Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Oil enamel and varnish that must lay off perfectly flat — natural bristle owns that finish (Richard PREMIER black-bristle 80452-class, Hyde Extra white 47380-class).
  • Same finish ambition, opposite fill, decided entirely by whether the can is water- or oil-based.
  • Rolling-scale coverage — a 2" brush is a cutting and detail tool, not a field applicator.
  • Rough, thirsty exterior fields — for laying heavy paint over broad siding, an oval carries far more (see the Fat Boy and Optimum Ellipse ovals).
  • Muntin bars — too wide; size down to 1-1/2".

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Pencil grip, fine control

the finish line is a wrist movement, not an arm swing. Load a third and tap, never wipe the brush dry on the rim, which strips the belly of the paint that feeds a smooth cut. Long point to the line, one pass — a single confident stroke lays a better line than three nervous ones. Tip off the trailing edge of every stroke to lift any mark and let waterborne paint self-level. Keep the edge wet; with fast low-VOC finishes, cut shorter runs and blend before the paint sets. Between colors and at breaks, don't let paint dry in the heel — a finish brush is only as fine as its point, and the point is protected at the heel (§5 care note).

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why a "finish" brush — what changes?
The tier is about the quality of the cut line — control, release, a point that stays true. Buy up when the line will be seen.
Latex or oil?
Water-based. Oil/varnish want natural bristle.
2" or the 2-1/2" workhorse?
2" for control and trim-scale rooms; 2-1/2" (PRO MILLENIUM 80803) for covering long wall cuts fastest.
CONNOISSEUR EXTRA vs ULTRA?
ULTRA upgrades the filament to SRT for the finest lay-off; EXTRA is the polyester-nylon finish standard.
Muntins?
Too wide — use a 1-1/2".
