This guide invents none of those values and states no price or availability.
Job: select an adhesive that is approved for the exact assembly and both substrates; prove that its rigid cartridge, condition, and dispensing load suit the selected Hyde gun; prepare and dry-fit the work; place only the manufacturer-specified adhesive pattern; close, fasten, clamp, brace, or weight the assembly as its documents require; protect the bond through cure; and read back the completed assembly before it carries load or receives the next trade.
Time: the gun can place a bead quickly. The job clock cannot be generalized. Surface conditioning, primer, open time, repositioning window, required support, handling readiness, traffic or load return, water exposure, and full cure vary by exact adhesive, bead geometry, substrate porosity, temperature, humidity, and assembly. Build the schedule from the current TDS and assembly instructions before opening a cartridge.
Difficulty: moderate when the assembly is simple and fully specified; high when the bond is structural, overhead, exterior, fire-rated, moisture-sensitive, finish-critical, or between dissimilar/nonporous materials. The trigger work is easy. The consequences live in product selection, load path, surface preparation, timing, fastening, and support.

Stop before the gun: decide whether adhesive is allowed to carry this job
1.1 Construction adhesive is a product class, not an approval
“Construction adhesive” can describe water-based latex, solvent-bearing rubber/resin, polyurethane, silane-modified or other hybrid chemistry, and application-specific formulas for subfloor, foamboard, panels, tub surrounds, mirrors, masonry, landscape block, trim, or general remodeling. Similar cartridges can have opposite substrate permissions, different cure mechanisms, and different fire, vapor, moisture, temperature, support, and cleanup rules.
The front label narrows the search; it does not complete the specification. Admit an adhesive only when the exact current technical documents accept:
both substrates, including their coatings, treatments, backing films, and moisture condition;
the interior, exterior, wet, dry, freeze-thaw, heat, sunlight, or chemical exposure;
the assembly orientation—horizontal, vertical, overhead, or traffic-bearing;
the required movement, gap-filling, rigidity, finish, and service condition;
the project’s permanent fasteners, support, and load path;
the cartridge format and manual applicator;
the site’s air, substrate, and material conditions through the required cure period.
If one material maker approves the bond and the other forbids it, the assembly is not approved. Do not average incompatible instructions.
1.2 Adhesive does not silently replace fasteners
Treat mechanical fastening and temporary support as separate design questions:
Permanent fasteners carry the assembly exactly as its drawings, code path, evaluation report, and component instructions require.
Temporary support holds position and contact while the adhesive develops the state required by its TDS.
The adhesive contributes only the function the complete approved assembly assigns to it.
Do not omit, reduce, resize, relocate, or delay nails, screws, anchors, clips, blocking, hangers, ledgers, or brackets because a cartridge says “heavy duty,” “instant grab,” “strong,” or “structural.” DAP’s own construction-adhesive guidance warns that instant grab is not the same thing as cured strength or cure speed and directs users back to the exact technical data (DAP — Construction Adhesive MAX Strength). That distinction is universal; any numerical claim on that product page remains exact-product evidence, not a value transferred here.
Stop and obtain the responsible designer’s or system manufacturer’s written direction for:
beams, posts, trusses, joists, rafters, structural sheathing, diaphragms, stairs, rails, guards, decks, and load-bearing framing;
overhead panels, ceiling features, suspended work, or any assembly whose fall could injure someone;
stone, glass, mirror, façade, precast, curtain-wall, or cladding systems;
fire-resistance, smoke, air, water, acoustical, sanitary, or rated penetrations and joints;
anchoring threaded rod, rebar, equipment, safety barriers, or fixtures into concrete or masonry;
submerged, food-contact, potable-water, high-heat, chemical, or vehicle-traffic service.
A one-component construction-adhesive bead from one of these guns is not a firestop system, chemical anchor, glazing system, or engineering decision.
1.3 Separate the four kinds of “hold”
Before work begins, label every hold in the assembly:
Handling hold: enough initial grip to keep a piece from sliding while it is positioned.
Temporary cure support: clamp, brace, weight, prop, ledger, tape, or fastener maintained for the interval and condition the adhesive maker requires.
Permanent mechanical attachment: the specified fasteners or hardware that remain after cure.
Service bond: the cured adhesive contribution permitted by the approved assembly.
These are not interchangeable milestones. “It stayed when I let go” proves only immediate handling behavior. It does not prove full contact, cured strength, load capacity, weather resistance, or permission to remove support.
