Difficulty: the film is easy; the load is the job. Film may hide goods, restraints, voids, or a leaning stack.

First: distinguish the film, the restraint, and the load

Stretch film / pallet wrap is elastic film stretched around a load. Its recovery force pulls the package inward and helps unitize the stack. It commonly appears as spiral bands, overlapped most heavily at the top and pallet base. Cut it and the tension relaxes along the opening; loose film can recoil, snap across a hand, or drag across projecting corners.

Heat-shrink film is placed as a sleeve, bag, or web and heated so it contracts around the load. It may fit like a skin, bridge voids, form heavier seams, or trap air.

Strapping, banding, netting, edge boards, caps, bags, and tie-downs may coexist with either film. This row is a film-removal guide. It does not authorize cutting steel banding, tensioned plastic strap, cord, netting, or an unknown restraint. Those materials store and release energy differently and require their own assessed tool and sequence.

Film may provide weather protection, tamper evidence, and load containment at once. If cartons bulge against it, layers are misregistered, the stack leans, product shifts when pressed, or wrap visibly carries a corner, treat it as structural containment until the load is supported.

That principle survives the delivery dock: do not cut away the thing currently keeping an unstable load upright and then try to catch the load with your body.

Put the pallet in a place where it can be opened

Work at floor level on a firm, level surface. Do not unwrap a pallet elevated on forklift forks, a raised order picker, a damaged rack position, a tailgate, a dock edge, or another base from which either worker or product can fall. Lower and park the load under the site’s powered-industrial-truck procedure before hand work begins.

Stop vehicle movement. Separate the breakdown zone from forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors, trailer movement, and pedestrian traffic. A knife task performed while the pallet moves is not this task.

Light all four faces. Transparent film is best at hiding transparent film: folded webs, tails, seams, and tension lines disappear in glare. Add light or turn the pallet by approved mechanical handling; do not reach blind behind it.

Give the operator an exit. Keep the fall side clear and never stand between the pallet and a wall, rack, adjacent pallet, trailer wall, or fixed equipment. The operator needs somewhere to step that is not the path of the load.

Control adjacent loads. Film tails and straps can snag a pallet behind the one being opened. An OSHA accident record describes a fatal event in which cut wrap or banding caught an adjacent stacked load and pulled it over. Isolate the target and make sure the removed web cannot tow, hook, or disturb its neighbor.

If the pallet cannot be lowered, isolated, illuminated, and approached without entrapment, stop. The answer is a different handling setup, not a longer reach with the knife.

Read the load before touching the wrap

Walk the pallet. Do not start where you happen to be standing.

Look for loss-of-containment warnings

a leaning stack, shifted layer, crushed bottom carton, broken pallet deck, missing corner support, torn bag, displaced drum, or product pressing hard into the film;

wrap stretched white, necked thin, split, or carrying a sharp carton corner;

loose items on top, overhang beyond the pallet, or an upper layer not keyed to the layer below;

liquid, granules, or powder inside the wrap that may indicate a leaking container;

bulges that change when the film is pressed lightly from outside;

straps or edge boards whose load cannot be understood from the accessible face;

a pallet stacked above comfortable shoulder reach, requiring blind overhead cutting or pulling.

If any warning appears, establish an exclusion zone and control the load before removing containment. The sequence depends on what is leaning and where it can fall; there is no universal top-first or bottom-first rule for an unstable pallet.

Map what lies immediately behind the film

The blade path is not empty just because the film is clear.

Identify cartons versus exposed product; soft bags, finished faces, labels, barriers, and liquid containers; gaps or recessed corners that supply real air clearance; straps, edge protection, fasteners, wire, and splinters; damaged areas where goods migrated into a former void; and the likely direction of film relaxation.

Opaque, black, printed, heavily layered, dirty, frosted, or condensed film defeats visual inspection. If the product cannot be located confidently, do not stab through to discover it. Create a visible air gap with an approved lifter from an exposed edge, remove an accessible tail by hand if it releases without strain, or route the load to a controlled opening method. Unknown clearance is a stop condition.

