Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • High-Density Wire Bristles: More bristles per square inch for maximum cleaning efficiency.
  • Stainless Steel Bristles: Corrosion-resistant, ideal for tough and wet jobs.
  • Ergonomic Soft-Grip Handle: Ensures comfort and reduces hand fatigue during extended use.
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Broad, open surface area at speed. The compact 3-1/4"×1" face is built for detail and control; for scrubbing a large flat field, the bigger hardwood-handled 46846 (5-3/4"×1-1/2") covers ground faster. Match the face to the field.
  • Production descaling of large structures. For heavy, wide-area rust removal, a powered wire wheel or cup brush, needle scaler, or abrasive blasting outpaces any hand brush — the 46835 is prep and detail, not production stripping.
  • Delicate or soft substrates. Steel wire scars aluminum, soft brass, wood, and finished surfaces — it's a ferrous-and-hard-surface tool. And for spark-controlled atmospheres, a steel brush is the wrong tool entirely; non-sparking work needs brass, which is a different aisle.
  • Fine finishing. The scraper nose is a lift-what-the-brush-missed edge, not a dressed finish scraper — hand off for finish-quality work.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Wear eye protection — this is the live hazard

Wire brushing throws two things at your face: the rust, scale, and paint particles you're removing, and the individual wire bristles that fatigue and break off a working brush. Impact-rated glasses or goggles, always; this is not optional and not the tile-dust hazard — it's steel slivers. Brush with the tips, not the sides — let the bristle ends cut; mashing the brush flat just bends wire and slows the cut. Overlap strokes and keep the face moving so you cut evenly. Switch to the scraper nose deliberately — when the brush is polishing instead of lifting, that's the signal, not more downforce. Feather and prime same-day. Respirator for the dust, especially on rust and any suspect old paint. After use, if the bristles are carbon (see ), wipe and keep the tool dry — a rusted brush sheds particles that contaminate the next clean surface.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Carbon or stainless bristles?
The model name and family say high-carbon steel; the description says stainless — an unresolved conflict . It matters: carbon cuts hard and rusts; stainless resists corrosion for wet work and stainless substrates. Verify before you rely on the distinction.
What's the scraper for?
Lifting what the bristles polish but won't remove — a scab of scale, a weld bead, a stuck paint edge. Brush the field, scrape the holdout.
Do I need eye protection?
Yes — brushing throws particles and sheds broken bristle wire. Impact-rated glasses or goggles every time.
46835 or 46846?
46835 for detail, density, and the soft grip with finger protectors; 46846 for a bigger brush face and coverage.
Can I use it in a flammable area?
No — steel wire can spark. That's a brass-tool job.