2.1 Read in this order
Put one current packet at the work area:
project drawings, specifications, code path, evaluation report, or engineered repair;
installation instructions for the panel, subfloor, trim, mirror, foam, tub surround, block, fixture, or other component;
instructions for the receiving substrate or framing system;
exact adhesive label and regional TDS;
exact adhesive SDS;
primer, cleaner, compatibility, mock-up, and field-test instructions from the adhesive maker;
permanent fastener and support instructions;
employer hazard-communication, respiratory-protection, fire, waste, lifting, access, and emergency procedures where the work is occupational.
The TDS answers whether and how the product works: approved uses and exclusions, substrates, surface preparation, primer, application conditions, bead or pattern, coverage, open time, repositioning, support, cleanup, readiness, and cure. The SDS answers how to control the chemical hazards: identification and restrictions, hazard statements, first aid, fire response, spill control, handling and storage, exposure controls, PPE, stability, and disposal. OSHA’s required SDS structure makes Sections 5, 7, and 8 the direct fire, handling/storage, and exposure/PPE checkpoints, but the entire current SDS remains part of the job (OSHA — SDS required information, OSHA — Safety Data Sheets brief).
2.2 Record the exact clocks without turning them into folklore
Create a one-page job card from the exact documents:
product and variant;
lot/date code and shelf-life status;
allowed storage, material, air, and substrate conditions;
required surface state and primer;
approved substrates and prohibited materials;
bead/pattern and stated coverage method;
open time or placement deadline;
repositioning limit, if any;
clamp, brace, weight, fastener, or support requirement;
handling, traffic, load, water, paint, and full-cure milestones;
cleanup method while uncured and after cure;
PPE, ventilation, ignition, spill, first-aid, and waste controls.
If a document does not provide a value, mark it unresolved and ask the adhesive or assembly manufacturer. Do not fill a blank with another formula’s data or a crew memory.
2.3 Stop on stale or irreconcilable documents
Do not open material when:
the product identity, label, lot/date code, or instructions cannot be read;
the current TDS or workplace-required SDS cannot be obtained;
a substrate or component maker rejects the adhesive;
one document requires porosity, moisture, primer, fasteners, or support that the assembly cannot provide;
the job requires a dual-component ratio, static mixer, powered dispenser, sausage gun, bulk gun, or named applicator that this union does not supply;
environmental conditions cannot remain inside the product’s stated limits through the required work and cure window.
Match adhesive to the assembly and both substrates
3.1 Subfloor and wood structural panels
A glued floor is an assembly, not a bead laid on any framing member. Start with the panel grade/span instructions, joist or I-joist manufacturer, project fastening schedule, and approved adhesive specification. The APA Engineered Wood Association directs builders to clean level framing, select a qualified adhesive for a glued floor, lay panels and fasten them by the applicable schedule; it also separately warns against gluing plywood underlayment to a subfloor in some finish-floor assemblies (APA — Construct a Solid, Squeak-Free Floor System, APA — Builder Tips).
That contrast is the point: “wood panel over wood” does not identify one adhesive method.
whether adhesive is required, optional, or prohibited;
adhesive qualification or named products;
which framing face receives it;
panel orientation, edge spacing, and placement sequence;
fastener type, length, schedule, edge distance, and driving method;
whether wet, frozen, treated, engineered, or preservative-treated wood is admitted;
how much framing can be coated before the panel-placement clock expires;
when construction traffic and following trades may load the floor.
Do not stand or kneel on an unsupported panel edge while placing it. Stage panels and fasteners so a placed sheet can be seated and fastened immediately by the approved sequence rather than walked loose while someone searches for a tool.
3.2 Drywall, wall panels, and decorative sheet goods
Dry-fit the complete panel before adhesive is present. Mark studs, blocking, fastener zones, seams, cutouts, utilities, and required movement clearances. Confirm that the panel and substrate instructions accept the same adhesive and that the cure mechanism works with the two surfaces. Some water-based products require at least one porous surface; some solvent-bearing products can attack a face, backing, finish, or enclosed cavity; some hybrids accept nonporous pairs only under specific conditions.
Decide the support plan before placement:
permanent fasteners and their schedule;
bottom ledger or setting blocks;
braces or props that cannot bow or dent the face;
joint spacing and edge support;
safe panel-lifting method and crew size;
order for outlets, plumbing, access panels, and trim.
