How to Caulk Interior Trim Before Painting
This is the paintable-acrylic-latex, interior-trim variant of the caulking job; the wet-area silicone variant is recaulk-a-bathtub-joint, and stripping any old bead first is remove-old-caulk. Written for the person doing the job.

Job: fill the gaps around interior trim — casing-to-wall, baseboard tops, crown-to-ceiling, opened mitres — so the finish coat reads as one continuous run of millwork instead of a set of shadow lines.
Time: an hour or two of gunning and tooling for an average room's trim.
Difficulty: neatness and restraint, not strength. Acrylic latex is the lightest-bodied material a caulk gun ever pushes, so the gun never labors and no force rating enters into it; the whole skill is a small tip, a steady pace, and tooling each run before it skins.

Everything else: the caulk itself — a tube labeled paintable acrylic latex (this store sells the gun, not the chemistry); a utility knife and a long nail to cut the spout and punch the inner seal on the three guns that carry no prep tools (the 46435 does both on the frame); a damp rag or sponge and a bucket of clean water for tooling and cleanup; painter's tape if you want guided edges; closed-cell foam backer rod for any gap deeper than it is wide; primer; and your finish paint.
Before you start: what caulk is for, and the one rule that decides the job
Why you caulk before you paint. Every place two pieces of trim meet — casing against wall, baseboard against wall, a mitre that opened a hair as the wood dried — leaves a gap, and a gap throws a shadow line that paint does not hide. Painting over an open gap only sharpens it, because fresh sheen makes the dark line read darker. A bead of caulk pressed into that gap and painted over does the opposite: it fills the shadow and lets the finish coat carry unbroken from wall to trim, so the whole assembly reads as one solid piece of millwork. This single step is the clearest line between a repaint that looks built-in and one that looks stuck-on — which is why finishers caulk the entire trim package before the finish coat, ideally over primer, so the paint fuses caulk, trim, and wall into one surface.
Use paintable acrylic latex — never silicone. This is the rule the job is built on. Paint will not stick to silicone. Silicone's surface energy is so low that latex and oil paints cannot wet it — the paint beads up, fisheyes, and lifts, and it does the same thing where it merely runs *beside* a silicone edge, so a silicone bead leaves a permanent unpaintable stripe down your finished trim. The interior-trim material is acrylic latex ("painter's caulk"), or a siliconized acrylic specifically labeled *paintable*: it takes paint invisibly, cleans up with water, tools with a wet finger, and flexes enough for the small seasonal movement a trim joint sees. This is exactly where interior trim parts ways with a tub — the recaulk-a-bathtub-joint job *wants* silicone, for waterproofing and movement, because nothing there gets painted; trim wants the opposite chemistry for the opposite reason. If a run of trim dies into a tub surround, end the silicone precisely where the paint will begin and switch to paintable caulk from there.
Caulk fills junctions; it does not fill holes. Keep the two jobs separate. The gap *between* two pieces — the junction line — is caulk's work. A nail hole, a dent, or a gouge *in* a piece of trim is filler's work: spackle or wood filler, sanded flush (fill-nail-and-screw-holes-in-drywall covers that). Caulk shrinks and sinks in a deep hole and will telegraph a dimple through the paint; filler cracks if you smear it across a moving joint. Right material, right place.
Deal with any old caulk first. If the gaps already hold a failed, cracked, or painted-over bead, new caulk over old fails the way paint over grease fails — strip it to bare substrate first, which is its own walkthrough: remove-old-caulk (that guide also carries the asbestos boundary for beads older than about 1980). And if getting the trim paint-ready means scraping or sanding old paint in a home built before 1978, that crosses the lead-paint line: dry sanding and dry scraping are exactly the practices the EPA prohibits — work wet, contain the dust, and know that paid renovators disturbing more than about six square feet of interior surface must be lead-safe certified. That is an abatement decision, not a caulking technique.
