Do not begin with the tray.

Decide whether ladder work survives the site preflight
Choose access before the tray. From the ground, map surfaces, edges, openings, traffic, overhead objects, fixtures, conductors, and occupants. Define zones reachable from a valid stance without leaning, side-loading, exceeding standing limits, shifting while occupied, or losing the climbing handhold.
Reject the ladder method when:
a platform, scaffold, lift, pole-from-floor method, or other approved access provides better control;
the base cannot be stable and level or the ladder cannot be secured/stabilized as required;
paint, water, dust, protection, weather, or prior contamination can make the feet, rungs, steps, or floor slippery;
doors, passageways, driveways, occupants, other trades, or vehicles cannot be isolated;
the work zone requires leaning outside the ladder’s permitted body position or applying force that can displace it;
the full worker/equipment/material load exceeds or lacks the ladder’s actual permission;
a lower-level, opening, edge, stair, or dropped-object control is unsatisfied;
any energized or potentially energized part lies within the full movement envelope of the person, ladder, tray, roller, handle, pole, helper, or lowering route;
the coating requires controls that cannot be maintained at the elevated station;
rescue or spill response would require improvisation.
OSHA 1910.23 requires use as designed, shift inspection, maximum intended load control, stable placement, unoccupied relocation, traffic protection, facing the ladder, a climbing hand grasp, and no balance-risk carried load. OSHA 1926.1053 adds parallel construction controls, including slip-free surfaces, rated-load/intended-purpose limits, nonconductive side rails where exposed energized equipment may be contacted, and no use of a stepladder top or top step as a step.
These are floors, not a site plan. This guide prescribes no ladder type, geometry, stabilizer, fall equipment, spotter, or clearance; equipment, site, task, and jurisdiction decide.
Resolve electricity before equipment enters the zone
Treat electrical mapping as a stop gate, not an application tip. Before work, identify overhead service, branch wiring, fixtures, receptacles, panels, signs, temporary power, damaged devices, concealed circuits that preparation could expose, and any conductive object that can enter their zone.
OSHA 1926.416 requires a pre-work determination of exposed or concealed circuits that a person, tool, or machine could contact, plus communicated controls. OSHA 1910.333 treats an object without the applicable insulating rating as conductive for overhead-line work and requires nonconductive ladder side rails where exposed energized parts may be contacted.
A plastic tray does not electrically rate the complete assembly. Appearance proves no ladder rating; a wall switch does not verify de-energization. Wet material can enlarge exposure.
Inspect and dry-prove the complete system at ground level
Inspect the ladder and zone
Follow the ladder/site inspection. Remove any defective, contaminated, altered, incomplete, or unreadably labeled ladder from service. Clear and isolate both ends; protect the floor without hiding defects or destabilizing the base. Keep the service station outside traffic and drop zones.
Inspect 92054 and 92055
Confirm model identifiers. Reject 92054 or attachment components with cracks, distortion, chemical/dried-paint damage, missing hardware, or changed geometry; reject a split, punctured, deformed, or contaminated 92055. No tape, wire, clamp, screw, wedge, bent hook, drilled hole, counterweight, cord, or field-made retainer repairs failed fit.
Install only by the exact documented motion
Use the 92054 instructions verbatim to attach the empty tray to the exact authorized ladder interface. Use the 92055 instructions verbatim if the approved configuration permits the liner. This guide supplies no hook direction, rail, rung, shelf, side, slot, clip, bracket, locking motion, seating pressure, or fastener sequence.
Perform required retention/orientation checks dry at ground level. Add only the documented proof load by its documented method. Cycle the allowed configuration and dry roller path.
A dry pass proves only that recorded configuration; it creates no other fit, load, location, chemistry, attachment, or transport permission.
Prepare coating and tools at ground level
Reconcile coating, color, sheen, batch/lot, substrate, conditions, and coat. Prepare only under exact instructions; keep the labeled container and SDS available. “Plastic” proves no chemistry. Invent no cleaner, ventilation, ignition control, PPE, or disposal route.
