How to Clean Grout Lines
Grout cleaning is not one recipe: cementitious grout, epoxy/resin grout, unknown grout, glazed ceramic, natural stone, metal trim, soap film, biological growth, mineral salts, and failed joints do not tolerate the same treatment.

Difficulty: easy when the joint is sound and the deposit is ordinary soil; diagnostic when the grout type or tile is unknown; stop-and-escalate work when salts keep returning, grout powders under the brush, tile or stone is chemically sensitive, or moisture is coming through the assembly.

The narrow face is made to get between tiles. It scrubs soil and carries cleaner through a recessed joint without introducing metal.
It is still a wire brush: use it only after the surface-and-cleaner test, keep it in the joint, and keep it off soft, crazed, polished, plated, or otherwise uncertain faces.
It is for a hard, sound joint and a deposit the first two brushes did not remove.

What this store does not supply for the complete job: the cleaner chemistry, grout sealer, rubber grout float, grout sponge, replacement grout, moisture diagnosis, or stone-restoration service. The three Hyde brushes agitate a joint. They do not choose chemistry, repair a leak, restore etched stone, replace missing grout, or make failed grout sound.
Before you start: diagnose the assembly, not just the color
Record what the tile and grout actually are
Find the tile carton, installation invoice, leftover grout bag, sealer bottle, or installer record if any survives. Those records outrank a guess made from appearance.
Cementitious grout often looks matte or granular and may absorb a small drop of clean water once any sealer has worn, but none of those observations proves the chemistry. A sealed cement grout may shed water; a dense cement grout may look smooth; pigment and coatings can disguise both. Treat powdering, sandy shedding, cracks, and missing edges as condition evidence, not as a positive chemistry test.
Epoxy or other resin grout often presents a denser, less absorbent, more uniform surface. Again, appearance is not proof. Different resin systems have different cleaner resistance, and an aggressive cleaner that one epoxy tolerates may damage another joint, its color, or the tile beside it.
Unknown grout stays unknown. Do not resolve uncertainty by trying stronger chemistry. Begin with the tile manufacturer’s approved neutral cleaner or plain water if permitted, the 46807 nylon brush, and a hidden test.
Identify every surface the cleaner or brush can touch
A grout line is a narrow target bounded by more valuable materials:
Glazed ceramic and decorative tile: inspect for crazing, worn glaze, metallic decoration, hand-applied finish, printed surface, or already dulled patches. “Glazed” does not mean immune to wire, abrasives, or cleaner chemistry.
Porcelain and unglazed ceramic: a hard tile body can still have a polished, textured, sealed, or factory-treated face. Use its care sheet.
Natural stone: determine whether it is marble, limestone, travertine, slate, granite, quartzite, or another stone, and whether it is honed, polished, textured, or sealed. The Natural Stone Institute’s care guidance warns that acid can etch calcium-carbonate stones and recommends neutral cleaner or stone soap as the general starting point. Even stones usually classed as siliceous may contain acid-sensitive minerals. Wire can scratch or leave a visible change in polish before the grout looks cleaner.
Metal trim, drains, faucets, shower frames, fasteners, and decorative inlays: cleaners may discolor, etch, or corrode them, and a grout brush can scratch a polished or plated finish. Cover or remove what the cleaner label tells you to protect, keep every wire brush off the metal, and rinse incidental contact immediately if the product instructions permit.
Sealant at corners and changes of plane: flexible caulk is not grout. Do not wire-brush it or “clean” a split bead into service.
Painted walls, cabinets, wood trim, countertops, and fixtures: mask or shield them against splash and runoff. Protection has to survive the cleaner, not merely stop water.
If the surface cannot be identified, treat it as sensitive: compatible neutral cleaner, nylon only, hidden test, no assumptions about acid or wire.
Sort the deposit before selecting the cleaner
Use a dry white cloth, a fingernail at a hidden point, clean water on a small area, and close light. Do not start with a bottle.
Loose grit, hair, dust, and tracked soil sit on the surface and vacuum away. Remove them dry so they do not become abrasive slurry under the brush.
Soap, body oils, cooking oil, detergent residue, and ordinary grime smear, feel slick, or darken the recessed joint. These are cleaner-and-agitation problems. The correct cleaner is one labeled for the grout *and* every adjacent surface.
Mildew, mold, or other biological surface growth may appear spotted, dark, pink, orange, or slimy, but color alone does not identify an organism. Clean visible surface growth with a product approved for the assembly and fix the moisture and drying condition that supports it. Growth returning from behind the tile, a musty wall, soft backing, or a spreading shadow is not a brush problem.
