How to Fill Pin Holes, Brad Holes, and Hairline Flaws
Hyde’s accepted product evidence identifies two paint spatulas and their listed widths and shared construction. It does not establish a defect-size chart, repair-material compatibility, substrate compatibility, blade geometry, contact method, force, finish system, safety procedure, or cleanup method.

It does not diagnose structural movement, moisture, or substrate failure. When the defect is moving, wet, structural, part of a rated or performance-critical assembly, hazardous, unidentified, or outside the admitted repair system, the correct result is STOP — SYSTEM DISPOSITION REQUIRED.
Job: close an admitted cosmetic pin hole, known brad hole, or stable hairline surface flaw with the exact repair material and finish system specified for the actual substrate or assembly, leaving a traceable repair ready for the next maker-authorized stage.
Result: the flaw is classified, stop conditions are cleared, one row product is admitted, and the fill survives striking and local feathering through the exact system’s readback.
Time: no universal duration is authorable. “Dry to the touch” is not a substitute for a named stage.

Hyde identifies both as paint spatulas with hardened-and-tempered spring-steel blades, two-piece hardwood handles, and double-rivet construction. Those facts are not a repair-material rating. Working-end profile, tip, offset, proportions, complete-tool wetted compatibility, alloy or finish beyond spring steel, and approved cleaner remain unstated.
No generic filler, primer, paint, abrasive, cleaner, or protective ensemble is prescribed.
Classify the observed defect before choosing a repair
Do not begin with a product name or assume every narrow mark is cosmetic. Begin with what is established.
Pin hole
The name does not establish depth, substrate, cause, or material. Stop if the opening exposes an unknown layer, penetrates an enclosure, enters a joint, or is not bounded by the admitted system.
Brad hole
Use this class only when the origin is traceable to a known brad and the work is released for cosmetic repair. Shape alone is not proof. Stop if a fastener remains, is loose or load-bearing, belongs to uncertain attachment, or removal caused damage outside the admitted repair.
Hairline flaw
Use this class only for a line-shaped surface discontinuity already accepted as stable, cosmetic, and repairable by the named system. “Hairline” is appearance, not a dimension, diagnosis, or promise. A line at a joint, corner, opening, fastener pattern, material change, moving member, recurring repair, or performance-critical surface cannot be admitted by sight alone.
Immediate stop classes
Record the observation and stop without probing, widening, sanding, scraping, wetting, filling, or coating when any of the following is present:
Movement: the line changes, opens and closes, is offset, recurs after prior repair, follows a moving joint, or is accompanied by displacement, looseness, vibration, or an unresolved attachment condition.
Moisture: active dampness, staining, softness, swelling, blistering, efflorescence, corrosion, biological growth, a leak history without closure evidence, or a prior repair that failed with moisture signs.
Structural uncertainty: the component may carry, brace, retain, support, enclose, or protect, or the defect’s role is unknown. This guide does not decide whether a crack is structural.
Rated or performance-critical construction: fire-, smoke-, acoustic-, pressure-, weather-, vapor-, waterproofing-, hygiene-, containment-, or other rated performance may be affected.
Hazard: suspected lead-based paint, asbestos-containing material, hazardous coating or filler, contamination, energy, heat, process exposure, or missing controls. EPA warns that disturbing paint in covered pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities can create dangerous lead dust and says suspected asbestos-containing material should not be touched or scraped. Route the work through the applicable program.
Unknown or degraded material: the substrate, coating, patch, sealant, texture, or prior repair cannot be identified; the surface is crumbling, delaminating, friable, chemically attacked, or otherwise outside the exact repair instructions.
Do not use the spatula to probe. That converts classification into damage and may destroy evidence.
A repair system is a joined set of permissions. Assemble its documents before opening material.
They must admit the actual substrate and defect class and control preparation, application, limits, rework, next stage, and disposal.
“Paintable” does not prove compatibility with the existing or planned finish.
Permission for “steel tools” does not automatically admit the handle, riveted joint, finish, residue, or prior-use history.
OSHA’s mandatory SDS structure locates identity, hazards, handling, exposure controls, incompatibilities, and disposal information.
Do not average instructions, borrow from another system, or let a small defect waive a listing, warranty, or hazard rule.
Make a defect register and witness plan
Give each admitted flaw an identifier.
Document the starting state when required. Preserve recurrence, moisture, attachment, or movement evidence.
When required, make a witness repair in the named location and sequence. It must prove preparation, material, tool contact, fill, finish, and readback—not merely placement. Do not transfer approval across assemblies or substrate/finish combinations.