Decide whether 42067 is the correct cutter for this exact cut

The row’s tool has three documented controls: rounded tip, short 1/4-inch exposure, and retraction on button release. Each solves one problem and leaves others open.

What the short exposure does

It limits how far steel projects and imposes a capacity boundary. If thick folds, bunched film, reinforced covers, or compressed layers will not enter the edge without forcing, the cut does not fit. Do not defeat short exposure by crushing or sawing the knife into the load.

What the round tip does

It removes the sharp puncture point; the working edge remains sharp enough to cut a person, package, liner, or product. Start at an existing edge or mechanically created air gap, not by stabbing a field of tight film.

What self-retraction does

Retraction reduces exposed-edge time after a normal stroke. It does not help if the operator holds the button through follow-through, defeats the slider, or puts a body part in the edge path. Verify it before use and after contamination or impact; quarantine a sticking mechanism.

The admission test

Admit this system only when the load is stable or independently controlled; the material is film; product clearance is proved; an edge or air gap accepts the round tip; all layers fit the exposure without force; the stroke exits into open air away from body and goods; retraction works; blade and body pass inspection; and the trained worker has the required PPE and disposal controls.

Fail one, stop and redesign the opening. There is no universal safe cutter for every pallet: not a round-tip knife, not a concealed-blade cutter, not scissors, and not bare hands. Tool choice follows the actual film, clearance, load, frequency, sanitation, cold, contaminants, PPE, and failure consequences.

Select PPE from the task, not from the product name

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 requires appropriate hand protection where hands face cut, puncture, abrasion, chemical, thermal, and related hazards, and makes selection depend on the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards. The facility’s hazard assessment therefore chooses glove construction and performance; this guide does not invent one cut level.

Hands and forearms: protection must fit, preserve slider control, and match knife, pallet, fastener, chemical, cold, and contamination hazards. Cut-resistant is not cut-proof; the off hand never becomes a film hook.

Eyes, face, and feet: assess recoiling film, straps, debris, leaks, falling cartons, pallet-jack wheels, broken boards, nails, and the dropped tool.

Body: PPE cannot solve a falling load. Isolation, support, blocking, and controlled unloading come first under the NIOSH hierarchy of controls.

Do not wear loose jewelry or clothing that can catch the film. Do not climb the pallet, stand on its deck, or brace product against the thigh while cutting.

Inspect and prepare the cutting system

Confirm identity. The knife is 42067; the installed blade is an approved round-tip pattern. Confirm current instructions.

Inspect the body. No cracks, deformation, loose parts, contamination, improvised repairs, or slider damage. Die-cast metal is a documented construction fact, not immunity from damage.

Test retraction away from the load. Extend and release into a controlled empty zone. Quarantine slow, gritty, partial, or intermittent motion.

Inspect without touching the edge. Round tip present; no chip, bend, corrosion, adhesive, or missing fragment. Never test on skin.

Change a dragging blade under the verified procedure. Keep hands off the edge and contain the spent blade.

Test uncertain fit on representative waste film. Prove the actual fold severs without force inside a known air gap.

Choose 42117 for five replacements or 42118 for controlled 100-pack replenishment. Pack size is not cutting performance; both carry the same accepted .025-inch round-tip family claim.

Open the wrap in controlled stages

There is no universal first-cut height. Select the start from the load map so product clearance, body path, and stability are all controlled.

Stand at a visible, accessible face outside the predicted fall side. Keep feet clear of the pallet deck and product footprint. Face the work without twisting.

Choose a void or outside corner with proved clearance. A recessed vertical carton corner, open pallet gap, or lifted loose tail may provide space. Do not assume every corner is empty; products and bags often overhang into them.

Create separation without fingers. Use an approved blunt lifter or film hook to tent the web away from the goods. Keep the off hand on the tool handle or outside the cut zone—not behind the film where the blade is aimed. If no air gap can be made, stop.

Set the round tip into the gap from an edge. Do not plunge the knife through the field. Extend only through the tool’s normal control; never defeat retraction.