Efflorescence is a dry, pale, powdery or crystalline residue produced when moisture carries soluble material to the surface and evaporates. The Tile Council of North America distinguishes it from polymer residue and detergent film and directs the diagnosis back to the moisture path. If the dry powder vacuums away and later returns, repeated wet scrubbing is not the cure.
Grout haze or installation residue lies on the tile face and shoulders of a relatively new joint. Confirm the grout system and follow its manufacturer’s removal method and window. A cementitious haze remover is not automatically suitable for epoxy residue, natural stone, metal, fresh grout, or a sealer.
Failed grout cracks, powders, washes out, has open gaps, releases in grains, or moves with the tile. Cleaning cannot restore lost cross-section or bond. Do not keep brushing until the joint disappears.
Decide whether cleaning is still the correct job
Proceed only when the tile is stable and the joint is sound enough to withstand gentle scrubbing.
Stop and route the work when:
tile rocks, lifts, drums broadly, or the crack continues through several tiles;
grout sheds under light nylon brushing, a probe finds soft depth, or the joint has open sections;
an inside corner or change of plane has rigid grout where flexible sealant belongs;
water appears from behind the tile, the substrate feels soft, or biological staining returns from beneath the surface;
efflorescence returns after dry removal, indicating that moisture is still transporting salts;
the tile or stone is already etched, scratched, spalled, or losing a surface coating; or
the grout chemistry and surface cannot be identified well enough to choose a compatible cleaner.
A leaking or moving assembly needs diagnosis and repair before cosmetic work. Cleaning is maintenance; it is not waterproofing or structure.
Use one cleaner system at a time, exactly as its label directs. Never blend cleaners, never “boost” one with another bottle, and never add an unlabeled acid, bleach, ammonia, solvent, or detergent. The CDC’s bleach guidance says never to mix household bleach or disinfectants with other cleaners, to provide ventilation, and to check the label for gloves and eye protection. Its mold cleanup guidance repeats the no-mixing rule and calls for skin, eye, and respiratory protection appropriate to the work.
If another cleaner was used earlier, do not assume a rinse has made the surface safe for a second chemistry. Follow both manufacturers’ changeover or rinsing instructions; if they do not authorize sequential use, stop. Keep products in their labeled containers. Do not use a food container as a mixing cup. Do not spray a product into breathing air unless its label specifically permits that application. Open doors or windows and provide the airflow the label requires; a small shower enclosure is not “ventilated” because its door is open.
Wear the PPE on the cleaner label and safety data sheet. Gloves and splash eye protection are the normal floor for wet chemical scrubbing; the exact glove material, respiratory protection, protective clothing, and ventilation depend on the selected product and cannot be invented by a generic grout guide. Stop immediately for eye or skin burning, coughing, dizziness, breathing trouble, or an unexpected strong odor; leave the area for fresh air and follow the label’s exposure and emergency directions.
The complete cleaning workflow
Protect the room and establish a clean-water path
Remove towels, bath mats, food, toiletries, and loose objects. Vacuum dry debris from shelves, ledges, floors, and the joint itself. Cover adjacent paint, wood, metal, countertops, and fixtures as the cleaner label requires. Keep the drain closed or protected if the product must not enter it; dispose of spent cleaner and rinse water by the label and local requirements rather than assuming every chemical can be poured away.
Set up separate clean and spent-water zones. On a wall, work from the upper area down so dirty runoff does not cross finished work. On a floor, divide the field into sections you can apply, agitate, rinse, and extract before the cleaner dries. Keep a clean white cloth for inspection; a dirty sponge can make a joint look clean while laying the same soil back into it.
Remove dry material before making slurry
Vacuum loose grit and hair with a non-marking nozzle. For suspected efflorescence, start dry: gently loosen the powder with the 46807 nylon brush and vacuum at the brush, keeping the deposit from spreading across tile faces. On sound, hard grout where nylon does not release a crystalline deposit, the 46811 brass or 46812 stainless may be considered only after the hidden surface test described below.
Do not flood a salt deposit just to watch it disappear. Water can dissolve it temporarily and move it back into the assembly; recurrence points to a moisture source. The Natural Stone Institute likewise recommends dry vacuuming or dust removal for efflorescence on new stone and warns that water only makes the powder disappear temporarily.
