.
14" or 12"?
Field work and production slabs, 14". Pads, piers, and patches smaller than the blade's sweep, the 12" class — noting the 18520's own page opens with its evidence gate .
Is the handle really wood?
Hyde's record says smooth wood — under a brand name that elsewhere means soft grip, which is exactly why the flag exists and a physical unit settles it .
Care?
Rinse before cure, dry the steel, oil the wood occasionally, respect the rivets. A finishing blade's flatness is its value; store it where nothing bends it.
