How to Pour and Finish a Small Concrete Slab
This is a genuinely small-slab, manual-tool workflow. It does not design a slab, select a concrete mixture, replace a project specification, approve structural work, or turn four Hyde hand tools into a complete flatwork kit.

Job: place and finish one small formed slab whose design, materials, joint plan, finish, cure, protection, and acceptance method have already been approved.
Time: the concrete supplier, approved mixture, quantity, delivery method, weather plan, and project documents control the working windows.
Difficulty: the hand motions are learnable; coordinating an irreversible material is not. A competent lead must read concrete state, keep placement continuous, and stop finishing on bleed water. If the crew cannot complete the approved sequence while the material remains workable, the job is not small enough for this manual workflow.
It is not a screed, float, edger, or field trowel.
Even its size and class name are store-title-only.

If a required value or method is absent, stop and get it assigned; do not convert a web guide into a slab design.
Admission and form/base readback
Admit the job as a small manual placement
Walk the route from concrete arrival to the farthest point in the form. Confirm that material can be deposited near final position, the crew can work toward its exit, tools are staged, and nobody must cross finished work. Identify the lead authorized to call each gate.
Reject this workflow if the slab is structural, elevated, tied into a building system, unusually loaded, dependent on engineered reinforcement or load transfer, or too large or obstructed for one continuous manual placement.
Read back the approved finish. “Smooth,” “broomed,” “covered,” “exterior,” and “ready for coating” are not interchangeable. NRMCA says end use controls texture and exterior flatwork needs drainage and nonslip texture (NRMCA CIP 14 — Finishing Concrete Flatwork).
Before delivery, the responsible person compares the work to the current approved documents:
forms and screed guides are secure, clean, at assigned geometry, and accessible for the strikeoff path;
base or subgrade preparation is accepted;
reinforcement, isolation, and embedments match their approved locations and support;
the joint layout, joint-creation method, responsibility, and trigger are understood before placing starts;
finish references, acceptance instruments, curing materials, protection, and contingency supplies are present.
This is a readback, not a substitute specification. NRMCA puts preparation before delivery and explains why joints must be planned; project requirements decide details (NRMCA CIP 6 — Joints in Concrete Slabs on Grade).
Verify the material and the weather plan
Match the truck ticket, batch label, or mixer record to the order. Confirm current material data and SDS. Do not improvise water, cement, dry mix, admixture, fiber, or color.
Confirm the weather decision from the approved plan immediately before placement. Temperature, wind, humidity, sun, precipitation, substrate condition, and protection can change setting, bleeding, evaporation, and curing.
Stage the tools in workflow order
Lay out placement tools first, early-leveling tools second, post-bleed float and edge tools third, then the specified finish and cure materials. Test equipment only as its manufacturer permits. Keep clean backups; cured residue prints defects.
Inspect all four Hyde tools. Remove loose, damaged, bent, nicked, corroded, or concrete-encrusted tools. Dry-rehearse positions, route, screed, edge, joints, exit, cure, and washout.
Place and strike off without creating tomorrow’s defects
Deposit near final position and keep the front continuous
Begin at the far end and work toward the planned exit. Place each load against the previous fresh material rather than making separated piles and dragging them together later. NRMCA directs crews to deposit concrete as near as possible to final location and warns that horizontal movement with a garden rake or other tined tool promotes segregation; use the approved square-ended shovel, come-along, or placement method instead (CIP 14).
Spread and consolidate to the approved method, especially at forms, corners, and embedments. The 18060 margin trowel can press material into a small form corner or fill immediately ahead of the screed, but it cannot certify consolidation.
Do not “fix” consistency by wetting a stiff area or dusting dry material onto it.
Strike off to the approved guides
Rest the straight screed on the authorized guides. Draw it with the controlled sawing motion described by NRMCA while maintaining enough concrete ahead to fill lows. A second person supplies a genuine low from the same accepted placement and removes excess; the 18060 handles only small corner and edge corrections. Do not overwork the surface or repeatedly pump paste upward.
Read back the struck surface: all areas reached, no visible unfilled edge or displaced embedment, guides stable, exit intact. “Looks flat” is not a tolerance.
Perform early leveling, then stop
Use the specified bull float, darby, or highway straightedge soon after strikeoff and before bleed water appears. Keep the working surface as flat as the tool and material require; this pass embeds large aggregate, evens highs and lows, and prepares the slab.
Then stop. Remove placement traffic, clean tools without dripping wash water onto the slab, and protect the surface according to the approved evaporation/weather plan. Do not edge, hand-float, steel-trowel, broom, sprinkle water, or broadcast cement merely because the crew is waiting.