Select the cleaner by deposit, grout, and boundary surfaces
Start with the least aggressive product whose label names the installed surface and the soil:
Ordinary soil and soap/detergent film: use the tile, grout, or stone maker’s approved maintenance cleaner. TCNA notes that soapy dirt often responds to clear-water rinsing plus brushing and that extraction removes dirty water more effectively than leaving it to dry in the joint (TCNA — Cleaning Grout).
Oily film: use a compatible cleaner whose label names grease/oil and the installed surfaces. Do not infer that a stronger alkaline product is safe because the tile body looks hard.
Biological surface growth: first remove ordinary soil, then use a product labeled for the organism class and surfaces if treatment beyond cleaning is needed. Repair leaks, improve drying, and remove failed sealant. Do not cover growth with sealer or caulk.
Efflorescence or mineral residue: remove loose material dry and diagnose moisture. TCNA cautions that acids used against efflorescence can attack cement grout, remove color, conflict with some sealers, and require protection of the user and fixtures; it says this work is often best handled by an experienced professional. Natural stone adds another acid boundary. A generic household acid is not this guide’s answer.
New-installation haze: use the grout manufacturer’s exact residue-removal instructions and a product compatible with the tile, grout age, sealer, metal, and stone. Do not transfer one grout family’s cleaner or timing to another.
No universal dilution, water temperature, dwell, coverage, or application method appears here. Those are product facts supplied by the chosen cleaner’s current label.
Run a cleaner-and-brush test ladder in a hidden area
Choose a sample that includes the grout joint and the actual tile edge; a test on grout alone cannot reveal a dulled glaze. If there are several tiles, trims, stones, or metals, each material needs representation.
Photograph or closely inspect the dry starting condition under the room’s normal light and a low raking light.
Test the selected cleaner at the label’s weakest or starting method only if the label provides such a range; otherwise follow its single stated method.
Agitate first with the 46807 nylon brush, keeping the face aligned with the joint.
Rinse, extract, and let the sample dry fully enough to judge. A wet surface hides scratches, etching, haze, and color change.
Approve the combination only if the dry tile, grout, stone, metal, and sealant show no dulling, scratching, bleaching, darkening, softening, coating loss, or unwanted color transfer.
If the deposit remains but the assembly is unharmed, repeat the proof with 46811 brass only where the surface instructions and hidden test allow wire.
Consider 46812 stainless only after nylon and brass have failed on a hard, sound joint and the dry hidden test proves that the adjacent faces tolerate it.
The ladder is not a promise that every surface will accept all three rungs. On polished or calcareous stone, crazed or hand-decorated glaze, plated trim, soft metal, or unknown finish, the ladder may stop at nylon. Hire a stone or tile restoration professional rather than proving the failure on the visible field.
Apply cleaner without flooding the assembly
Apply only to the section you can control, by the method and quantity on the label. Keep the product on the intended joint rather than atomizing it across the room. Wetting a sound joint for cleaning is not the same as flooding cracked grout, an open perimeter, a failed shower corner, or an unsealed stone assembly. If liquid is disappearing into a gap, stop and repair the gap.
Let the cleaner dwell for the label’s condition—not an invented clock—and keep it in the state the label requires. Some products must remain wet; some must not contact a surface beyond a stated condition; some require immediate rinsing. “Longer” is not a generic improvement. Reapply only if the label authorizes it.
Agitate by joint geometry, brush stiffness, and surface material
Set the grout brush in the joint and work lengthwise. The narrow face should follow the channel; broad cross-grain scrubbing spends effort on the tile and brings the bristle ends against the visible arrises. On a vertical grid, clean straight runs first and approach intersections from an already cleaned line. At corners, shorten the stroke and keep the brush off sealant and metal.
Use short overlapping strokes with enough pressure to keep the bristle tips engaged. A brush cuts or scrubs at its tips. Excess pressure bends the fill sideways, turns the bristles into skids, wears brass prematurely, and makes stainless more likely to jump onto the tile face. If progress stops, add dwell or repeat according to the cleaner label; do not answer stalled chemistry with body weight.
Match the rung to the material:
46807 nylon: routine cleaning, unknown assemblies, coated or scratch-sensitive boundaries, stone-compatible cleaner tests, epoxy/resin grout until its maker approves more aggression, and the first pass on every sound joint.
46811 brass: a stubborn deposit in sound grout after nylon fails, where the tile/stone/metal test proves the fine wire does not change the finish.
46812 stainless: the hardest remaining deposit in hard, sound grout or joint-scale dry mineral work, after both softer rungs and a dry inspection. Keep it out of corners, off fixture metal, and off any surface that failed the test.
