Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Full walls and ceilings — the 3-inch cover is a finish-surface tool, not a wall roller.
  • Textured surfaces — a 1/4″ nap paints the peaks and skips the valleys of any real texture; that wall wants a longer nap.
  • Rough masonry — wrong nap and a fine cover that snags on aggregate.
  • High-volume coverage work — several doors in wall paint or long baseboard runs will starve a 1/4″ cover and turn the day long; that's a 3/8″ cover's or a wider cover's job.
  • And it isn't a tight-access reacher — a standard metal mini frame doesn't follow behind a radiator (that's the 94016's long frame).

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Prep harder than you think

a 1/4″ nap on a smooth surface shows the substrate — sand, vacuum, tack-wipe, prime. De-lint the cover: even a lint-free woven cover carries loose manufacturing fiber; tape-peel or wash-and-spin before the first load, because a fiber in a gloss coat is a defect you'll feel. Load light, coat thin: the 1/4″ nap holds little paint on purpose — reload often, take two thin coats, and never scrub a starving cover across a door. Lay off one direction and leave it: leveling finishes polish themselves if you stop touching them; the metal frame keeps the pass even. Wash and keep: scrape, rinse the woven cover to clear water, spin, stand on end; spin the cover off the metal frame rather than letting it dry glued on.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why the 1/4″ nap?
It lays the thinnest, flattest, lowest-stipple film — the near-sprayed finish that doors, cabinets, and gloss trim want. It carries little paint, so coat thin and reload often (§2a).
How is this different from the 94022?
Every piece steps up: 1/4″ vs 3/8″ nap, lint-free Pro vs general-purpose cover, metal vs plastic frame. Finish work vs budget coverage (§5).
Can I paint walls with it?
No — 3 inches and a 1/4″ nap are for smooth finish surfaces, and it'll starve on wall acreage. Use a 9-inch system (§4).
My door finish has stipple/fiber — why?
Wrong nap or a shedding cover elsewhere; here, prep harder, de-lint the cover, and lay thin coats (§3). This kit's lint-free 1/4″ is built to avoid both.
Reuse it?
Yes — the metal frame and woven cover are durable goods. Scrape, rinse to clear water, spin, dry on end (§3).
What's in the box?
A plastic tray, a metal mini frame, and one 3″ Pro cover in a 1/4″ nap — A. Richard's named 3-Piece Pro Mini Kit (§1).
