DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Walls, and volume work of any kind. Foam holds too little paint to cover a wall without maddening reloads, and it isn't built to. Walls belong to the fiber covers — 3/8″ for the field, up the ladder from there.
  • Any textured surface. A continuous foam face bridges texture and rides the peaks; on knockdown, stucco, brick, or block it leaves the valleys bare and mottles the finish. Foam is a dead-smooth-surface tool, full stop.
  • Fast-drying flat latex, overworked. Roll a big flat-latex job with foam and you fight bubbles and reloads both; that's a fiber cover's job. Foam's home is the slow-leveling finish coat, not the fast wall coat.
  • Heavy single-pass builds. The thin foam wall can't lay a thick film in one pass, and trying makes runs and bubbles. Two thin coats, always.

How the pros run it

01

Slow strokes — the first rule of foam

Foam driven fast aerates the coating; bubbles that pop after the film starts to set leave permanent craters. Move deliberately. Thin coats, built up. The 1/8″ foam wall holds little coating by design; expect two thin coats to build what one heavy napped coat would, and take them — thin is the point, not a limitation. Damp, never dripping. Foam saturates and releases fast, so the tray's ramp does more metering than the well; work the excess off until the face is evenly damp. Don't overwork it in fast latex. Foam's boundary is waterborne paints that skin quickly — overworking foam in fast latex bubbles the film; this cover is happiest in the slower-leveling enamels, varnishes, and stains it's built for. Cleaning: water-based coatings rinse out of foam readily; in solvent work the phenolic core lets you clean and keep the cover, though foam is cheap enough that the trade often treats it as semi-disposable in oils. A dried foam face is finished — wrap it airtight between coats.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Rolling a gloss door or clear-coating furniture — is this the one?
Yes: foam leaves no fiber marks, the 1/8″ wall lays the thinnest leveled film, and the phenolic core survives solvent enamels, varnish, and poly (§2).
What's a phenolic core and why care?
It's a resin-bonded core that doesn't dissolve in the solvents of oil/alkyd/urethane coatings — the core cardboard covers can't survive (§1, §2c). Exact chemistry-claim wording is pending verification .
Why do I get bubbles/craters?
Foam worked too fast or too dry, or in fast-drying latex — slow the stroke, keep it damp, take two thin coats, and use foam in slow-leveling finishes (§3).
Can I paint a wall with it?
No — foam holds too little paint and bridges any texture; use a fiber cover for walls (§4).
99901 or 99902?
Thinnest finish on a critical flat panel → the 1/8″ 99901; more coating and fewer reloads on a big smooth surface → the 3/8″ 99902 — subject to a record conflict on the 99902's stated thickness (§5, §8).
