Read the two knives without inventing a hierarchy

The accepted facts establish:

40060: Sloyd Wood Knife, high-carbon-steel 2-5/8-inch blade, hardwood handle;

40160: Sloyd Knife, high-carbon-steel 3-1/8-inch blade, hardwood handle.

The accepted difference is one-half inch of blade length.

blade width, thickness, grind, bevel angle, hardness, or flex;

handle dimensions, hand fit, or handedness;

age or skill suitability;

a guard or sheath;

wood species/cut capacity;

sharpening angle, abrasive, compound, or interval;

that one model is safer, finer, stronger, or more advanced.

Choose by inspected condition, secure grip, clear reach, cut geometry, and scrap trial. Do not call 40060 a child’s knife or 40160 a professional upgrade.

Choose a project that belongs to knife work

A sloyd knife excels at controlled shaping:

spoons/handles/pegs and small utility forms;

surface refinement after gross stock removal;

stop cuts and relief cuts within a proven method.

It is not the honest tool for:

splitting heavy stock;

sawing to length;

chopping across large sections;

cutting nails, wire, dirty reclaimed stock, or unknown composites;

forcing through a knot;

working a blank that cannot be safely held.

Use saw, axe, drawknife, drill, vise, or another suitable system for the operation it owns. A knife project should begin near enough to shape that each cut remains controllable.

Select and inspect the blank

Identify the wood when possible.

Inspect all faces and ends for:

grain direction/runout;

knots and pin knots;

bark, grit, embedded metal;

rot, punky zones, resin pockets;

cross-grain short features;

severe twist or instability;

prior finish/treatment/contamination.

Reject or redesign around defects that can release a chip unpredictably or leave a weak feature.

Mark the keeper form inside the blank, leaving a deliberate allowance. Mark the grain direction on changing faces.

If the wood is unknown, treated, painted, coated, moldy, or reclaimed, resolve material and dust/chemical hazards before cutting or finishing.

Decide green, air-dry, or dry work intentionally

Fresh green wood usually cuts with less force but may move, check, shrink, or distort as it dries. Dry wood holds dimensions better but often requires more edge condition and smaller cuts.

Those are trade behaviors, not model capacities.

Record the blank condition and choose the project/allowance accordingly.

If the surface becomes harder, glassier, more brittle, or unexpectedly resistant, stop and identify whether the blank dried unevenly, contains reaction wood, has a knot, or has been treated.

Inspect and guard the knife

Before use, inspect:

both blade faces;

secure blade-to-handle connection;

hardwood handle cracks, looseness, contamination, or swelling;

evidence of bending, overheating, or improper grinding;

guard/storage condition.

Do not test sharpness on a thumb or fingernail.

Use a controlled paper, end-grain, or project-specific witness cut that does not put flesh in the edge path.

Quarantine a loose, cracked, deeply corroded, bent, chipped, or uncertain knife.

Choose 40060 or 40160 by the cut

Place each guarded knife at the station and rehearse the intended cut without touching wood.

The shorter 40060 may support a local choice where less blade reach is useful. The longer 40160 may support a local choice where the intended slicing path benefits from more edge length.

But physical trial must answer:

can the hand grip securely without crowding the blade;

does the edge reach the intended surface without excessive exposure;

can the cut finish in open space;

can the wrist remain neutral;

can the blank remain supported;

does the knife track in matching scrap?

Document the choice as a job fit, not a product superiority claim.

Build a carving station

Work seated or standing with:

enough light to read grain and edge position;

a bench/fixture that controls the blank;

no person in the projected cut/release path;

no loose clothing, cord, or clutter near the knife;

guarded storage within reach;

waste container that does not require reaching across the edge;

first-aid/emergency process known.

Secure the blank whenever the cut can be made more safely with a vise, clamp, bench hook, carving support, or fixture.

Do not use a thigh, abdomen, chest, or free palm as the stopping surface.

Plan the sequence from large to small

strong grain-supported ends;

delicate features to leave thick;

stop/relief cuts;

cut direction on each face.

Remove broad waste before forming thin handles, rims, points, tails, or cross-grain projections.

Leave extra material where a future cut needs support.

The next operation should never depend on gripping a feature you have already made fragile.

Learn the five questions before every cut

Before the edge enters wood, answer:

What exact chip am I removing?

Which way does the grain run here?

Where are both hands?

Where will the edge stop or exit?

What happens if the chip releases early?

If any answer is unclear, reposition, remark, re-support, or shorten the planned cut.

This brief pause is the core control system of hand carving.

Establish a controlled grip

Hold the handle firmly enough to steer but not so tightly that the wrist locks.

Keep fingertips behind the cutting edge and out of the continuation of the blade.

The support hand controls the blank through a safe surface or fixture. When a close guiding grip is used within a trained carving method, its protective geometry must be taught and physically demonstrated; this guide does not invent a universal hand placement.

Select any hand protection from the full hazard assessment. OSHA’s hand-protection standard requires selection based on the hazards and task conditions. Protection does not make a body-backed cut acceptable.

Make slicing cuts, not forced wedges

Present a usable section of edge at a low, controllable bite and draw it through the wood while advancing.

A slicing motion uses edge length and produces a thinner, more predictable chip than pressing straight inward.