For a joint much narrower than the brush face, a deeply recessed joint, pebble mosaic, irregular handmade tile, relief tile, or a joint beside a projecting metal profile, geometry may prevent the face from seating. Do not force the wrong face through the opening. Use a smaller surface-approved detail brush from outside this catalog, or route delicate work to a specialist. The 46807/46811/46812 trio is a grout-line system, not a universal brush for every crevice.
Rinse and extract until the cleaner is gone
Agitation releases soil; it does not remove it from the room. Lift the spent liquid before it dries back into the porous joint.
Follow the cleaner’s rinse instructions. Use clean water only where the label calls for it, changing it before it becomes a second cleaning solution. On floors, a wet vacuum gives the clearest separation between dirty solution and rinse water; use a surface-safe nozzle and keep electrical connections dry. Where extraction is not appropriate, blot and lift with clean white towels rather than pushing slurry into the next joint. On walls, catch runoff at the bottom and rinse from the top of the tested section down.
Inspect the extracted water and a final white-cloth wipe. Continue only as the cleaner label permits until the wipe no longer carries soil or cleaner film. Pay special attention to grout intersections, textured tile, the underside of metal trim, and low joints where residue pools.
Dry the field before judging it
Remove standing water and protection that traps moisture. Ventilate and circulate air without blowing chemical mist or contaminated dust into the occupied building. Let the assembly reach the grout, cleaner, stone, and sealer manufacturers’ required dry condition. No universal drying period is stated: joint depth, grout chemistry, sealer, room humidity, temperature, tile, waterproofing, and how much water entered the work all change it.
Judge only when dry, under ordinary and raking light:
Is the joint uniformly clean, or merely darker because it is still wet?
Did the tile lose gloss, pick up brush tracks, or show cleaner haze?
Does a white cloth still lift residue?
Is grout coming out on the cloth or brush?
Did a pale crystalline bloom return?
Did biological spotting return from a crack or from behind an edge?
If the tested process improved the joint without changing the surface, repeat it where needed. If it made no meaningful improvement after the label-authorized cycle, stop escalating. The remaining condition may be a stain in the grout, etched tile, damaged sealer, mineral movement, or grout failure—not removable soil.
Make the finish decision: leave, seal, color, or regrout
Leave clean grout alone when it is sound and the installed grout system does not call for a sealer. Cleaning does not create an automatic sealing requirement.
Seal only when the exact grout, tile/stone, and sealer manufacturers permit it. Some cementitious grout systems accept penetrating sealer; some factory-modified, ready-to-use, epoxy, or resin grouts have different requirements. Stone may need a compatible impregnator, while some tile faces must be kept free of sealer. The field must be clean, residue-free, and at the sealer label’s dry/cure condition. Mask fixtures as directed and wipe sealer from faces within its stated process. No universal cure time, recoat interval, coverage, or reseal schedule is invented here.
Color treatment is not cleaning. A grout colorant can change the appearance of sound grout, but it will not stabilize powder, stop moisture, eliminate salts, or repair missing cross-section. Follow the colorant system’s preparation and compatibility rules.
If the tile moves, diagnose the bed or substrate first. If the perimeter or change of plane failed, use flexible sealant—not field grout.
Soil-by-soil field cards
Routine kitchen or floor soil
Vacuum grit first. Prove a compatible maintenance cleaner and the 46807 nylon brush. Work the lines, rinse, extract, and dry. If the field re-soils quickly, look for detergent left by incomplete rinsing, greasy cooking aerosol, tracked grit, or worn sealer rather than reaching immediately for wire.
Shower soap film and body oils
Confirm that the “grout dirt” is not residue across the tile face as well. Use a product labeled for soap/body-oil soil and for the tile, grout, stone, metal, and sealant present. Ventilate, apply without flooding corners, dwell by the label, work the 46807 along the joint, rinse thoroughly, extract, and dry the shower after use. Brass or stainless does not compensate for the wrong cleaner.
Surface mildew or mold staining
Correct the leak, failed caulk, exhaust, or drying problem first or alongside cleaning. Remove ordinary soil before any labeled antimicrobial treatment. Use one product, ventilate, wear its PPE, never mix it with another cleaner, and keep it off incompatible stone or metal. If spotting penetrates soft grout, returns from behind tile, or accompanies a musty/soft wall, stop at the remediation boundary.
Photograph it dry, remove loose powder dry, and inspect the moisture path. Specialty acidic treatment is not a default grout-cleaning step: cement grout, calcareous stone, metal, sealers, and colored joints can all be damaged, and TCNA recommends extreme care and often professional handling.