Never use a vertical panel as a brace for the panel beside it. Never seal a wall cavity, drainage route, or service access the component maker requires to remain open.
3.3 Trim, molding, cleats, blocking, and finish work
Finish bonds fail visibly. Check the back of the trim and the receiving face for factory coatings, wax, oil, dust, release agent, old adhesive, weak paint, and moisture. Confirm that the selected formula:
bonds both materials;
does not stain through porous or light-colored trim;
can be painted or finished as planned;
accommodates or intentionally restrains expected movement;
permits the specified nails, pins, screws, or hidden clips;
will not squeeze into a reveal, door/window operating clearance, expansion gap, or finish edge.
Pre-cut miters, copes, returns, and scarf joints. Dry-fit the entire local assembly and number the pieces. Temporary pins or finish nails may be positioning devices or permanent fasteners depending on the approved detail; this page does not decide which. A piece that springs away during dry fit needs corrected stock, fit, fastening, or support—not a larger wet bead asked to bend it flat.
3.4 Foamboard and plastics
An incompatible adhesive can dissolve, craze, soften, or burn through foam and plastic. Use a formula whose exact TDS names the specific foam or polymer and the receiving substrate. DAP’s foamboard product documentation, for example, makes no-etch/no-burn-through compatibility a product-specific claim rather than a generic construction-adhesive trait (DAP — Foamboard Construction Adhesive).
Identify EPS, XPS, polyisocyanurate, PVC, ABS, acrylic, fiberglass, polyethylene, polypropylene, fluoropolymer, composite, or another actual material; “plastic” is not enough. Check facers, films, fire barriers, mechanical attachment, drainage, vapor control, and thermal-expansion requirements. Make the manufacturer’s prescribed compatibility test before production. Do not trap a solvent or water-based product between two faces that cannot release what its cure requires.
3.5 Mirrors, stone, tile, metal, and other finish-critical materials
Use a mirror adhesive explicitly approved by the mirror maker. Ordinary adhesive or the wrong cleaner can attack reflective backing, create black edges, telegraph beads, or pull coating from glass. Mirror support and permanent retention come from the mirror system—not the cartridge’s apparent grab.
Stone, marble, granite, and porous tile can stain, shadow, or absorb oils. Metal can carry mill oil, galvanizing treatments, oxidation, factory coatings, or thermal movement. Confirm the exact adhesive, cleaner, primer, bead orientation, support, and test method with both makers. A hidden mock-up must reach the manufacturer’s evaluation point before a visible or valuable assembly is committed.
Do not use this general workflow for structural glazing, overhead stone, façade panels, or safety mirrors without their complete engineered system.
3.6 Concrete, masonry, and landscape units
Sound, prepared masonry is different from dusting, spalled, sealed, painted, wet, salt-contaminated, or uncured masonry. Confirm substrate age/condition, moisture, temperature, cleaning, primer, gap limits, drainage, and service exposure in the exact product documents. Landscape caps and non-load-bearing units are not permission to bond retaining-wall structure, stair guards, coping subject to code attachment, or traffic-bearing work by analogy.
Cracked or moving masonry, failed mortar, settlement, and displaced units require repair of the cause. Adhesive can bond two unsound surfaces together and still leave an unsound assembly.
Chemistry changes the workflow, hazards, and cure

No chemistry family supplies a universal bead, coverage, open time, support interval, cure, strength, or weather limit. Choose the formula, then inherit only that formula’s data.
Choose and prove the Hyde gun without inventing thrust
5.1 Format is the first gate
46435, 46482, 46484: claimed for all 9" cartridges. Use the exact intended standard-class rigid cartridge for the fit test.
46420: claimed for all 13" cartridges in the 32 oz. class.
All four: rigid cartridge guns. None is claimed here for foil sausages, bulk loading, or dual-component ratio cartridges.
Confirm that the approved adhesive is actually manufactured and supplied in the chosen format. The 46420’s larger format creates no benefit if the specified formula is available only in a standard cartridge.
5.2 Choose the stop behavior as deliberately as the cartridge
46435 and 46482 — quick-release friction family. Use the claimed thumb lever to dump pressure before lifting from every joist, panel, block, or trim piece. This is an operator action, not a StopDrip claim. If the drive slips, stop; do not squeeze harder to prove it.