Start with a small chip.

surface sheen/tear;

whether the cut dives or rises;

whether grain changes ahead.

If force climbs, reduce bite, change direction, resharpen, or use another tool. Do not add shoulder force to a stalled knife.

Work with the grain

When the edge moves with supportive grain, fibers separate ahead of it and the surface can remain clean.

When the edge meets rising grain, it can dive under fibers and split beyond the line.

At each face:

make a short test cut in allowance;

reverse direction if fibers lift ahead;

shorten the cut near runout;

approach a crown or grain reversal from opposite directions;

leave difficult zones proud for controlled refinement.

Grain can reverse within a few inches and around every knot. The arrow marked at layout is a lead, not permission to stop reading.

Use stop cuts to protect boundaries

A stop cut severs fibers at the end of planned waste so a following cut cannot split past it.

Make the stop only to the qualified depth needed for the intended chip. Approach it with smaller slicing cuts and let the waste release at the stop.

Do not lever the blade sideways in the stop or twist out a reluctant chip.

Refresh the stop as the shape changes. If a split begins beyond it, stop immediately, stabilize the blank, and reassess whether the feature remains salvageable.

Shape facets before rounding

Round forms are easier to control as a sequence of flats:

establish reference faces;

remove corner facets;

divide the new corners again;

compare symmetry/thickness;

refine only after the overall line is correct.

Facets show exactly where material has been removed. Random scraping hides the logic and creates hollows.

Use pencil witness lines between stages. Stop while a line remains if it represents final material.

Handle end grain and knots honestly

End grain asks the edge to sever fiber ends and may need a keener edge, smaller bite, alternate direction, or different tool/support.

Near a knot:

expect direction changes;

work from sound wood toward the boundary only when the grain supports it;

do not drive through hard knotwood;

watch for surrounding checks;

keep delicate features thick.

If the knot is loose, rotten, cracked, or structurally central, redesign or reject the blank.

Control the knife at starts and exits

Many injuries and ruined surfaces happen after the chip releases.

Start with the edge already aligned and the body balanced. Plan the exit into open space or a safe stop.

As the cut nears completion:

keep the wrist from rolling;

watch the tip;

do not accelerate to “finish.”

Never catch a dropped knife. Clear hands/feet, let it stop, then retrieve and inspect.

Inspect the form frequently

Guard the knife before measuring, rotating, sighting, or comparing.

symmetry if required;

fit to mating components.

View under raking light and from the ends.

Do not carve away a high-looking area until the reference proves it is waste.

Maintain the edge without inventing geometry

High-carbon steel is accepted for both knives. Exact grind, bevel angle, abrasive, compound, steel hardness, and maintenance interval are not.

inspect/record the existing geometry;

use a qualified geometry-matched method;

remove only enough steel to restore a continuous edge;

preserve point and blade faces;

deburr/strop through the validated route;

prove on scrap.

Do not impose an internet angle or convert either blade to a preferred grind.

Control chips, dust, finish, and storage

Knife-cut chips are generally larger than sanding dust, but later sanding/finishing can create wood/finish exposures. Follow the exact material SDS and project controls.

Brush chips away only after guarding the edge.

At session end:

clean blade compatibly;

dry high-carbon steel promptly;

inspect handle/edge;

apply only a verified protective method;

store dry and secured.

No oil, solvent, guard, or storage interval is an accepted model fact.

Record repeat work

For repeat forms, retain:

wood/species/condition;

model used and physical reason;

cut sequence/directions;

Requalify after wood, moisture, blank geometry, knife, edge geometry, fixture, or project change.

Use a cut hierarchy for concave and tight areas

Open exterior facets can be shaped with ordinary slicing access. Tight valleys and concave transitions change the problem because the handle, point, or unsupported edge may contact before the intended cutting section does.

Before entering a hollow:

mark its lowest boundary;

leave generous wall around it;

establish access from both ends where possible;

use stop cuts to isolate short chips;

rehearse which blade section will contact;

confirm the handle clears the form;

support the opposite wall.

Do not bend, twist, or lever either sloyd to make it follow a concavity. If the physical blade cannot reach with a safe controlled slice, use the project’s spoon knife, gouge, drill, saw, or other purpose-built tool.

The accepted records do not promise hollowing geometry.

Pause before surface finishing

Knife facets can be the finished language of a whittled object.

guard the knife;

remove loose chips;

inspect for hidden checks;

verify final shape/fit;

preserve intentional crisp edges;

mark any area still requiring tool work;

identify wood/condition and contaminants.

Do not use finishing to disguise a structural split or an overcut.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

40060 is selected for a child. Remove the age claim; select through supervised physical trial.

40160 is assumed to be “advanced.” Use only the documented length difference.

The blank rests against the thigh. Move it to positive workholding.

A dull edge is forced. Stop and restore it through the qualified geometry.

A knot is powered through. Change direction, tool, blank, or design.

A thin feature is formed too early. Restore sequence; leave support until late.

The knife is twisted from a stop cut. Withdraw and release waste through smaller cuts.

Measurement happens with a live edge in hand. Guard/park first.

A local wood success becomes a Hyde capacity claim. Keep it in the project record only.
