Acceptance criterion: the exact required coverage or transfer target and every accompanying condition, such as required support at edges/corners or limits on void size and concentration. Copy it exactly; do not replace it with a generic percentage.

Inspection method: how the tile is selected, lifted, handled, observed, measured or estimated, photographed, and returned or discarded. Define what evidence must be retained.

Build the inspection plan before the first lift

Reconcile the system documents

Read the project specification, named standard or method, tile instructions, mortar TDS/SDS, substrate/backer instructions, membrane instructions, and quality plan together. A mortar advertised for tile, a trowel advertised for ceramic tile, and a tile advertised for the intended room do not automatically form an approved system.

If two controlling documents give different targets, methods, notch recommendations, back-treatment directions, or timing rules, do not average them or choose the easier one.

Translate the exact inspection frequency into locations or events the crew can follow. Mark required checks, witness points, and system-defined triggers. Where the quality plan requires a new check after a change in tile, mortar, substrate, environment, installer, tool, or observed behavior, map that trigger exactly.

Do not add a pseudo-precise percentage unless the controlling method explains how it is determined.

Choose and inspect only an admitted tool

Start with the system’s exact meter, then ask whether a member of the numeric union matches it. Inspect the complete blade, flat face, notched edge, handle or spine, and model identity. Dried material, corrosion that affects control, bent steel, rounded or broken teeth, altered notches, a loose handle, or an unreadable identity can make the trial incomparable to the specified meter.

Clean a serviceable tool by the permitted method. Quarantine a damaged or altered one. Do not file, bend, or grind a notch and continue calling it the printed geometry. Do not move to an unregistered model within this guide.

Prepare one controlled trial

Accept the surfaces and material

Inspect the substrate and tile back under their exact documents. Record required surface condition, preparation, cleanliness, flatness or other geometry, moisture, temperature, membrane state, tile-back residue or release material, and any required treatment. This guide creates no tolerance and names no universal cleaner, primer, wetting step, grinding method, or repair product.

Prepare the exact mortar to its current TDS: proportions, order, water or named additive, equipment, speed, duration, rest, remix, temperature, and usable condition. Add nothing by habit. If the product contains Portland cement, follow its SDS for skin and eye controls; wet cement can cause caustic burns. If the chemistry differs, follow that exact SDS rather than importing cement assumptions.

Spread a deliberately bounded test

Select a representative location that the inspection plan allows and from which the tile can be lifted without damaging a controlled assembly. Spread only the area the exact product and actual conditions allow to remain eligible through placement and inspection.

Use the flat side, notched side, working angle, ridge direction or other pattern, and bed limits required or permitted by the selected system. Where the admitted method calls for straight parallel ridges and movement across them, execute that method consistently; do not turn it into a universal geometry rule for every mortar.

Keep movement spaces, drains, transitions, penetrations, and other reserved details clear. A coverage trial is not permission to bridge a joint or bury an unresolved assembly condition.

Place the tile inside the controlling clock

Place and embed the tile with the admitted motion, pressure, beating aid, or leveling device. Apply the exact back treatment before placement only when the system requires or permits it. “Back-butter every large tile” and “never back-butter” are both universal rules this guide refuses; the exact system controls.

Track the product’s open-time and condition requirements using the method its TDS specifies. A clock value printed for particular laboratory conditions is not automatically the field allowance. If the instructions require a transfer, skin, tack, or other condition check, perform it.

Lift and preserve the evidence

Lift the selected tile at the exact point and by the method the inspection plan requires. Avoid scraping, rocking, or levering in a way that smears the bed and destroys the evidence. Support the tile and protect adjacent work. If lifting could damage a membrane, backer, heating system, or other controlled layer, the inspection method must resolve that risk before spreading begins.

Observe both the substrate side and tile back. Compare the observation with the exact acceptance rule. The presence of mortar on both faces, the absence of a hollow sound, or a visually flat tile is not a substitute for that comparison.

Classify the result:

CORRECT AND RETEST: an authorized, identifiable process cause can be corrected while preserving the qualified system.

REJECT/HOLD: the criterion is not met, the cause is unresolved, the correction would leave the admitted system, the evidence is destroyed, or a controlling conflict remains.

Correct without inventing a new system

Diagnose the failed check

Remove failed test material by the exact approved cleanup method while that method remains available. Preserve photographs, notes, tile, and material samples when the quality plan requires them. Review the potential causes against recorded evidence:

wrong, damaged, dirty, altered, or inconsistently held meter;

substrate preparation or condition outside the system requirement;

tile-back condition outside its instruction;

mortar proportioning, mixing, conditioning, age, or field condition;

spread continuity, angle, pattern, or thickness inconsistent with the admitted method;

placement or embedding motion inconsistent with the method;

material placed outside the permitted open-time or transfer condition;

omitted, excessive, or forbidden back treatment;

changed environment, batch, tile, installer, or equipment;

a notch/system combination that cannot achieve the exact criterion in the observed assembly.

