How to Trim Selvage and Roll-Goods Edges by Hand

Evidence boundary: All three products are bare 3/4-inch, .072-inch, flat-grind mill blades. Models 62420 and 62450 are the same listed 088 pattern and 6-1/2-inch size in Standard and HSS steel; 62480 is the Standard 2607 pattern at 6 inches.
Job: trim an authorized edge from cloth, nonwovens, or other soft roll goods at an approved manual station when the job has been deliberately routed to hand trimming rather than a machine slitter.
Time: determined by the work order, material handling plan, setup, approved cut method, and inspection plan.
Difficulty: simple cutting motion, high process-control burden. The edge can be irreversible, the blade is an exposed industrial component, and a roll or web may carry machine, handling, or stored-energy hazards that a hand knife cannot control.

These are bare blades, not complete hand tools. It does not prove retained-end geometry, seating, engagement, projection, fastener condition, torque, or retention under this operation.
Everything else required: a released work order, material identity, edge requirement, and manual-trim instruction · a qualified handle, retention system, and setting instruction · an approved manual station, support, restraint, and guide · defined inspection and waste routes · sharps, quarantine, and fragment controls · approved cleanup provisions · the employer's task hazard assessment and selected protection. A bare blade supplies none of these.
Before the blade comes out
Decide whether this is truly a manual-trim job
Classify the physical situation before selecting a blade:
Detached piece or roll at a dedicated manual station: proceed only if the handling plan, support, restraint, exact cut requirement, and qualified blade system are all present.
Material still threaded through or attached to equipment: stop. The machine-specific operating or servicing procedure decides whether the material must be removed, the equipment placed in a safe service position, or hazardous energy controlled before any manual work.
Cut requires entry past guarding or into a danger zone: a long blade, straightedge, glove, slow speed, jog mode, emergency stop, or second employee does not make the entry safe. Use the employer's authorized machine procedure.
Hand trim proposed because the automatic process is failing: quarantine the affected material and escalate the process fault. Repeated hand rework must not normalize a damaged guard, bad setup, tracking problem, or out-of-control slitting process.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 requires guarding against point-of-operation, nip-point, rotating-part, and related machine hazards. It also says special hand tools supplement required guarding; they do not replace it. Where the work exposes an employee to unexpected startup or stored-energy release during servicing, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 places shutdown, isolation, lockout/tagout, stored-energy control, and verification under the employer's energy-control program. This page cannot decide whether a particular task is normal production or servicing, or whether an exception applies.
Read the work order as a cut contract
Do not infer any of those fields from the roll's appearance, an old chalk line, the opposite edge, a neighboring product, or what another shift usually does. “Trim the selvage” is not a complete instruction when the allowable edge boundary, material state, and inspection result are undefined.
This guide intentionally supplies no edge allowance, squareness, waviness, fray, burr, taper, width, or finish criterion. It also supplies no ply count, material orientation, tension, or feed direction.
Admit one of the three blade identities—without inventing differences
Start with the station's released pattern. A pattern-locked plant reorders its named pattern; a visually similar 3/4-inch blade is not an automatic substitute.
That does not establish a universal material list, a change interval, a sharper edge, a stronger blade, a faster rate, or a better finish. Use 62450 only when the plant has qualified HSS for the named material and process.
62420 versus 62480: both are Standard 3/4-inch × .072-inch flat blades. The supported distinction is 6-1/2 inches versus 6 inches and pattern 088 versus 2607. Do not claim an unlisted point, corner, contour, stiffness result, or cut-quality difference. If the station does not already specify which pattern it accepts, put the choice on hold.
62450 versus 62480: these differ in steel, length, and pattern. The record supplies no direct A/B performance test. Do not combine the separate differences into an invented application ranking.
Prove the blade is part of a released hand tool
Never hold a loose 62420, 62450, or 62480 in a bare or gloved hand to make the cut. Never wrap a tang in tape, cloth, rubber, or scrap; clamp it with pliers; improvise a wooden grip; or use an unverified handle because the nominal width appears to fit.
Before either can be used, the exact station packet must establish:
the blade pattern and handle model are an approved physical pair;
the retained-end geometry and required orientation match;
the handle, slot, contact faces, and every retention component meet the current condition criteria;
the seating datum, required engagement, and allowed projection are defined;
the installation tool, fastening method, and any controlled value are stated;
a non-cutting retention check and post-cut readback are defined;
the assembly is released for this material, support, cut, and station.
If any field is absent, mark the setup HOLD. A blade sliding into a handle, the set screw becoming tight, or an assembly surviving a prior shift does not close the evidence gap.
Admit the manual station and material support
The work instruction must name how the roll or sheet is supported, restrained, presented, and kept from shifting while the edge is cut. This guide does not prescribe tension, clamping force, fixture material, table construction, straightedge mass, underlay, sacrificial surface, or operator orientation.
Before release, verify identity; the approved support and guide; support through the cut zone; control of the removed portion; clearance from the documented blade and material-release paths; protection against the blade exiting into a surface, component, or unseen layer; adequate light; and a work area containing only the active blade system and required job materials.
If the material must be tensioned, its tension comes from the released process—not a worker pulling against the blade. If the cut requires another person to hold the stock in the blade path, the setup has failed. Redesign or use the approved fixture.
Run the controlled hand trim
Preserve the incoming state
Record the material, lot, work-order revision, designated edge, blade assembly, station, operator authorization, and incoming condition. Preserve unexpected damage, contamination, distortion, prior cuts, splices, hard objects, or mismatches before cleaning or trimming.
Do not cut through an unknown inclusion to “see what it is.” Wire, staples, clips, hard debris, machine fragments, or an unidentified embedded object can damage the blade, create fragments, and change the hazard. Quarantine the area and route it to the responsible owner.
Inspect and set up under the released criteria
Keep the edge contained while checking the blade's exact model and condition. Use the plant's accept/reject criteria; this guide supplies no chip limit, straightness tolerance, corrosion limit, minimum remaining dimension, edge test, service interval, or field-maintenance method. A missing tip or fragment triggers the plant's fragment-accountability process.
Inspect the qualified handle and retention system under their controlled criteria. Movement, altered components, damage, an unexplained shim, or an unapproved repair is a stop. Preserve the as-found state rather than tightening away evidence.
Install and set the blade only through the exact released instruction. Verify the required engagement, projection, component state, and retention check. Then stage the material, guide, and support exactly as the work instruction defines.
Make and inspect a first piece
The first piece proves the whole setup, not the blade alone. Use a non-production, sacrificial, setup, or explicitly authorized first piece when the control plan requires one.
Mark or otherwise establish the approved cut boundary by the controlled method.
Position and secure the material with the named support and restraint.
Place the approved guide or fixture in its defined location and verify it cannot move under the released method.
Take the released stance and grip. Keep the non-cutting hand and every body part outside the documented blade and release paths.
Execute the station's straightedge draw cut using its specified starting point, direction, blade presentation, pressure control, number of passes, and ending method. This guide does not supply substitutes for those values.
Bring the blade to the instruction's safe end state before moving the trim, guide, material, or inspection aid.
Separate and contain the removed strip by the approved method. Do not leave the blade embedded while pulling trim away.
Inspect the retained edge and adjacent material by the control plan. Record the result and inspect the blade assembly for movement or damage.
A visually straight edge, an easy stroke, or an operator's experience cannot waive a failed or missing inspection criterion.
Run production as repeated verified cycles
After first-piece release, repeat the same closed cycle:
identify → support → verify boundary → cut under the released instruction → safe the blade → contain trim → inspect at the specified frequency → read back assembly condition.
Stop on any change in identity, material state, guide position, support, cutting effort, blade condition, retention, edge result, or job record. Do not compensate by changing force, projection, passes, direction, material position, tension, pattern, or edge condition unless the released instruction authorizes it.
The Standard blades are described by Hyde as factory ground and honed; that is not a field-maintenance instruction.
Close the job and return the station to a known state
At completion, safe the assembly; account for the blade, handle, retention parts, trim, and fragments; segregate accepted, held, setup, and waste material; complete the final inspection; record assembly condition and disposition; clean only by the approved method; remove fixtures and waste through assigned routes; and hand back a traceable station with no loose edge, exposed assembly, or unidentified material.
Do not invent a solvent, oil, rust preventive, wash method, compressed-air cleanup, or storage treatment. A substance safe for the blade may contaminate the goods, attack a grip, alter a coating, or violate the next process.