46484 — ratchet. The pawl’s positive advance suits repeated stiff-material strokes, but stored pressure remains until the actual rod release is operated. Learn that release on the empty physical gun before loading. Release while the nozzle is still over the intended bead or containment.
46420 — StopDrip ratchet. Hyde claims that StopDrip prevents excess material from oozing after trigger release. Test that effect with the exact adhesive over scrap before approaching work. The effect does not establish thrust, remove the need to control the gun, or authorize a material outside the gun or adhesive instructions.
5.3 Run three different tests—and do not confuse their results
Receiving and fit test, unopened cartridge:
verify exact gun model and cartridge class;
inspect frame, rod, thrust plate, trigger, release, cutter, punch, and claimed hook;
seat the unopened cartridge without shims or pressure;
confirm square thrust-plate contact and nozzle clearance;
retract and remove without binding.
Controlled extrusion test, opened cartridge over containment:
condition, open, puncture, and load exactly as the product instructions require;
advance with normal controlled strokes;
watch for rod slip, cartridge buckling, rear leakage, pulsing, frame movement, or unreasonable hand load;
perform the model-specific release before lifting;
confirm output stops in a controlled, understood way.
Bond mock-up, representative substrates:
prepare both sample materials by the production method;
apply the exact specified pattern;
close, support, fasten, and cure under representative conditions;
evaluate only by the adhesive/assembly maker’s stated test and acceptance point.
Fit proves package compatibility. Extrusion proves controllable delivery. A mock-up probes substrate and process compatibility. None alone proves structural capacity or the finished assembly.
5.4 Thrust remains an open buying fact
Do not label one “high thrust,” state a force multiplier, rank maximum viscosity, or promise daily cold-adhesive duty. Some adhesive TDSs recommend a high-thrust applicator for easier gunning; that requirement exposes the missing Hyde number rather than resolving it.
For regular stiff-material production:
identify the exact adhesive and permitted conditioning range;
ask Hyde to confirm applicator suitability for that product;
ask the adhesive maker whether manual application and the proposed gun class are acceptable;
prove a normal-condition cartridge at production pace;
reject a setup that slips, deforms packaging, requires excessive force, or cannot stop cleanly.
Do not heat a cartridge with flame, heater, hot water, oven, microwave, or uncontrolled sun. Condition it only by its manufacturer’s approved storage/application method.
Plan the assembly before material is open
6.1 Survey load, support, access, and following work
Draw or mark:
every bonded face and substrate transition;
permanent fasteners and hardware;
temporary clamps, braces, weights, props, ledgers, and removal access;
panel or part sequence;
openings, utilities, drainage paths, movement gaps, weeps, and service clearances;
safe lifting and access path;
fall/drop zone for elevated work;
weather cover and ventilation path;
where squeeze-out can escape and how it will be removed;
where work must stop so every wet bead is closed inside its product’s open time.
The support must be installable before it is needed and removable after the documented release point without prying against the fresh assembly. A brace that blocks the next fastener or traps the worker behind a panel is not a plan.
6.2 Dry-fit every piece
Cut, scribe, drill, rout, cope, shim, and test the work dry.
parts sit naturally without adhesive being asked to fill a design error;
both bond faces make the contact the assembly requires;
joints, reveals, edges, fastener zones, and operating clearances are correct;
warped, wet, damaged, contaminated, or mis-sized parts are replaced or corrected;
the crew can move from bead placement to closure and fastening inside the exact open-time window;
support and fasteners are within reach and already adjusted.
Do not use cartridge pressure as a substitute for fitting.
Use the adhesive maker’s stated bead/pattern and coverage method, the measured run/field, and an allowance for manufacturer-recognized waste, starts, and test material. Do not estimate cartridges from a remembered bead diameter or from the gun capacity alone.
Stage enough same approved product to complete each logical assembly without an unplanned formula change. Verify lot/date information and the maker’s rules for mixing lots or colors where appearance matters. A mid-panel substitution to “something equivalent” is a specification change, not a convenience.
6.4 Establish the open-time production rhythm
Work backward from the exact placement deadline:
amount of bead one operator can place controllably;
time required to lift and align the part;
time required to press/seat it;
time required to install permanent fasteners;
time required to install temporary support and inspect squeeze-out.
Coat only the area the crew can close in that sequence. Do not lay adhesive across an entire room of joists, a stack of wall panels, or a run of blocks because the gun makes it easy. A skinned bead can look present and contribute little or no bond.
