dip a third to half the bristle length, tap each side against the inside of the pail (don't scrape it flat on the rim — that wastes the oval's capacity and unloads the tip). Lay on, then lay off: flow the paint on, then make light, single-direction finishing strokes to level it — with fast-dry paint, lay off promptly and then leave it alone; brushing back into setting paint is what makes ridges. Keep a wet edge: work in manageable lengths and always join wet to wet, because low-VOC paint gives you less open time than old oil did. The care rule that decides how long it lasts: a brush dies at the heel, not the tip — paint left to dry where the filaments meet the ferrule splays the brush permanently. Wash it out promptly (warm water and a little soap for latex), comb the filaments straight from the heel out, spin or shake dry, and store it hanging or flat in its keeper so the taper stays true.
