Not for breaking bonded ceramic tile out of thinset — impact demolition belongs to the struck hammer scrapers (19430/19440/19450); a low-angle offset blade planes, it does not shatter a bonded bed.
Not a struck tool — its record describes an offset scraper, not a striking head, and nothing here hits it.
Not the tool to reach bare concrete — a cutback shadow in the pores, thinset, or epoxy ends at a rented walk-behind grinder or shot blaster with dust extraction, not a hand scraper.
Not a stand-up tool — the 12" handle is for kneeling; the 48" 19423 stands.
And never a substitute for abatement on suspect pre-1980s floors — the 2a boundary outranks every technique here.
Both hands over the 12" handle, weight over the head, blade 15°–30° to the floor so it planes the bond line and lifts a curl; steeper, and it skates or digs its corners. Ride the offset. The bend holds your wrists neutral, clears your knuckles, and adds pry-leverage — work with it. Wet is the method. Time softens the adhesives that soften, and wet work is the dust control the removal standard is built on; mist and re-wet rather than flooding. Reverse before you replace. Flip to the second edge at the first skate a wiped blade can't cure; load a fresh #19453 when both edges are gone. A mill file between reversals may buy time ("resharpenable" rides the family's contested identity row — reverse first, file as a maybe, pack as the plan). Never strike it. It is a planing tool; no copy here drives it with a mallet.

Offset scraper or hammer scraper?
Offset scraper — the 19424's own catalog record names it plainly, with no striking head. Every technique here is planing; nothing strikes this tool.
What blade does it take?
The reversible bright-plated #19453 5" blade, shared with the 12"-handle 19425 and the 48"-handle 19423. Reverse to the second edge; replace from the pack.
Can I take up ceramic tile with it?
No — its scope is floor adhesive and light-duty tile and linoleum that lifts by planing. Bonded ceramic in thinset is impact demolition (the hammer scrapers) plus a grinder.
The floor might be pre-1980s — what then?
Stop and test. The adhesive — cutback especially — can contain asbestos, and old slabs carry silica. Undocumented material gets sampled by an accredited professional first; a positive result is an abatement job, not a scraping job.
Is this the same as the 19425?
Functionally yes — the same 5"-head, 12"-handle bent-blade offset scraper running the #19453 blade. The 19424 is the discontinued original; the 19425 is the current SKU that superseded it in place. If you have a 19424, it does the job its successor does.
