Job: repaint an existing orange-peel or knockdown wall so its peaks, shoulders, and recesses receive a continuous, visually even coating without sanding away, filling in, or otherwise redesigning the texture.

Scope boundary: this guide starts with texture already on the wall. It does not explain how to spray orange peel, flatten wet spatter into knockdown, stamp texture, or match a missing texture field. Those are material-forming operations with different tools, recipes, readiness states, and hazards.

Difficulty: diagnosis and continuity. Rolling is familiar; proving that the texture is sound, choosing an admitted coating/applicator system, and seeing missed recesses before the film locks are the work.

The registered set contains no frame, tray, brush, cleaner, primer, patch compound, PPE, or coating. Use a frame whose fit is explicitly verified for the selected cover; do not infer core diameter or frame fit from width alone. Everything else comes from the selected systems: current coating label, technical data sheet and safety data sheet; manufacturer-approved primer if required; compatible repair and cleaning products; an admitted cut-in brush; tray or bucket/grid system; protection and containment; representative test area; revealing lights; access equipment; and controls selected for the actual occupants and hazards.
Diagnose the wall before choosing a cover
Identify the profile without renaming the job
Orange peel normally presents rounded, separate high spots with shallow cups between them. Knockdown normally presents flattened mesas or islands with shoulders and connected low channels. Those visual names are useful for recording the wall, not for choosing a nap by folklore. Texture labeled “light,” “medium,” or “heavy” is not a measurement, and two rooms called knockdown can have very different relief, hardness, and porosity.
Inspect in normal room light and with a portable light aimed across the wall from more than one direction. Record peak relief, valley continuity, friable edges, repairs, earlier roller stipple, and any softened profile. Photograph a representative field, cut-in edge, repair, and the wall under its harshest everyday light. The goal is a reproducible witness, not an invented texture class.
Do not “improve” an intact profile by sanding it flatter. Sanding changes the job from repainting to texture alteration and may disturb hazardous old coatings or compounds. If the owner wants a smoother wall, stop this guide and specify a texture-removal or skim-coat system.
Prove soundness layer by layer
The visible coating, the texture material, the joint treatment beneath it, and the wallboard or plaster are separate layers. A finish coat can look sound while the texture releases from the substrate. Check representative peaks, valleys, old patches, damp-history areas, exterior-wall corners, and cut-in bands for powdering, flexing, hollow release, blisters, cracking, edge lift, or transfer to a clean hand or cloth.
Any texture that crushes, powders, peels, softens with the proposed cleaner, or releases during the coating mock-up is not ready to roll. Stop and identify the failed layer. Painting over a weak layer makes the new film a stronger handle for pulling the old system off.
Read porosity as a coating-system question
Compare intact painted texture, exposed texture at a chip, fresh repair texture, joint compound, and any bare wallboard paper. Uneven darkening or rapid absorption during a manufacturer-authorized spot test can reveal different suction, but it does not name a primer. The coating maker must decide whether the surfaces require sealing, spot treatment, or a uniform preparatory coat. A universal “prime every textured wall” rule is as unsound as a universal “paint and primer in one is enough” rule.
Map every porous repair because a patch can disappear in color while flashing in sheen. The accepted test must include both old coated texture and every new repair material that will remain in the finished field.
Identify the prior coating and adhesion risk
Record what is known about the existing coating: product if retained records exist, sheen, approximate age, number of visible layers, chalking, grease exposure, household-cleaner residue, and whether it resists the proposed cleaning method. Do not identify latex, alkyd, elastomeric, or another chemistry from appearance alone. Gloss, hardness, or a solvent response is a lead for a coating professional, not an improvised identification recipe.
When prior chemistry is unknown or the new product has a compatibility limitation, prepare and coat an inconspicuous representative area through the complete proposed schedule. Let the selected manufacturer define preparation, primer, film application, drying, recoat, and adhesion evaluation. Wrinkling, lifting, crawling, fisheyes, softening, or loss of adhesion blocks the field application.
Separate repairs from texture application
Repair movement cracks, leaks, loose fasteners, damaged wallboard, and failed patches before painting. The repair system must be compatible with the actual substrate and must reach its manufacturer-defined readiness before coating. A smooth patch in a textured wall is not finished merely because it is flat: its profile has to be matched through a separately specified texture-repair method, cured, and accepted under the same revealing light.
Do not use the roller or finish paint to manufacture missing orange peel or knockdown. Loading a crater with extra paint changes film build, not the underlying texture, and can leave a glossy island, sag, or future soft spot.
Resolve contamination and moisture
Dust settles on texture faces; kitchen aerosol, hand soil, smoke, cleaners, and HVAC deposits can occupy the recesses. Identify the contaminant and use only a cleaning and closure method admitted by the new coating manufacturer. A clean-looking peak does not prove a clean valley. Inspect again in cross-light and reach the coating system's required dryness.
Water staining, active leakage, elevated moisture, efflorescence, and mold are stop conditions until the source and affected assembly are resolved. EPA's mold guidance says moisture control comes first and warns against painting moldy surfaces. Coating is not remediation.