Prove assembly, retention, free rotation, and the dry working path at hand level. A product title that mentions tray width does not prove a cover, frame, pole, or extension.
Do not pour to nominal capacity. Do not convert 2 L into an operating fill. Preserve displacement and movement headroom according to the exact instructions and loaded proof. If no working fill or load method is documented, the ladder-tray method remains on hold.
Establish hands-free climbing under the ladder and site rules. No person climbs carrying an open tray, paint container, liner, roller, or other balance-risk load. If the approved system requires raising or installing any component after the ladder is positioned, use only the documented method; this guide invents no hand-up, hoist, rope, tether, hook, or helper transfer.
Run the climb–apply–descend loop
Climb to a proved station
Face the ladder, use the required hand grasp, and climb within the ladder instructions. Confirm the ladder, tray, liner, drop zone, electrical boundary, and work face look exactly as proved before touching the coating system. If anything moved, lowered, loosened, leaked, or entered the zone, descend and reset from the ground.
Apply only after the loaded proof passes
Load and meter the roller qualitatively under the approved coating/roller/tray system:
introduce coating through the documented tray path;
let the cover rotate rather than skid;
build an even charge across its usable width and circumference;
meter free excess without crushing the cover;
pause over the tray and confirm no free stream or uncontrolled repeated drop;
make a short representative pass inside the approved zone;
read coverage, rotation, drip state, tray/liner movement, ladder stability, and operator control.
No universal fill fraction, dip depth, pass count, loading rate, pressure, stroke length, working radius, reach, or refill interval transfers into this method. Technique becomes permissible only after proof, and remains qualitative. Work in short sections owned by one valid stance. Reposition the ladder instead of stretching for the last area. Keep movements smooth; stop if the roller, tray, liner, ladder, or worker response changes.
Do not hand-hold or knee-brace the tray, add a container/tool, improvise a roller rest, or use a pole that changes the envelope. Do not work above a person. PPE does not authorize dripping, unstable access, or electrical uncertainty.
Stop and descend before service
Descend before a refill, color change, liner service, tray adjustment, ladder adjustment, spill cleanup, coating correction, roller change, electrical-state change, or relocation. A “quick fix” at height is still an unproved configuration. If the approved instructions do not provide a controlled way to make the station safe for descent, the method should never have passed preflight.
Relocation is a full reset, not a reach extension
Finish the bounded zone and close the wet edge as the coating permits. Put the coating station into the exact documented relocation state. Remove, empty, close, lower, or retain components only as the tray, liner, coating, ladder, and site instructions jointly allow. Never move, shift, close, extend, or drag an occupied ladder.
Descend, isolate the wet area, and inspect the ladder, tray interface, liner, roller, protection, and floor. Treat any drip as a slip/fit event. Move the unoccupied ladder by its instructions, remap hazards, repeat both proof gates, and register the new stance.
Use 92067 only as a separately approved ground station on a stable protected surface, never as ladder hardware. Its nominal 4 L identity does not authorize full fill, loaded carrying, perching, elevated staging, a roller width, a coating, or a cleaner. If it supplies coating to this job, the transfer route must keep the climber and open material inside their independently approved methods.

The response must be decided before ascent. This guide supplies no universal absorbent, neutralizer, solvent, rinse, electrical rescue technique, first-aid procedure, or waste classification.
Cleanup, closeout, and service register
Close and route remaining coating under its label/TDS/SDS and site/local rules. Do not return roller-exposed material to a source container unless the coating maker explicitly permits it. Do not pour paint, solvent, or wash material into a drain, onto the ground, or into a storm system by assumption; EPA directs household users to state/local programs, and commercial waste follows the applicable generator rules.
Detach 92054 and remove 92055 only by their exact instructions at a protected ground station. No generic “peel,” “scrape,” “wash,” “wipe,” “solvent,” or reuse method is authorized here. Dry and inspect the ladder separately; coating in an interface, rung, step, foot, lock, or label can change safe use.
