DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Small doorknob holes — a 6x6 over a 2-inch hole is a needlessly wide mound and an 18-inch feather for a job the 4x4 (09898) buries with a foot of feather. Match the plate to the hole; oversizing is paid in labor.
  • Dents, and nail/pin/screw holes — filler and spackle jobs, not bridging jobs.
  • Holes past ~4 inches / past the bond margin — the 8x8 (09007) is the next rung, and beyond that the plate system ends: cut in board. Don't stack plates.
  • Curved, textured, or out-of-plane walls — the rigid square bridges; the conforming water-activated fabric is the honest answer.
  • Gloss or hard-sidelit walls where flatness is everything — at 6 inches the crown is broad; where it can't hide, decline the surface mount and cut in flush.

How the pros run it

01

The margin scales with the plate

A 6x6 needs a full inch of sound wall around a 4-inch hole — six inches of clean, tight ring. If the damage or dust intrudes anywhere on that ring, the patch hinges there and cracks its perimeter; clean wider or step up to the 8x8.
02

Feather the whole 18 inches

The wider the plate, the wider the mound, and the wider the feather that hides it. Stopping the feather short is the number-one reason a 6x6 ghosts an outline at low sun; carry it out and thin it to nothing.
03

Stroke across and past every edge

Drive compound from wall, across patch, onto wall beyond — never lead a knife into a patch edge from outside, which lifts edges and rings the perimeter with a crack.
04

Prime, then inspect in raking light

Bare compound flashes; prime the repair and check with a flashlight held flat to the wall before repainting.
05

Old walls

pre-1978 paint may carry lead and old wall materials may predate the 1977 asbestos ban; a patch-over disturbs almost nothing, which is a virtue — keep it that way and don't sand hard into old surfaces without testing.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What size hole does a 6x6 cover?
A fist- or furniture-corner hit, roughly 3 to 4 inches — the patch needs about an inch of sound wall all around. Smaller (doorknob) → 4x4 (09898); bigger → 8x8 (09007).
Should I even use a plate this big, or cut in board?
Your call, and it's a real one at this size: the plate is faster and always crowns slightly; a cut-in patch is flatter and slower. Flat, ordinarily-lit wall → plate. Gloss, hard side light, or a sighted corridor → cut in.
How wide do I feather it?
About 18 inches — three times the patch width — in thin, progressively wider coats. Stopping short is why a 6x6 ghosts an outline.
Can I patch a hollow-core door with it?
Yes — it's the door-damage size. Trim the skin flush, scuff the enamel, feather wide, repaint the whole slab.
Overhead?
For a modest hole on a flat ceiling, yes; for a real fist-size ceiling hole, the water-activated fabric is usually the better tool because gravity works against a plate this size.
Single or 50-pack?
One hole → this single (09899); stocking a crew → the identical patch fifty to a box (09904).