New grout haze
Identify the installed grout and its age. Use only the grout maker’s procedure and a cleaner approved for every tile/stone/metal boundary. Test the face, not just the joint. Do not let a brass or stainless brush wander over the tile in an attempt to mechanically erase haze; haze is a chemistry-and-window problem first.
A dark line that remains after cleaning
Let it dry before calling it dirty. A permanent color change can be pigment, absorbed oil, metal stain, biological stain below the surface, old sealer, moisture, or worn grout. Repeating stronger cleaners without identification risks removing grout before removing the stain. A sound but permanently discolored joint may be a colorant or regrout decision; a soft or wet joint is repair work.
What goes wrong — and the actual fix
“The grout looked clean wet, then turned white again.” Suspect efflorescence, cleaner residue, or polymer/mineral film. Photograph it dry, try dry removal, rinse/extract ordinary detergent residue, and diagnose moisture. Do not keep dissolving a returning salt bloom.
“The dark spotting returned within days.” The moisture or organic-soil source remained, or growth is below the surface. Improve drying, repair the leak or sealant, and investigate the assembly. Stronger brushing is not source control.
“The tile looks dull only after it dries.” Cleaner attack, abrasive wear, or residue was hidden by water. Stop the process. Rinse only as the product maker directs and call the tile/stone maker or a restoration specialist; do not try to polish it back with a harder brush.
“The brush keeps climbing out of the joint.” The face does not fit the geometry, pressure is too high, or the bristles are riding bent-over. Shorten the stroke, reduce pressure, approach intersections from a clean run, or use a smaller surface-approved detail brush. Do not sacrifice the arris to keep using the catalog tool.
“Brass or stainless leaves tracks on the tile edge.” The material failed the test. Stop, return to nylon, and accept the remaining stain or use a specialist. A cleaner joint is not worth a permanent bright scratch beside it.
“The grout is coming out on the brush.” That is failed grout, not productive cleaning. Vacuum the loose material, stop wetting the opening, and route to regrouting after checking tile stability and moisture.
“The cleaner is not working, so I mixed in another one.” Stop, leave for fresh air if there is odor or irritation, and follow both labels’ emergency directions. Never continue agitating an unknown mixture. Chemical mixing is a hard refusal.
“The joint gets dirty again faster than the tile.” Cleaner may be drying in the recessed, porous line; rinse/extract more completely. Also inspect worn sealer, rough joint profile, oily soil source, and daily drying practice.
“The sealer turned cloudy or did not bond.” The field may have been damp, dirty, chemically incompatible, or over-applied. Follow the sealer maker’s removal/correction process. Do not add another coat over the failure.
“The whole shower still smells musty after the grout is clean.” The source is not the exposed joint. Stop cosmetic work and investigate hidden moisture, backing, penetrations, slope, and ventilation.
Buyer tests — choose the brush from the job, not the color of the handle
It is an escalation, not the everyday replacement for nylon.
It is the highest-cut, highest-consequence rung.
Wide tile faces are dirty but the joints are not: none of the three is the field tool. Use a manufacturer-approved non-abrasive pad, cloth, mop, or extraction tool and reserve the grout brush for the lines.
The grout is cracked, sandy, missing, moving, or wet from behind: buy no cleaning brush as the cure. Diagnose and regrout or repair the assembly.
You cannot identify the stone, glaze, grout, cleaner residue, or old sealer: the buyer decision is a test or a specialist, not stainless.
The honest kit for most sound household grout is the 46807, a surface-approved cleaner, clean rinse water, and extraction. The 46811 and 46812 exist for evidence that the softer system has reached its limit—not for impatience.
History — an ancient joint, a modern brush fill
The space between small tile units is older than the word “grout cleaner.” Roman and Byzantine mosaics were laid into layered mortar beds; work on the late Roman Lod Mosaic found guidelines and underpainting in the mortar beneath precisely placed tesserae (Metropolitan Museum of Art — the Lod Mosaic). The Getty Conservation Institute still teaches the maintenance of ancient mosaic pavements and compatible mortar repair (Getty — Conservation of Mosaics in Situ). The joint has always been both surface and structure: dirt collects at the recess, but cleaning that destroys the mortar destroys the work.
What is modern is the synthetic first rung of Hyde’s cleaning ladder. Nylon gave brushmakers a water-tolerant, nonmetallic filament for a job previously divided among natural fiber and wire. Hyde’s 46807/46811/46812 trio turns that long materials lesson into a selection ladder: synthetic scrub first, fine brass only when needed, fine stainless last.
