The cover's nap carries the paint; the cylinder's ends and interior should stay dry. Let the mesh meter. Two or three moderate passes — mashing the roller into the grid wrings it dry and bows the rig; the mesh works by contact, not force. Keep the mesh open. The grid meters only while paint passes through it; if buildup starts bridging the openings mid-session, a rap on the rim or a quick blade pass re-opens it. Watch the reservoir depth. Does it take a 9-inch roller?
Unverified — honestly, even that. Bucket grids as a class are built around standard 9" covers, but this page promises no fit until the grid is measured; the 18" tier is documented in the roller line and is not promised here either.
Why not just use a bigger tray?
Reservoir, returns, and rhythm: gallons below instead of a quart in a pan, excess shed through the mesh instead of pooling on a ramp, and reloads in seconds without a walk (2b). Above a couple of gallons per session, the tray line itself sends you here.
Can I leave the roller in the bucket overnight?
No — park it on the grid above the paint for pauses (2d), and give it a real clean at day's end. Swimming covers drown, and open buckets skin.
How do I clean the grid?
Over the bucket: squeegee the mesh down so the held paint returns, then wash immediately while wet (2e). Cured paint is metal's forgivable failure (class knowledge) and everyone else's permanent one.
