Set the shortest position that clears the work

A trapezoid blade is stiffest with the least reach; use the nose-tucked or mid position for control and save full-out for depth. Let the overlap nose do its job. Keep the supported base of the blade engaged — it is what stops flex under a hard pull; do not over-extend past the support for no reason. Flip, then replace. The trapezoid blade is double-ended — when one edge drags, reverse it for a second fresh edge before you spend a new blade. Renew at the drag, not after the cut has gone ragged. Retract every time; contain used blades. Slide the blade home the moment you set the knife down, and put spent double-ended blades in a sharps container — a used trapezoid blade is two live edges.