Inspection, cleanup, and safety boundaries
Inspection follows the current control plan, which may name a drawing, sample, fixture, gauge, visual standard, or downstream check. This guide selects none and assigns no tolerance. Inspect retained goods, not only the removed strip, and preserve traceability.
Blade inspection is separate from product inspection. A conforming edge does not prove that the blade remained retained, and an intact blade does not prove that the goods meet their requirement. Record both outcomes. If an assembly is dropped, struck, altered, moved, or found with an unexplained condition, return it to HOLD.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 requires employers to select hand protection for the task and hazards. This guide specifies no glove material, cut level, cuff, or universal arrangement; a glove never authorizes edge contact or makes a hand a fixture.
Keep the blade path and material-release path free of people. Do not test sharpness with a finger, wipe toward the edge, catch falling trim with the off hand, carry an exposed loose blade, or place a blade in a pocket, mixed drawer, open tote, rag, or ordinary trash. Use the facility's approved contained transfer, storage, quarantine, and sharps routes.
Frequently asked questions
Which of the three blades makes the best edge?
No source proves a finish ranking. Models 62420 and 62450 share pattern 088 and listed dimensions but differ in steel; 62480 is Standard, pattern 2607, and one-half inch shorter. No other distinction is authorized.
Does HSS mean the 62450 can cut any synthetic roll good?
The queue routes 62450 to synthetic stock, but supplies no universal material list or process approval. The plant must qualify the exact work.
Can 62480 substitute for 62420 because both are 3/4 inch wide?
Not automatically. They differ in pattern and length. Substitution requires approved change control.
Which handle should I use?

History footnote
Manual trimming belongs to the same industrial lineage as cloth inspection and splicing: powered mills increased output, but short runs, inspection corrections, samples, and off-line edge work still required a controlled hand cut. The National Park Service's Slater Mill history places the first successful American water-powered cotton-spinning mill at Pawtucket in 1793. Hyde's Southbridge works later grew inside that New England manufacturing belt, making numbered blade patterns to factory demand.