Clear the occupied-space and legacy-material gates
Lead, asbestos, and dust-producing preparation
In pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities, preparation that disturbs painted surfaces may fall under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting program. Determine applicability before scraping, sanding, drilling, cutting out repairs, or abrading glossy peaks. Use the current EPA or authorized state/Tribal program; a generic paint guide cannot declare an exemption.
Older texture and patching systems can also contain asbestos. Appearance cannot clear the material. If the age or record makes the texture suspect and the work could abrade, cut, scrape, sand, or otherwise disturb it, stop for evaluation by a properly trained and accredited asbestos professional. Painting an intact wall is not permission to perform destructive preparation on an unknown texture.
Occupants, ventilation, ignition, and building systems
Inventory children, pregnant occupants, people with asthma or chemical sensitivity, pets, food, medications, aquariums, and adjacent occupied rooms. Read the selected coating, cleaner, patch, primer, and caulk SDSs together. Their hazard statements and the site's exposure assessment determine who leaves, what ventilation is required, what PPE is appropriate, whether ignition sources must be controlled, and when the room may be reoccupied. “Low odor” or a marketing VOC phrase is not an exposure plan.
Plan air movement so it does not carry dust, vapor, or odor into occupied zones or return ducts. Isolate or protect receptacles and fixtures through qualified procedures; do not paint energized devices or fill texture around a box with wet coating. Provide rated access equipment and a clear body path. A roller pole does not make improvised furniture or an unguarded stair landing safe.
Contain furnishings and floors before opening paint. Preserve access to exits and emergency equipment.
Let one coating manufacturer own the recipe
Build a job card from the current label, technical data sheet, and safety data sheet for the exact product and color/base.
admitted substrates and prior-coating limitations;
required surface condition and cleaning;
whether and where a primer or sealer is required;
permitted brush and roller-cover types, materials, nap range, and application methods;
mixing and any allowed thinning;
spreading or film-build requirements;
environmental limits during application and drying;
dry, recoat, cure, and reoccupancy requirements;
ventilation, PPE, ignition, and first-aid instructions; and
tool cleanup, storage, spill, and disposal instructions.
Blank or generic manufacturer language stays blank; it is not filled from another brand. Neither source authorizes transfer to an unnamed paint.
Estimate material from that product's stated spread or film-build requirement and the observed wall, then provide contingency for the mock-up's demonstrated consumption. This guide supplies no universal spread rate and no “textured walls use X percent more” multiplier.
Prove the cover, cut-in, and finish on a representative mock-up
Choose candidates from the six-row table only after the coating documents have defined acceptable cover material and nap. A candidate whose verified facts do not fit those instructions is out. When several remain, test them rather than assigning orange peel or knockdown to a nap from a generic ladder. Model 47365 cannot satisfy a material requirement until its exact material is verified.
Use a wall area or test panel that reproduces the actual profile, prior coating, repairs, cleaning, primer, room conditions, frame, cover, brush, and finish system. A smooth scrap board proves nothing about valley closure. Carry the mock-up through the complete coat schedule and manufacturer-defined evaluation state.
Approve the combination only when:
peaks retain their shape and edges;
recesses show no holidays or pinholes under cross-light;
no texture releases, softens, tears, or transfers;
cut-in and rolled fields join without a visible frame;
the dry sheen and color read uniformly from normal viewing positions;
no fibers, ridges, foam, bubbles, sags, or edge beads remain; and
the result meets the coating maker's adhesion and film requirements.
Record the exact model, frame, loading station, coating, lot, preparation, room conditions, cut-in method, section size, distribution motion, inspection lighting, and accepted result. Technique may now follow that witness; it still does not become a universal product claim.
Cut in and roll without burying the texture
Stage the wall as one continuous field
Plan natural stopping points at inside corners, doors, or other full boundaries. Size each working section so brushing, rolling, cross-direction distribution, and inspection can all occur within the coating's usable wet state under the actual conditions. Hot walls, moving air, high relief, porous repairs, and a slow cut-in can shorten that state; only the product instructions and mock-up can define it.
Cut in a bounded edge section, then bring the roller field into it while the test-proved interface remains workable. The brush must deliver coating into the profile without leaving a smooth, overbuilt band across the peaks. Feather the brush work toward the field and use the accepted roller overlap to reproduce the field texture at the join. Do not cut the entire room first when the mock-up shows a dry brush band will picture-frame.
Load the cover uniformly
Condition a new cover only as its product and the selected coating permit. Load through the approved tray, screen, or grid until the cover is wet across its full width and circumference, then remove uncontrolled excess by the proved station method. This guide does not prescribe a dip fraction, number of grid strokes, pre-wetting liquid, or cover preparation ritual.
Start the load in an uncoated part of the active section, not on the finished edge. Distribute it across the texture before extending the field. Reload when the mock-up's visual and sound cues show release falling off; do not compensate for a starved cover by increasing force.