Admit one of the two exact spatulas
Match the tool or traceable packaging to 41010 or 41060; do not infer the model by sight. Inspect it under the tool owner’s released criterion. Unresolved residue, corrosion, deformation, handle or rivet damage, working-contact damage, or unknown prior chemistry requires quarantine.
Confirm that the intended working contact:
can approach the admitted flaw without forcing the tool or contacting a prohibited adjacent surface;
can carry and place the repair material without requiring an unapproved part of the tool to contact it;
can cross the local repair and leave along a controlled path;
can be withdrawn without levering, gouging, opening the flaw, or damaging the finish; and
allows the worker to see or otherwise perform the named readback.
Width may distinguish the candidates physically but does not decide selection. If both pass, follow the released selection rule. If neither passes, use neither. Do not bend, grind, trim, reshape, or improvise an offset.
Record the model and why it passed. Defect-size slogans are not receipts.
Prepare only by the exact system
Protect and isolate the work as required. Recheck stop conditions immediately before contact; any change returns the defect to classification.
Perform only the preparation named by the exact system. This guide does not authorize widening, undercutting, abrasion, sanding, drilling, wetting, solvent wiping, priming, sealing, or finish removal. Remove nothing merely because it looks loose.
Condition the product exactly as directed. Make no unlisted addition. Hold skinned, gelled, contaminated, separated, expired, improperly stored, or abnormal material under its maker’s instructions; do not recover it with the spatula.
Dispense a controlled portion by the approved method. Keep the source traceable and uncontaminated. Return nothing unless expressly permitted.
Execute the qualitative fill–strike–feather loop
The exact repair-system sequence controls. Where it permits a qualitative hand-tool method without numeric values, use this loop.
Take only enough material for one controlled placement and keep it on the admitted contact. A large load hides whether the opening filled or was merely covered.
If the material falls, strings, skins, separates, contaminates the tool, or otherwise behaves outside its instructions, stop. Do not compensate with more material, force, or repeated wiping.
Place and fill
Bring the load to the flaw without crossing an unapproved area. Deposit it, then move it into the opening. The goal is continuity inside the repair, not a cap over it.
Use another approach only if the system permits it; never probe or enlarge the defect. For a line-shaped flaw, advance in connected short sections so each joins the last. A distant drag that leaves only a surface film is not a fill.
If the material recedes, reveals an open center, pulls out with the tool, exposes movement or moisture, or disappears into an unbounded void, stop. The defect is not proved to be inside this procedure.
While the material remains in its authorized working state, make a controlled crossing pass that removes excess but leaves the opening full. A successful strike reduces the crown without reopening the center.
If the fill comes out, do not immediately repeat the same pass. Determine whether the failure was incomplete placement, contamination, a prohibited surface condition, material outside its working state, or an unadmitted defect. Repeat only when the exact system permits re-placement at this stage.
No universal direction, angle, pressure, stroke count, or material thickness is asserted. The actual surface, product instruction, and released method decide those values where they matter.
Feather only after the fill survives striking. Within the permitted margin, reduce the edge with progressively lighter contact and leave no new deposit at the outside boundary.
Keep feathering local. If the transition requires expanding beyond the authorized margin, building a patch field, or using repeated broad passes, stop and route the job to the broader repair method. Do not let a paint spatula become an unapproved substitute for a putty knife, finishing knife, patch system, joint treatment, or coating applicator.
Wet-state readback
At the exact system’s named inspection point, view or measure the repair under the declared conditions. Check for:
an open center, shadow, pinhole, or visible break in the filled path;
material pulled out or dragged away during striking;
a ridge, tail, lap, or abrupt outside boundary;
contamination, color transfer, debris, or tool damage;
damage to the surrounding substrate or finish;
new moisture, movement, widening, displacement, or another stop condition; and
material outside the authorized repair margin.
Assign PASS TO NEXT STAGE, REWORK AUTHORIZED, or STOP — SYSTEM DISPOSITION REQUIRED.
Hold, finish, and final readback
Leave the repair undisturbed until the exact instruction admits the next action. No drying, curing, recoat, handling, or return-to-service clock and no sanding step is supplied here.
A successful filler readback does not prove coating adhesion, stain blocking, sheen match, texture match, color match, weathering, or assembly performance.
At the final named stage, confirm that the flaw remains closed, the transition passes, no new ridge, sink, stain, crack, contamination, or finish defect appeared, and required records are complete. Recurrence returns the location to classification.
What goes wrong — and the controlled response
The “hairline” reopens while you work. Stop. Movement has been observed.
The fill disappears into the opening. The repair is not bounded or controlled. Stop rather than feeding an unknown cavity.
The material sits over the flaw. Re-place only if the exact system permits; otherwise hold for an authorized method.
The strike pulls the repair out. Stop and use the exact rework branch. Do not add force, change tools, wet the surface, or invent a wait.