Make a short proving cut. Exit into visible air, with travel beside the torso rather than toward abdomen, thigh, off hand, or another person.

Release the button as the edge leaves the film. Confirm the blade retracts before changing grip, moving, reaching, or handling the cut web.

Watch the load and film respond. Pause. If a carton shifts, a layer settles, a bulge grows, a strap takes new load, or the cut opens violently, leave the zone and re-control the pallet.

Enlarge only as needed. Re-prove the gap in short sections. Never make one blind slash down a loaded face; clearance, layer count, and load reaction change.

Peel when peeling works. Retract and park the knife, then gather film from an edge while clear of the stack. Do not yank a tail threaded behind another pallet, under a load, around a strap, or through machinery.

Remove containment in the unload sequence. If the pallet will be picked layer by layer, expose only the portion needed for the controlled pick while retaining useful containment below, provided the facility’s assessed method permits it. If partial wrap creates loose tails or false stability, remove or resecure it.

Handle the base separately. Film wrapped under pallet corners may be pinched by the load. Do not reach beneath product or lift a loaded pallet by hand to free it. Park the knife, use approved material-handling support, and remove only film that is accessible without entering a crush zone.

Recontain before movement. A partially broken pallet is not transport-ready because it arrived wrapped. Restack, block, strap, cage, or rewrap it under the facility’s load standard before forklift or pallet-jack travel.

Body-path law

Before every stroke, say where four things will go: the edge, the knife hand, the released film, and the load. If any answer is “into me,” “into my other hand,” “into the product,” “blind behind the pallet,” or “unknown,” do not make the stroke.

Material- and load-specific branches

Opaque or heavily printed film

Visibility is gone. Use an exposed tail or controlled lifting method to create and verify separation. Do not trade a visual problem for a puncture start. If the load cannot be mapped from another face or records, route it to a safer opening station.

Soft bags and sacks

Assume the product conforms to the film with zero clearance. Powder, granules, resin, food, seed, soil amendments, and other bagged goods can leak from a tiny knife score and destabilize lower layers. Independent blocking and a positive air gap are prerequisites. If neither exists, this is not a 42067 hand-cut.

Finished faces, furniture, appliances, coils, and fabric goods

Film may be directly laminated by tension to a scratch-sensitive surface. A rounded tip reduces point damage but the edge still scores. Work only from spacers, edge protectors, or accessible voids; otherwise use a process designed to separate cutter from product. Do not slide steel along the face.

Cold rooms and freezers

Cold can stiffen film, reduce dexterity, fog eyewear, change glove performance, and affect a retracting mechanism. A tool that worked warm is not automatically released cold.

Contaminated or leaking loads

Stop before cutting spreads an unknown liquid, powder, biological material, or chemical onto the worker or tool. Identify the material, consult the facility response plan and SDS where applicable, select chemical/biological PPE and containment, and determine whether the knife can be decontaminated.

What goes wrong — cause, stop, and recovery

“The blade will not reach through the corner bundle.” Too many layers or bunched film for the short exposure. Find a single-web edge, peel layers apart with an approved non-sharp tool, or select a different assessed method. Do not force or saw.

“I nicked a carton or product.” Stop cutting. Secure and identify the affected unit, check whether inner packaging or contents are compromised, follow damage/quality procedures, and reassess the air-gap method. A round tip is not product-proof.

“The knife stays open or retracts slowly.” Keep it pointed into the controlled zone, release the control, set it down without passing it hand to hand, and quarantine it. Do not continue “carefully.”

“The film snaps back.” Nobody handles it until the edge is retracted. Reassess tension direction, eye/face exposure, and the starting point. Reduce the next opening to a shorter controlled cut.

“The stack moves after the first cut.” Leave the fall zone. Do not hold the load. Establish blocking, containment, or mechanical control and rewrite the sequence before resuming.

“A film tail is trapped under the pallet.” Do not pull against load weight or put hands, feet, or knife beneath the pallet. Support or move the load with approved equipment, then recover the film from outside the crush zone.

