CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Hardened 14 gauge high-carbon steel blade. Ground and tempered to precise tolerances. Smooth hardwood handle. Blade is secured in place with compression cutlery rivets. Used for heavy duty cutting applications. Blade measures 4"x1-1/4"x.083".
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Reach. Four inches is short by design; deep slabbing of foam and paper rolls belongs to the eight-inch square points, whose length the H404 deliberately trades away for mass.
  • Fine or detailed cutting. A broad, heavy blade is the wrong tool for close trimming, shaping, and skiving — those are the small square points and the skivers.
  • Precision belt splicing. Opening a cover on a scribe line wants a longer square-point edge; the mill knife is for brute portioning, not the step splice.
  • Scraping, prying, or striking — it is a cutting edge, however stout, in a wooden handle.
  • Generic light cutting. If the work isn't heavy enough to break a normal knife, you're paying for mass you don't need; buy a standard square point or feed a utility blade.

How the pros run it

01

Force, close to the hand

This is a short, powerful knife — plant the material, keep the cut in front of you, and drive the broad edge with a full fist; its whole design is about putting concentrated force into heavy stock, not reaching. Keep the off hand out of the line. Heavy forceful cuts through dense material break free hard; the steadying hand stays clear of and behind the blade's path. Progressive strokes on the toughest stock — even a stiff blade cuts dense, layered material better in deepening passes than in one forced chop. Sharpen and maintain it. The .083" high-carbon edge takes and holds a keen edge from a stone; dress it square when heavy, abrasive stock dulls or rolls it, and wipe it dry after wet or tacky rubber work. The compression-riveted handle is the most durable in the line, but the blade is still maintained, not replaced — which is the whole point of buying an overbuilt knife instead of feeding disposables.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What makes it a "heavy duty" knife?
Width and construction. At 1-1/4" it is the broadest, stiffest blade in the line, at the heavy .083" gauge, anchored with the line's heaviest compression cutlery rivets. It is built to be leaned on all day.
Why is it only four inches?
Because it is a force knife, not a reach knife. Short keeps the mass concentrated and controllable. For deep, long cuts, the eight-inch square points are the tools.
How is it different from the 60450, which is also 4" × .083"?
A quarter-inch of blade width (1-1/4" vs 1") and the compression-riveted handle. That width is stiffness; buy the H404 where the narrower knife flexes or loosens under heavy stock.
Will it splice a conveyor belt?
For brute portioning of heavy rubber, yes; for opening a cover cleanly on a scribe line, a longer square point (60780/60810) is better. Different cuts.
Does it need sharpening?
Yes — it's high-carbon steel and a maintained knife, which is the reason to buy it over feeding disposable blades on abrasive work.
Will it rust?
High-carbon cutlery steel: hone it, wipe it dry after wet or tacky work.
