  • Fill and skim coats. Five inches can't feather a seam out to the 8"–12" those coats need; past the tape coat it leaves a ridge in the tapered recess. Wide blades take over.
  • Scraping. Flexible carbon folds on a ridge or dried spatter — that's stiff-blade work (02601 or a retired knife), not this.
  • Setting popped nails. Wood handle, no Hammer Head® steel butt cap — you can't dimple a popped screw with it. That belongs to an HH model (the carbon 02770 at 5", the stainless 01750 at 5").
  • Putty-knife jobs. Nail-hole filling and paint scraping is the putty knife's aisle, a separate Hyde line.

How the pros run it

Palm the handle, thumb onto the blade back for control, and learn the flex point

the place the hollow-ground carbon starts to bow. Work right at it: enough bow to feather compound, not so much the blade folds. Load compound across the blade from the pan rather than on the tip, and keep it light and even. Run the pan discipline every pass — load, work, wipe on the rim on the return so setting compound never rides back into fresh mud (that is what the line's pans, plastic 09060 through stainless 09012, are for). Then the carbon rule, which is not optional: wash the blade the instant you finish and dry it before it is put away — water-based compound on carbon overnight blooms rust, and a pitted edge prints every flaw into the next coat. The clear-coat delays that but wears first where the blade works. No appetite for the ritual? Buy the stainless equivalent. Keep the hardwood handle drying out between jobs, not soaking.

Why 5" instead of 4" or 6"?
It's the tweener: more wipe and reach than the 4", more corner control than the 6". One knife for flats and angles both.
Apply or scrape?
Apply — flexible spreading blade. Scraping is the 02601's job.
Will it rust?
Yes, it's carbon — wash and dry every time. Zero-maintenance option: stainless 06778 / 06779.
Hardwood vs nylon handle?
Same blade, same job; hardwood is the traditional grip that outlives repeated washing.
Set a popped screw with it?
No Hammer Head cap here — use 01750 or 02770.
Is it a putty knife?
No — putty knives are the narrower paint-aisle tools; this finishes drywall seams and corners.