Admit the site: PPE, fire, weather, access, and substrate condition
7.1 Build chemical controls from the exact SDS
read hazard identification, first aid, fire response, accidental release, handling/storage, exposure controls/PPE, stability, and disposal;
provide the exact glove material and eye/face protection specified;
establish natural ventilation or local exhaust as required;
determine whether respiratory protection is needed through the employer’s exposure assessment and compliant respiratory program—not by buying an odor mask;
remove ignition sources where the product, primer, or cleaner is flammable;
stage spill containment, compatible wipes/cleaner, and waste containers;
keep food, drink, smoking, occupants, children, pets, and unprotected workers outside the controlled area.
Do not use solvent to clean skin. Do not rely on odor as an exposure meter. Do not mix cleaners, primers, or adhesive residues. Do not return a contaminated puncture tool to the frame until it is cleaned by the allowed method.
OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard requires workplace labels, accessible SDSs, and training for hazardous chemicals; chemical-specific information remains available through the exact label and SDS (29 CFR 1910.1200). The compliance duty does not make every adhesive equally hazardous. It is the reason this generic guide refuses to assign generic gloves, respirators, or fire controls.
7.2 Fire control belongs before cartridge opening
For a flammable product or cleaner:
eliminate flames, smoking, hot work, pilot lights, sparks, and other ignition sources as the SDS requires;
evaluate switches, motors, heaters, and confined or low areas where vapors can accumulate;
ventilate by the approved method without creating an ignition source;
keep the specified extinguisher and emergency procedure available;
store and segregate cartridges and contaminated waste by the SDS.
“Low VOC,” “low odor,” and “water cleanup” are not synonyms for nonflammable or harmless. Read the pictograms and hazard statements on the exact product.
7.3 Weather is a bond and gunning gate
Measure the material, air, and substrate conditions that the TDS names. Check shaded and sun-heated surfaces, damp framing, dew, frost, precipitation, windblown dust, and the forecast through the product’s required early cure. Do not use air temperature alone as permission.
Postpone or provide manufacturer-approved environmental control when:
the substrate is outside the allowed temperature/moisture condition;
material has been frozen or overheated contrary to its storage rules;
rain, dew, frost, or wash water will reach the work too soon;
sun or wind will shorten the placement window beyond the crew’s plan;
an enclosed cavity cannot ventilate or release moisture/solvent as the cure requires;
temporary heat or covering would violate the product or fire controls.
7.4 Control lifting, overhead work, and ladders separately
A cartridge gun does not make panel lifting a one-person job. Use the handling equipment and crew needed for the part. Set ledgers, props, braces, and access before adhesive makes the piece time-sensitive.
The 46484 and 46420 have claimed ladder hooks. A hook parks the gun; it does not support a person, arrest a fall, secure a cartridge for transport, or authorize one-handed climbing. Hoist or hand up the gun, maintain the ladder’s required contact, work only inside a safe reach, release pressure before hooking, and change to a platform or lift when the assembly requires two hands or continuous support.
Prepare the two bond faces
8.1 Soundness comes first
Both faces must carry the stresses the cured system transfers. Remove or repair:
loose paint, weak coating, laitance, scale, rust, oxidation, dust, chalk, efflorescence, oil, grease, wax, release agent, curing compound, old adhesive, sealant, wallpaper, or friable material;
rotten, delaminated, cracked, spalled, swollen, distorted, or water-damaged substrate;
proud fasteners, high framing, low supports, gaps, and misalignment outside the assembly tolerance.
If the existing coating peels with light effort, bonding to it only attaches the new part to a failing film. If a joist or stud face is uneven, correct the framing by the approved method rather than burying the error in adhesive.
8.2 Clean by product and substrate
Vacuum loose debris first. Then use only the mechanical preparation, cleaner, and wipe method accepted by both the adhesive and substrate makers. Test cleaner on a hidden area where finish damage is possible. Allow the surface to reach the exact specified state before bonding.
Do not universalize “clean and dry.” Some exact products admit damp or frozen substrates; others require dry, porous, or conditioned surfaces. The TDS decides. Even where wet-surface application is claimed, standing water, ice, mud, oil, or a weak saturated surface may remain prohibited.