Use cross-direction coverage as an inspection method
Relief can shadow one travel direction: a pass may coat the approach side of a mesa and bridge the lee side. While the film remains within the proved working state, distribute from a crossing direction so the second approach exposes recesses the first motion did not reach. “Cross-direction” is not a mandatory letter pattern, pass count, pressure, or final orientation. It is the qualitative act of approaching the profile from another direction and watching whether the wet film closes around shoulders and into channels.
After distribution, use the mock-up's accepted finishing motion to leave one coherent field. Do not keep rolling merely because the wall is textured. Repeated contact can build peaks, pull a weak texture, create lap ridges, or disturb a film that has begun to set. The minimum contact that reproduces the accepted witness is the correct amount; this guide supplies no pressure value.
Inspect while recovery is still possible
View each section straight on and with light raking from both sides. Change your eye height. Look particularly beneath flattened knockdown shoulders, beside repairs, at cut-in joins, and where a reload began. A wet shine can hide a thin recess, so repeat inspection at the coating maker's defined dry state before accepting the wall.
Do not confuse a deliberate texture shadow with a holiday. A holiday changes as the light moves because substrate or prior color remains exposed; a sound recess retains the coating even though the relief still casts a shadow. The approved mock-up is the comparison.
What goes wrong — and controlled recovery
Lap or picture-frame line: a section edge or brush band advanced beyond its workable state, or film build changed at the join. Stop spot-working the setting film. Follow the coating maker's recovery and recoat rules; the durable correction may require a complete boundary-to-boundary coat rather than a local stripe.
Holiday in a recess: loading, distribution, or approach failed to close the profile. If the product and mock-up still admit wet rework, integrate the defect from a crossing direction without overbuilding the peaks. Otherwise mark it, let the film reach the required state, and recover through the authorized recoat route.
Persistent pinholes: decide whether they are unfilled texture recesses, porous repair suction, bubbles, contamination, or a coating defect. More force is not diagnosis.
Texture tears, rolls up, or flattens: stop immediately. The texture is unsound, softened, overworked, or incompatible with the cleaner/coating/tool. Remove the wall from production and diagnose the failed layer; do not roll the fragments back into place.
Ridges or beads remain on peaks: loading or section distribution is uneven. Recover only while the approved wet method permits it. A cured ridge is a preparation defect for the next authorized coat, not something to bury with more paint.
Fibers appear in the film: stop and inspect cover condition, surface abrasion, and product compatibility. Remove loose material only through a method the wet coating permits.
Repair flashes after drying: the repair and old field have different suction, profile, or film build. Brushing a small shiny patch into the finish usually compounds the mismatch.
Cleanup, acceptance, and handoff
At every pause, close and label coating containers and protect the active edge only as the product allows. Clean the cover, frame, brush, tray, and spill equipment with the exact chemistry and timing on the coating label/SDS. Do not assume water, soap, mineral spirits, or another solvent.
A cover is reusable only if the coating and cover instructions permit cleaning and the dried inspection finds no retained coating, matting, fiber damage, flat spot, loose core, contamination, or corrosion transfer from the frame. Store paint with product, color, sheen, lot, room, and date identified. Restore plates, fixtures, HVAC, detectors, furniture, and occupancy only after the controlling cure/reoccupancy and building-system requirements are met.
Accept the wall twice: under cross-light for recess closure and under normal occupied lighting for color, sheen, cut-in interface, and texture preservation. Record unresolved defects before furniture returns.
Is this a guide to creating orange peel or knockdown?
It paints an existing, accepted texture. Spraying spatter, knocking wet texture flat, stamping, or matching a repaired profile belongs to the separate texture-application guides linked at the top.
Which nap should I use for orange peel?
There is no universal answer in this guide. The six registered products expose verified 1/2-, 5/8-, and 3/4-inch facts, but texture names do not prove compatibility. Use the exact coating manufacturer's applicator requirements and an actual-profile mock-up.
Can I choose 47365 because Lamb Pro means polyester?
Not from its exact record.
Do I always need primer on a textured repaint?
No universal ruling is defensible. Bare repair material, uneven porosity, staining, unknown prior coating, or an adhesion problem may create a primer requirement, but the selected coating/primer manufacturer owns that decision.
How hard should I press or how many passes should I make?
This guide supplies neither a pressure nor a pass count. Use the least contact that reproduces the accepted mock-up while closing recesses and preserving peaks. A setting film or moving texture is a stop signal.
Why do holidays appear only at night?
Raking light exposes recesses that frontal daylight hides. Inspect from more than one direction during the accepted wet state and again after the manufacturer-defined drying stage.
Can I paint over a loose or powdery texture to bind it?
Not without a manufacturer-approved stabilization system and proof. A new film over a weak layer can pull the texture off as a sheet. Diagnose the failing layer first.
What controls dry time, recoat time, thinning, PPE, and cleanup?
The current label, technical data sheet, and safety data sheet for the exact coating and associated products. None of those values or chemistries is universal.
History footnote
USG's current texture literature still treats texture as a distinct finish operation using spray equipment, brushes, rollers, floats, trowels, and knives, and describes texture as a way to alter light and mask minor surface variation. Once that relief has cured and been coated, repainting becomes a preservation problem: the roller is applying a film over the pattern, not creating the pattern itself.
