Holes larger than about 6" across — past the 8x8's bond ceiling you are cutting in new board, full stop.
A dead-flat, no-crown result under critical light — the plate always crowns; if that's the standard, cut in.
And it is not a structural repair for a wall that's failing behind the surface (water damage, rot, framing movement) — find and fix the cause first; a patch over a moving or wet substrate is a repair with a schedule.

What's behind it — do I need backing?

Nothing. The perforated aluminum plate bridges the hole on its own; that's the whole point of a plate patch.

What size hole does the 8x8 cover?

Up to roughly 6" across — it needs about an inch of sound wall bond all the way around the hole.

When should I NOT use it?

Holes bigger than ~6", or any repair that must be dead-flat under critical light — cut in new drywall instead. The plate always leaves a slight crown you skim over.

Will the metal rust or bleed through the paint?

No — Hyde rates it rust-resistant and non-bleeding.

Drywall, plaster, or wood?

How do I hide the square edge?

Skim wider than the plate in thin feathered coats, sanding between; the bigger the plate, the wider you feather.