8.3 Prime only when directed
Primer is not generic strength in a can. Use only the named primer, substrate, coverage, application method, and bonding window. Keep it off finishes, fastener threads, drainage paths, and areas the instructions exclude. If the primer window expires or contamination lands on it, correct it by the manufacturer’s procedure rather than applying more adhesive.
8.4 Complete the required mock-up or adhesion test
Use representative production materials, including actual coatings, treatments, cleaning, primer, fasteners, support, bead pattern, and environmental condition. Let the mock-up reach the exact evaluation point, then test it by the maker’s stated method. Record cohesive/adhesive behavior and any staining, etching, softening, print-through, cure inhibition, or surface damage.
An uncured hand tug is not a bond test. A test on bare scrap does not clear a factory-coated production panel.
Inspect, open, load, and prove the cartridge
For construction adhesive, these points are load-bearing:
Inspect the gun empty. Confirm the exact model, cartridge class, straight rod, square thrust plate, sound frame, functional trigger and release, and clean cutter/punch where claimed.
Inspect the unopened cartridge. Reject unreadable, expired, swollen, split, leaking, crushed, heat-damaged, improperly frozen, separated, or partly cured material as its documents require.
Condition only as the product permits. A stiff cartridge is not permission for uncontrolled heating.
Confirm the opening sequence. Some nozzles are integral; others thread on. Some cartridges carry an inner foil; others use another closure. Do not assume.
Cut only the maker-specified opening. The built-in cutter is claimed on all four guns, but no Hyde claim establishes the adhesive’s bead size or cut geometry. A cut cannot be made smaller again.
Do not drive it into an unknown package.
Seat the correct rigid cartridge squarely. Heel and nozzle ends must locate naturally; no shims, bent frame, trimmed body, or improvised adapter.
Advance only to plunger contact. Contact is not working pressure.
Extrude onto disposable containment. Verify normal flow, cartridge integrity, controllable drive, and the model-specific pressure release.
Stop for abnormal load. No output after the path is opened, plate slip, grinding, body buckling, rear leakage, pulsing, frame spread, or unreasonable trigger effort requires diagnosis—not a harder squeeze.
The test bead goes to the waste route named by the SDS. It does not go onto the work merely because material is now moving.
Apply only the approved pattern
10.1 Put the adhesive on the face the instructions name
Depending on the system, that may be:
framing tops before subfloor placement;
the back of a panel or trim piece;
studs or a receiving backer;
one masonry/block face;
one or both specially prepared nonporous faces;
exact locations that avoid edges, fasteners, drainage paths, or finish telegraphing.
Do not move a pattern from one job to another. Straight beads on framing, perimeter beads, spaced vertical beads, serpentine fields, dabs, full-bed spreads, and contact-style transfer methods each belong only where an exact product/assembly says so. This guide intentionally supplies no bead diameter, spacing, edge offset, coverage, or universal pattern.
10.2 Start over containment and keep the nozzle moving
Bring the material to the tip on scrap. Place the nozzle at the start point, establish steady travel, and top up trigger pressure rhythmically. Keep the cartridge aligned with the run so the bead lands on the intended bond zone.
When output changes:
Bead starves: slow the travel only if the pattern allows; check remaining material, condition, opening, obstruction, and drive.
Bead fattens: speed up or release pressure; do not smear excess into forbidden zones.
Output pulses: release and diagnose partial opening, material separation, obstruction, or drive engagement.
Gun slips or cartridge deforms: stop, release, unload when safe, and recheck tool/material suitability.
10.3 End every bead before moving the gun
Keep the nozzle over the intended surface:
press the quick-release lever on 46435/46482;
perform the actual rod release on 46484;
release the trigger and confirm the claimed StopDrip result on 46420.
Then lift and park over containment. A tail of construction adhesive cures into a hard lump, contaminates the next bond face, creates a panel high spot, or lands on a finished surface that may require mechanical removal.
10.4 Respect the product’s open time
Mark the start time if the sequence is not self-evident. Place only what can be covered, seated, fastened, and supported inside the exact window. If the deadline is missed, do not wet the skinned bead, lay fresh adhesive over it, or close the assembly hoping pressure will restore it. Remove and replace the expired material by the manufacturer’s procedure.
Keep dust, saw chips, rain, dew, skin oil, and foot traffic off exposed adhesive. On subfloor work, cutting the next panel over an open bead is a contamination plan.