“Wrap is caught on the next pallet.” Stop all movement. Isolate both loads and release the connection from a controlled position. The removed film is capable of transmitting force; the OSHA fatality record makes that a proved consequence, not a hypothetical.

“The blade chips or a fragment is missing.” Stop, account for the fragment, quarantine the tool, inspect affected product, and invoke the site’s foreign-material/damage procedure.

“Operators keep holding the slider down while peeling.” The task design is defeating the retraction control. Separate cut and peel into distinct actions: cut, release, visually confirm closed, park the knife, then peel.

“Gloves make the control hard to operate.” Do not remove required protection or alter the tool. Reassess glove fit and dexterity, tool choice, work height, and method under the employer’s PPE program.

Record near misses as well as injuries and product damage: sticking retraction, repeated force, unexpected thick folds, load shift, hidden contents, glove interference, film recoil, wrong blades, and uncontrolled disposal are all leading indicators.

Finish the job: product, tool, film, and pallet

Inspect the opened goods. Look for blade scores, torn bags, shifted packages, exposed contamination barriers, detached labels, and items loosened by containment removal.

Restore stability. Restack and recontain any remainder before storage or movement. Mark a pallet that cannot safely travel and isolate it.

Collect film continuously. Loose wrap is a trip, entanglement, conveyor, and housekeeping hazard. Keep it out of aisles, wheels, forks, dock plates, and machine infeed. Do not wear it around the arm or neck.

Segregate materials correctly. Remove labels, tape, straps, or contaminated portions only as the local recycling program requires.

Inspect the knife after use. Blade intact and retracted; body clean; mechanism functioning. Follow verified cleaning instructions. Do not leave an active tool on the pallet, in loose film, or where another person reaches blind.

Account for replacement blades. Issue 42117 or 42118 stock through a method that separates new and spent blades and prevents loose-blade carry. Pack count does not replace inventory control.

The history: from heat tunnels to elastic unit loads

Pallet wrapping is younger than the palletized warehouse it now seems inseparable from. Early plastic unit-load systems often used heat-shrinkable shrouds: put a film cover around the load, apply heat, and let contraction tighten the package. The energy and equipment belonged to the wrapping operation; removal inherited a tight skin around whatever had been shipped.

Stretch wrapping took a different route. Instead of shrinking film with heat, the system elongated a plastic web as it went around the pallet and used its elastic recovery to hold the load together. A 1976 U.S. patent for a stretchable pallet wrapper described the goal plainly: bind palletized loads, discourage theft, improve weather protection, and obtain wrapping force from stretch and release while avoiding problems of shrink systems ([U.S. Patent 3,961,459]( A 1979 patent for elastic pallet netting explicitly distinguished the two methods—stretch wrapping a tensioned web versus heating shrink film in a tunnel—and described the stretched material as the force maintaining the load on the pallet ([U.S. Patent 4,136,501](

That history explains the removal problem. The plastic is not merely a transparent bag waiting to be opened; it may be the final structural operation that turned cartons into a unit load. Cutting reverses that operation locally and quickly. The modern short-exposure, self-retracting, round-tip knife is an attempt to reduce the hazards of the cutting edge during that reversal. It cannot reverse the load safely by itself. Stability assessment, product clearance, body path, and controlled sequence are the other half of the tool.

Is 42067 a “safe cutter” for every pallet?

Hyde documents safety-oriented features: round tip, short exposure, die-cast body, and self-retraction. None establishes universal suitability. A stable clear-film carton pallet with a visible void is different from an opaque skin over soft bags, a leaning load, a frozen mechanism, or thick reinforced cover. Assess the whole system.

Do round-tip blades prevent product damage?

They reduce point-puncture capability; the working edge still cuts. Product separation remains mandatory.

Are 42117 and 42118 different blades?

The accepted Hyde claims describe both as heavy-duty .025-inch round-tip blades. The documented difference is pack count: five versus 100. Any coating, grind, edge-life, dimensional, or performance difference beyond that is unproved and not claimed.

Can I cut plastic or steel banding at the same time?