A ridge remains after feathering. Do not spread farther by default. If the admitted margin is exhausted, hand off to the broader repair system.
The surrounding finish lifts, softens, stains, or transfers. Stop. The existing finish, repair material, preparation, or tool contact is not proved compatible.
The tool leaves residue or visible color. Quarantine both tool and repair. A visibly wiped blade is not proof that the complete tool is clean or chemically neutral.
The material changes state on the board or tool. Stop under the exact product instructions. Do not restore workability with an unlisted addition.
Cosmetic closure cannot prove that a leak or vapor condition is resolved.
The same location has been repaired before. Treat recurrence as a stop condition, not permission for another cosmetic cycle.
The defect reaches a joint, corner, fastener line, opening, or material transition. Reclassify under the responsible assembly method. This guide does not decide whether the location is cosmetic.
The repair looks smooth but the finish fails. Keep repair and finish acceptance separate; use the exact finish correction.
Cleanup, storage, and waste
End contact while the named cleanup route remains available. Keep source, working material, rejects, residue, wipes, and cleanup output separated and identified. Return nothing unless expressly permitted.
If they do not intersect, label and quarantine the tool. Do not improvise a medium or method.
Close, store, transfer, or dispose of the repair and finish products, working portions, residues, and contaminated materials only through their exact instructions and applicable waste rules. This guide does not authorize a sink, drain, soil, ordinary-trash, recycling, or hazardous-waste route.
Update the register with final disposition, required identities, tool model, acceptance, and holds.
Which spatula should I use for a pin hole or hairline flaw?
Use only 41010 or 41060 after the repair system admits the complete tool and a stopped check proves control. Width does not create a defect-size assignment.
Is 41010 the hairline tool and 41060 the brad-hole tool?
Not as an accepted product fact. Older local guides make that assignment from width and inferred geometry. Current Hyde evidence establishes identity, widths, and shared construction—not defect fit, control, or repair performance.
What filler should I use?
The exact substrate or assembly and finish system must admit it. This guide chooses no product by defect appearance.
How large can the hole or crack be?
No universal dimension applies. Area repair leaves this guide.
Should I open or widen a hairline before filling?
Only if the exact system requires it and supplies the method. This guide authorizes none of those actions.
How thick should the fill be, and how long should I wait?
Use only the exact material instruction. No universal thickness, number of lifts, working time, drying time, cure time, or recoat time is supplied here.
Can I paint it immediately after it looks dry?
Only at the stage and with the exact primer or coating system authorized by the joined instructions. Appearance does not establish readiness or compatibility.
What if the flaw keeps coming back?
Stop cosmetic repair. Recurrence is evidence that the condition has not been admitted as stable.
Can I repair a crack in a fire-rated wall this way?
Not from this guide. A cosmetic fill cannot be assumed to restore a rating.
What should I wear and what should I clean with?
This guide intentionally supplies no PPE set or universal cleaner.
Can I reuse the same spatula with another filler or color?
Only when a released cleaning and inspection process proves it acceptable for the next exact material. Visible cleanliness is not proof of chemical or color neutrality.
History footnote
Hyde says these spatulas were originally designed for chemists and printers and now have many uses for painters and decorators. That bounded statement shows a bench tool crossing among trades that worked small material quantities. Hyde names no inventor, patent, introduction date, original process, or first surface-repair use, so this guide assigns none.
Exact federal, state, Tribal, local, workplace, and project rules still control the actual location.
Registration does not prove that Hyde rates either tool to fill any substrate, defect, repair material, or finish system.
Width versus defect selection: 3/8 inch and 5/8 inch are accepted identities. No accepted Hyde claim assigns pin holes, brad holes, hairlines, defect dimensions, access, placement control, striking, feathering, or finish quality to either width.
Geometry and material extrapolation: shared spring-steel/hardwood/double-rivet construction is accepted. Working-end profile, tip, offset, proportions, flexibility claim, complete-tool wetted area, alloy/finish beyond spring steel, corrosion behavior, and chemical resistance are unresolved.
Product-guide conflicts: the existing 41010 and 41060 guides assign defect types by inferred width and geometry, describe the spring temper as a miniature feathering mechanism, draw a dimension-like boundary against nail holes, and prescribe carbon-steel care. Those claims are not adopted here and must be reconciled or suppressed before the surfaces are ingested together.
This guide admits none by class name alone.
No universal safety or cleanup: neither the row nor the accepted Hyde evidence supplies repair-material PPE, ventilation, containment, emergency response, cleaner, immersion, residue, storage, or disposal instructions.
After the conflict gate is closed, each of those two product records must carry the reciprocal application edge back to fill-pin-holes-and-hairline-flaws.