Close, seat, fasten, and support
11.1 Move the part once, under control
Lift by the dry-run path. Align reference edges and clearances before full contact where repositioning is limited. Set the piece without wiping the bead out of its bond zone. Apply the specified seating pressure across the assembly rather than hammering one point and forcing adhesive away from it.
Watch the edges and access holes for evidence:
expected, controlled squeeze-out where the instructions allow it;
no contact at an edge that should be bonded;
a hard high spot or rocking panel;
adhesive forced into a joint, fastener hole, drainage route, utility opening, or finish reveal;
a piece springing away after pressure is released.
Stop and correct before fasteners hide the condition. Do not assume that no squeeze-out means no bond or that abundant squeeze-out means good coverage; the approved pattern and inspection method decide.
11.2 Install permanent fasteners on the assembly schedule
Use the specified fastener, tool, depth, sequence, spacing, and edge distance. Keep the part seated while fastening. Do not overdrive and create a loose interface; do not leave proud heads that hold finishes off; do not substitute adhesive for a missed stud, joist, block, anchor, or clip.
For floor or panel work, fasten from the approved reference area so the sheet remains flat rather than trapping a bow. For trim, keep reveals and joints aligned while pins/screws are installed. For brittle finishes, use the maker’s drilling and fastening controls.
Fasteners are not clamps for correcting a fundamentally warped or misfit piece. If drawing the fastener bends the component or crushes the substrate, stop and fix the fit.
11.3 Install temporary support before the assembly can move
Clamp, brace, weight, prop, tape, or ledger only by the approved method:
distribute pressure so the face is not dented or bowed;
do not squeeze the adhesive bed dry;
do not block ventilation or the cure path;
keep braces from shifting under vibration, traffic, or weather;
keep supports visible and tagged with the earliest manufacturer-approved removal condition;
barricade overhead and vertical work against entry below.
“Instant grab” may reduce support for a specific product; it never authorizes the generic removal of all bracing, fasteners, or clamps. Follow the exact TDS and component instructions.
11.4 Clean squeeze-out on the product clock
Remove uncured excess by the adhesive maker’s named tool and cleaner without driving contamination into the bond edge. Protect porous stone, unfinished wood, painted faces, plastics, and mirror backing from cleaners that stain or attack them. Do not use solvent on skin.
If the instructions require cured material to be cut or scraped mechanically, decide whether removal would damage the finish before letting a visible smear cure. Collect wipes, nozzle cuts, test beads, and cleaner waste under the SDS/local route; never wash adhesive into a drain or soil by default.
Protect the cure and control return to service
12.1 Cure is a process, not one timestamp
Track the exact milestones separately:
placement/open-time closure;
support or clamp release;
fastener or assembly inspection;
foot or vehicle traffic;
sanding, trimming, painting, or finishing;
water or weather exposure;
The TDS may define some and remain silent on others. A silent milestone is unresolved, not permission. Temperature, humidity, substrate porosity, bead thickness, enclosed bond area, and moisture availability can change cure. Do not borrow a neighboring product’s clock.
12.2 Do not accelerate cure by improvisation
Do not direct heaters, flame, hot air, dehumidifiers, water mist, plastic wrapping, or fans at the assembly unless the exact product/system instructions approve the method and the fire/ventilation plan supports it. Water-based products may need drying; moisture-curing products may respond differently; solvent-bearing products may need vapor release. One cure aid can defeat another chemistry.
Do not remove shims, braces, weights, clamps, or ledgers early because exposed squeeze-out feels hard. The interior bond can lag the exposed edge.
12.3 Protect from people, weather, and following trades
Tag or barricade the assembly with:
application date/time;
earliest traffic/load/water/finish milestone;
person responsible for release.
Prevent vibration, impact, panel flexing, water, frost, dust, painting, washing, sanding, and construction traffic until the documents allow them. A following trade should not have to guess whether a bonded floor, wall, stair component, or trim assembly is ready.
Readback: prove the work at three stages
13.1 Immediate placement readback
Before the area is concealed:
correct adhesive/product/lot and in-date status recorded;
substrate preparation and primer recorded;
environmental conditions inside the permitted window;
required pattern applied to the correct face;
every exposed bead closed inside its open time;
component seated to line, plane, reveal, spacing, and clearance;
permanent fasteners complete to the approved schedule;
temporary support complete and stable;
drainage paths, joints, utilities, and operating clearances open;
squeeze-out removed without finish damage;
gun and cartridge left depressurized and controlled.
