Put the tire in a safe state

The knife bench is for an uninflated, controlled casing separated from vehicle/rim/inflation hazards according to the repair process.

Do not cut:

a mounted/in-service tire;

a tire under pressure;

a casing on moving equipment;

inside a cure machine or spreader that can move unexpectedly;

while another person controls inflation/rotation;

through hidden rim hardware.

Knife preparation begins only after the relevant system has made the casing safe.

Powered spreaders/buffers require their own guarding and energy procedures.

The 61260 Taper Point Knife H2T has an accepted 4 × 11/16 × .065-inch blade.

Hyde’s exact use line is: sharp, thin blade to ream out ragged cuts in tire casings.

The taper widens from its point, which supports the working principle that deeper entry opens a wider path.

The record does not establish exact steel/hardness, sharpening angle, safe force, repair-zone eligibility, cut limit, or far-side clearance.

Read the K770 facts exactly

The 61350 Flexible Skiver Knife K770 has an accepted 4 × 13/16 × .042-inch blade, hardened high-carbon steel, and Hyde’s statement that its flexible blade is designed to cut rough spots in tire casings.

Its .042-inch blade is documented as flexible. The correct cut species is skiving:

blade near the surface;

thin pared layer;

flex following casing contour;

several controlled passes;

Keep four operations separate

Reaming: dressing the wall of an existing cut/opening with H2T.

Skiving/paring: shaving an approved rough surface with K770.

Buffing/texturing: powered or specified preparation controlled by the repair system, not performed by either knife automatically.

Trimming cured excess: separate post-cure finishing work, outside this exact graph.

Do not use “prepare” as a vague verb that lets one tool migrate into another operation.

Map the injury in three dimensions

Before knife contact, record the repair system’s measurements and observations:

length/width/depth;

approved final preparation boundary.

The visible hole is not necessarily the complete injury path.

Skive an authorized surface with K770

The K770 works nearly flat.

Mark the approved rough/proud region.

Support the curved casing surface.

Present the blade at a shallow shaving angle.

Draw a short thin pass.

The line documents present a useful two-geometry pairing: H2T dresses the internal ragged cut; K770 pares the surrounding surface.

The actual order and repetition depend on the certified repair system. Do not hard-code “ream then skive” where inspection, probing, buffing, cleaning, repair-unit fitting, or other operations intervene.

At each handoff record:

next authorized operation;

new hold trigger.

The tools can alternate only through controlled reinspection, never improvisation.

Keep chemistry out of the edge

Repair solvents, cleaners, cements, fills, and uncured/cured rubber products have exact instructions and SDS.

use a knife contaminated with unknown chemistry;

dip a wood-handled knife in solvent;

pare through wet cement unless the repair procedure explicitly says so;

transfer metal/rubber debris into a bonding surface;

use oil/protectant near a repair surface without compatibility.

Sequence cleaning and knife work to keep bonding surfaces controlled. A corrosion-protection product suitable for storage may be unacceptable in a repair zone.

Collect removed rubber separately from clean repair materials.

Select hand protection for cut/puncture, rubber handling, and chemical exposure without losing control under OSHA’s hand-protection standard. Use eye protection for chips/debris under OSHA’s eye and face standard.

Powered buffing/grinding and repair chemicals can add dust/fume exposure; follow the actual equipment/material SDS and exposure assessment. These two hand knives do not establish a respiratory control.

Inspect before repair material is applied

After knife work:

remove loose debris through the authorized method;

inspect interior/exterior;

repeat required measurements;

verify no prohibited component was cut;

compare with disposition;

update repair-unit/material selection;

document unexpected findings;

obtain the required approval.

Do not cover the prepared injury merely because the bench schedule is waiting.

Once cement/fill/repair unit is applied, evidence becomes harder to recover.

Hand off to the complete repair system

H2T needs a sound sharp taper; K770 needs a keen flexible shaving edge. Route maintenance through a qualified method that preserves physical geometry.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

A mounted/inflated tire reaches the knife bench. Stop and restore the rim-wheel/deflation procedure.

H2T is used to measure the hole. Reinspect with the specified gauges; its taper removes material.

The point is pried sideways. Stop, inspect for damage, and return to shallow perimeter dressing.

K770 is pushed down like a scraper. Lower the angle and take thin controlled shaves.

Flex leaves a permanent bend. Quarantine the blade.

A structural condition is cosmetically pared away. Hold and preserve evidence.

Knife debris contaminates cement. Stop, clean, and re-establish bonding-surface control.

A sharpening oil touches the repair zone. Apply the material compatibility/cleaning procedure.

The history footnote
