Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • High Carbon Steel Blade: Stiff blade for tough scraping tasks, individually ground, polished, and clear-coated.
  • Solvent-Resistant Hardwood Handle: Durable handle designed to withstand harsh chemicals and prolonged use.
  • Heavy-Duty Performance: Stiff blade excels in scraping and removing stubborn materials.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Filling and spreading — a stiff blade can't conform, so compound work belongs to flexible knives.
  • Striking — no Hammer Head®; the handle splits under a blow.
  • Prying — the blade is ground to scrape, not lever.
  • Deep profile scraping — a straight 3" chisel flattens a molding profile; coves, beads, and spindles want the contour scrapers (10400 with its shaped blades, or the 10450/10460 kits), never a straight edge dragged across a shape.
  • And wet, no-maintenance duty — if the tool will live in wallpaper water and stripper sludge and get put away wet, the stainless 06579 is the honest answer; carbon punishes neglect.

How the pros run it

01

Keep the back flat

The chisel's entire advantage is that its flat face references the surface; work bevel-up with the back down and the edge shaves clean, work bevel-down or rolled up onto a corner and it gouges. Angle: low. Direction: push — this is a straight-shanked stiff push scraper; planing coats off wood you mean to keep is pull-scraper work elsewhere in the line. Edge care: file the single bevel square and keep the flat back truly flat — a chisel with a rounded back has lost the geometry that defines it; dress the bevel with a mill file and only ever lap the back flat, never bevel it. Carbon discipline: dry the blade after wet work and keep the edge lightly oiled or coated — the factory clear-coat guards the flats, not a freshly filed edge. Never strike the handle: it is wood; use a hammer for fasteners.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Why a wood handle in a world of rubber grips?
Solvent resistance. Strippers and thinners degrade many synthetic grips; hardwood takes them for years. That is the whole argument for this tool over the overmolded 06401.
Can I hammer nails with it?
No. There is no striking cap and the handle is wood — a blow splits it. Use a hammer, or choose a Hammer Head® scraper (06401, 06579).
Will the blade rust?
It is high-carbon steel, clear-coated on the flats. Keep it dry, and oil a freshly filed edge. If you want maintenance-free wet work, the stainless 06579 is the tool.
What does the chisel edge do that a square edge doesn't?
Its flat back rides the surface so it shaves specks and residue off flat stock without the corner-gouging a double-ground square blade gives on a flat pass.
Can I scrape molding with it?
Only the flats. A straight chisel flattens a profile — coves, beads, and spindles are contour-scraper work (10400 / 10450 / 10460).