Photograph the pattern where the assembly permits documentation before closure, then photograph the fastened/supported result. Do not let photography delay placement.
13.2 Support-release readback
At the exact documented condition for support removal:
verify the environment and elapsed product clock;
inspect braces/weights/clamps before disturbing them;
remove support in a controlled order while watching for movement, spring-back, edge opening, slip, or sound;
stop and re-support if the assembly moves;
inspect fasteners, joints, plane, and finish again.
Support removal is an observation point, not a destructive strength test. Do not hang, bounce, pry, or overload the work to “make sure.”
13.3 Post-cure / return-to-service readback
At the manufacturer’s required evaluation point:
inspect for edge release, gaps, movement, staining, etching, print-through, bubbles, uncured squeeze-out, odor or residue inconsistent with the instructions, corrosion, cracked substrate, loose fasteners, or panel distortion;
perform only the maker’s specified adhesion, tap, pull, traffic, water, or functional test;
verify doors, windows, panels, trim, fixtures, drains, and adjacent components still operate;
compare the accepted mock-up or witness sample where the project uses one;
record the person, time, condition, observations, and release decision.
Appearance does not certify structural capacity.
What goes wrong (and the fix)

Buyer tests: choose among the exact four
Choose 46435 when:
the approved adhesive is in a standard 9" rigid cartridge;
seeing the cartridge and remaining material during production matters;
the open skeleton frame’s visibility and mess-shedding suit the job;
frequent manual pressure dumps are preferred;
orange powder coat is acceptable for the tool’s storage environment.
Do not buy it on an assumed thrust ratio.
Choose 46482 when:
the approved adhesive is in a standard 9" rigid cartridge;
a chrome-plated Professional Heavy-Duty frame is preferred for gang-box service;
a hex-rod/quick-release workflow suits repeated ground-level placements;
cutter and puncture tool on the gun are useful;
no ladder hook or StopDrip behavior is required.
Choose 46484 when:
the approved adhesive is in a standard 9" rigid cartridge;
positive ratchet advance is preferred;
the contoured trigger and chrome-plated Professional Heavy-Duty tier fit the work;
a claimed ladder hook is useful in a separately safe elevated-access plan;
the operator will learn and use the actual rod release at every stop.
Choose 46420 when:
the exact approved adhesive is available in a compatible 13"/32 oz. rigid cartridge;
the work can consume the larger format inside the product’s use/storage rules;
fewer reloads improve a planned subfloor, panel, or other production sequence;
claimed StopDrip behavior and the ladder hook are useful;
the larger loaded tool can be handled safely through the full run.
Capacity is not force.
Reject all four for this job when:
the material is a sausage, bulk product, or ratio-controlled dual cartridge;
the adhesive maker requires a named powered/high-thrust dispenser and Hyde suitability cannot be established;
the intended cartridge cannot be controlled without slip, buckling, leakage, or unreasonable force;
the assembly requires a certified anchoring, firestop, glazing, or proprietary dispensing system;
the required chemical, fire, ventilation, access, support, or waste controls cannot be provided.
The history footnote: the adhesive cartridge inherited the caulking gun
The machine predates construction adhesive in disposable tubes. Theodore F. Witte of Chilliwack, British Columbia patented a nozzled, plunger-driven “Puttying-Tool” in 1894, intended to carry putty and apply it without a knife or fingers ([U.S. Patent 512,930]( The familiar rigid cartridge arrived later. DAP’s company history records the Dicks-Pontius Company’s role in putting caulk into disposable cartridges during the 1940s–50s, turning a bulk-loaded trade tool into a standardized gun-and-ammunition system (DAP — History).
Construction adhesive eventually occupied that same package because the mechanics were already right: a contained paste, a sacrificial nozzle, and controlled plunger pressure. The more useful historical truth is visible in the current aisle: one century-old dispensing pattern now carries chemistries Witte never designed for, which is why the package can fit while the material, hazard, thrust, substrate, and cure requirements remain entirely different.
Hyde does not make the adhesive decision, approve the load path, or supply a universal cure clock.
No force ranking, viscosity ceiling, or daily stiff-adhesive promise is authorized.

Structural claims: the word “adhesive” in Hyde’s gun scope establishes dispensability, not approval for any structural assembly.

A sealant joint and an adhesive bond are not interchangeable.