Caulking the trim
Load and prep the gun — the short version. Cut the nozzle small and at roughly 45°, at the very tip first: every millimeter lower you cut makes the hole — and the bead — permanently bigger, and a trim joint wants a fine bead. On the 46435 the built-in spout cutter and seal punch do this on the gun; on the 46400, 46410, and 46310 a utility knife cuts the tip and a long nail punches the inner foil seal (skip the puncture and the first hard squeeze escapes backward, out the plunger end). Seat the cartridge, run the rod up to contact, and lay a test bead on scrap or cardboard until the size matches your gaps. The secret is that bead size comes from *travel speed*, not trigger force: set a working pressure, keep the nozzle moving at a constant walk, and top the trigger up in rhythm — when the bead fattens, speed up; when it starves, slow down; never chase it with the trigger. On the ratchet guns (46410, 46310) let the stroke meter the feed — one full pull delivers a repeatable dose, so you can pace a baseboard like a metronome. Work gaps you can reach in one clean sweep — a casing leg, a baseboard between two stops — and treat every corner and mitre as a full stop rather than swinging the nozzle around it. And at every single stop, release the pressure before you lift the nozzle: the thumb lever on the 46435 and 46400, the rod release on the 46410; on the 46310 the StopDrip does that job for you — its whole reason for existing is the ratchet's clean advance without the drool laid across your just-caulked casing.
Tool each section within its skin time — once, firmly. A tooled bead is not just neater; the pass presses the caulk into both faces of the joint and sets the bond the bead lives on. Acrylic latex skins in minutes, so the rhythm is *gun a section, tool that section, move on* — never gun the whole room and come back. One steady pass with a damp fingertip (plain water — acrylic cleans up with water) draws the excess off and leaves a slightly concave line flush to both surfaces; wipe the finger and re-wet between passes. The 43660 Caulk Aid's padded end does the same with a consistent radius and no caulk on your skin; either way the profiles, the corners, and the tape trick live in the tool-and-smooth-a-caulk-bead guide. If you taped for guided edges, pull the tape now — low, away from the bead, while the caulk is still wet.
Wipe down and check. Run a barely-damp sponge along each tooled joint to lift the faint smear tooling leaves on the trim face — dried acrylic haze reads through paint as a dull halo. Rinse the sponge constantly and change the water when it clouds. Then sight down every line in raking light: continuous, flush, no gaps skipped at the mitres, no bead sitting proud on top of the joint instead of down in it. A skip found now is a ten-second dab; found after the finish coat, it is a redo.
Let it reach paint-ready cure, then paint. Acrylic latex has to lose its water before paint goes over it, or the finish coat cracks over a bead still shrinking underneath. Most painter's caulks are paint-ready in under an hour, but a fat bead, a cold room, or high humidity stretches that — and the tube's label is the contract, not this page. When the bead is firm and no longer cool or tacky to a knuckle, prime any raw caulk if your system calls for it, then lay the finish coat straight across trim, bead, and wall in one plane. The gap is gone and the trim reads as one piece — which is the entire reason for doing this before you painted, not after.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
"The paint fish-eyed and peeled right along the caulk line." Silicone, not acrylic. Paint cannot wet it — over it or beside it. No topcoat fixes this reliably: cut and strip the silicone (remove-old-caulk) and re-bead with paintable acrylic latex before you paint.
"The bead cracked down the middle after the paint dried." The gap was deeper than it was wide, so the caulk cured bonded front-to-back with no free length and normal movement split it — or you filled a wide gap in one heavy pass and it shrank as it dried. Deep or wide gaps get closed-cell backer rod pressed in first, so the bead is correctly sized and touches only its two faces; the sizing rule and the two-surface reasoning are in seal-a-movement-joint-with-backer-rod. A very wide gap also cures better in two thin passes than one deep one.
"It skinned over before I could tool it." Sections too long, or a hot dry room. Dragging a tool through a skinned bead tears it instead of smoothing it — gun shorter sections and tool each before the next; if a run already skinned, let it cure and lay a thin corrective pass rather than fighting it.
"The gun keeps oozing onto finished trim between joints." Stored pressure — the ratchet's signature vice. Release the rod the instant each bead ends; if that ritual wears on you, the 46310 StopDrip claims exactly that ooze away, and the 46400's and 46435's thumb levers dump it fastest.
"There's a dull haze on the trim beside every joint." Caulk smear that dried before you wiped it. Keep a damp sponge moving with you and clean each joint's edges while the caulk is fresh; once it dries on the face it shows through paint.
"I caulked the nail holes and they dimpled." Caulk shrinks into holes. Those are filler's job — spackle or wood filler, sanded flush (fill-nail-and-screw-holes-in-drywall). Caulk is only for the junction lines.
The history footnote (because these pages should be worth reading)
The seamless painted-trim line is younger than the trim itself. For most of the history of millwork, a painter's only gap-fillers were stiff, shrinking, crack-prone putties and plaster — which is why old painted trim so often wears a fine dark seam at every joint. "Painter's caulk" is just that acrylic latex, sold for the job it does best.