That list is diagnostic, not an ordered repair ladder.

Authorize one correction and repeat the controlled trial

Record the identified cause, the source authorizing the correction, and exactly what changes. Repeat the trial under the same evidence discipline. A change of notch, back treatment, mixing process, substrate repair, mortar, tile, or assembly may require a new manufacturer recommendation, project approval, submittal, or mockup rather than a quick field retry.

If a registered Hyde tool cannot meet the criterion within the exact admitted system, reject that tool for this installation. Row membership is not permission to keep changing the job until the tool appears to work.

Continue at the proved process and required frequency

After a passing test, set only with the documented process and within the controlling conditions. Repeat checks exactly at the written frequency and events.

Stop the field when a required check is missed, a trigger occurs without a check, recorded conditions leave the admitted range, the process changes, or a sample fails. Segregate the potentially affected area from accepted work.

What goes wrong—and the controlled response

The crew quotes “80% dry / 95% wet” but cannot name the controlling edition, method, or project requirement. Stop and bind the exact criterion. The older line packet flags those figures as secondary-summary material, and this guide does not promote them to a universal rule.

The system specifies a notch, but the installer chooses by tile size or the tool already in the truck. Reject the setup. Match the exact meter and verify that the named Hyde model actually carries it.

Its model edge remains in the graph, but its identity, format, build, notch, and duty are not established by official Hyde evidence.

The lifted tile was scraped sideways and the pattern is unreadable. Mark the sample invalid, remove the test material as authorized, and repeat with the approved lifting method. Do not grade destroyed evidence.

Bare areas or uncollapsed ridges appear. Hold the affected process. Diagnose tool, surface, material, spread, timing, back-treatment, and embedding facts against the exact system.

Mortar is pushed into joints or the tile cannot maintain plane. Stop and inspect. Excess material can reflect meter, angle, preparation, placement, or assembly issues; it does not prove one universal cause. Clean reserved spaces while the TDS permits.

The ridge surface changed before tile placement. Apply the product’s own transfer/open-time rule. If it is outside the admitted condition, remove and replace by the approved method; do not revive it by folklore.

A passing first check is followed by a changed batch, tile back, substrate, temperature, installer, or tool. Follow the quality plan’s change-trigger rule.

A failed required check is discovered after surrounding tile has been placed. Mark and protect the potentially affected area, preserve records, and obtain the project’s investigation/removal plan. Do not use sound, surface appearance, or one later passing tile to waive the missed evidence.

A correction would require a different mortar, assembly, notch, or back treatment. Treat it as a system change, not a technique tweak. Secure the required submittal, manufacturer instruction, mockup, or project approval before retrying.

Cleanup, tool control, and closeout

Remove mortar from lifted tile, substrate, tile faces, joints, movement spaces, tools, containers, and adjacent finishes only by the methods and within the timing allowed by the exact TDS/SDS and component instructions. Do not transfer water, acid, solvent, mechanical removal, or disposal advice from another chemistry.

Clean the admitted Hyde tool before residue changes its working edge. Dry carbon steel where required, inspect the full blade and notch pattern, and protect the edge in storage. Quarantine a trowel that bent, loosened, corroded, chipped, rounded, or otherwise changed during the work; the passing trial does not qualify a later-damaged meter.

Contain unused mortar, solids, slurry, wash water, packaging, and removed test material under the SDS, site plan, and local disposal rules. Do not discharge an unapproved chemistry or cement solids to a drain or onto the site.

Coverage is hidden after installation; the record is the durable proof that it was checked rather than assumed.

The history footnote—why the lift matters

The notched edge made adhesive placement a repeatable mechanical meter, but its printed geometry never guaranteed the hidden result. The lift-and-check exposes that bed before the process covers a room.

What coverage percentage should I use? The exact percentage or other transfer criterion named by the controlling project standard and current installation-system documents. This guide supplies none. Record the source, edition/revision, edge/corner conditions, and method before work.

How often should I lift tile? At the exact frequency and events required by the project quality plan, named standard/method, and manufacturer instructions. There is no universal “first tile plus every X square feet” rule here.

Which notch should I start with? The notch admitted by the exact tile-setting system. The five row members are product leads, not a generic progression from small to large. Hyde’s duty wording does not replace mortar-TDS authorization.

Should I back-butter? Only when the exact system requires or permits it for this tile and assembly. Write the treatment and acceptance method on the control sheet. Do not add or omit it as a universal correction.