Read the concrete, not a stopwatch
Enforce the bleed-water gate
Bleed water can appear as sheen, beads, or water under a temporarily covered test area. NRMCA’s gate is unambiguous: subsequent finishing waits until bleeding stops and no sheen remains; working during bleeding can cause dusting, scaling, crazing, delamination, and blisters (CIP 14).
No clock value belongs here. The waiting period changes with the mixture and ambient conditions. A surface that has lost visible sheen quickly in hot, dry, or windy conditions may be drying faster than bleed water rises; that is not proof the slab is ready. Invoke the approved evaporation response rather than finishing a crust over active bleeding.
Float after bleeding has ceased
When the assigned gate is satisfied, hand-float with the specified float. This pass levels and prepares the surface for its final finish. Keep the work coherent: address ridges and minor surface variation while the material responds, without digging up aggregate or adding water.
If the float tears, rolls aggregate, leaves deep tracks, or brings water to the top, stop and reassess timing, material state, and method. Do not “heal” the symptom with wetter paste.
Edge the formed perimeter
Where the documents require an eased formed edge, use the 18060 margin trowel only if the approved method calls for separating concrete from the form or feeding a small material-starved spot. Then run the 18040 edger with its form-side edge guided consistently and its plate controlled so the curved ends do not gouge. Overlap strokes and keep the same orientation around the perimeter.
If the edge tears, pulls aggregate, or slumps after the tool, stop: the material state, consolidation, or edge supply is wrong. Repeated pressure is not a substitute diagnosis.
None of the four registered Hyde tools is a groover or saw. If the joint plan or responsible operator is missing, the placement should not have been admitted.
Apply only the specified final finish
For a float or broom finish, use the specified texture tool and reference sample; the Hyde flat trowels may have no final-surface role.
For a specified steel-troweled surface, choose between the registered flat tools honestly:
use the 18000 as the documented primary field steel;
use the 18520 only as a gated, class-level flat-trowel option where the responsible finisher wants the more compact working role.
Make the first steel pass with the blade nearly flat so it closes and planes rather than plows. Return only when the project-approved material-state gate permits another pass; increase pressure and tilt progressively only as the surface stiffens and the specified finish requires. Keep strokes overlapping and work toward the exit without kneeling directly in fresh concrete.
Stop when the specified texture and acceptance condition are reached. Repeated steel passes can make a surface smooth and slippery when wet, create dark trowel burns, chatter, blisters, or delamination. NRMCA specifically cautions that exterior slabs typically require texture and that trowel finishing air-entrained concrete demands proper timing (CIP 14).
Read back the finish and begin curing
Photograph as the quality plan requires.
Begin the specified cure as soon as finishing is complete and the surface can accept the approved method without damage. NRMCA defines curing as maintaining adequate moisture and temperature so the mixture can develop its intended properties; its methods and duration vary (NRMCA CIP 11 — Curing In-Place Concrete). This guide intentionally supplies none of those values.
What goes wrong — stop, preserve evidence, and route the decision
Bleed water is present or returns under the test cover. Stop finishing. Protect under the approved plan and wait for the authorized material-state gate. Never broom, float, edge, or steel water back into the surface.
The surface crusts while concrete beneath is still plastic. Treat it as an evaporation/weather event, not proof of set.
A low appears behind the screed. Correct it during strikeoff with accepted concrete from the placement, then rescreed. Do not fill it later with water-rich paste, dry cement, or an unapproved patch.
Aggregate tears out at the float or edger. Stop and reassess timing, consolidation, and material state. The 18060 may feed a small hungry edge with accepted material, but cannot cure segregation or bad consolidation.
The edger leaves a trench or wavering rim. Check timing, form guidance, tool cleanliness, pressure, and stroke orientation.
Steel chatters, digs, or leaves dark marks. The blade may be too tilted, dirty, damaged, or being forced after the useful window. Flatten or stop as the approved procedure permits; more passes are not automatically better.
Preserve placement, weather, bleed, and finish records. Do not puncture and trowel over a systemic defect as if it were cosmetic.
The crew is falling behind. Do not add water or abandon the joint plan.
Weather moves outside the plan. Use the approved protection or stop response.
The surface later cracks, dusts, scales, or fails tolerance. Record the evidence; do not declare a cause without qualified assessment.
Cleanup, safety, and handoff
Wet concrete and cement can injure skin and eyes. Do not kneel or stand in wet concrete without the controls selected for the job, and follow the SDS response for exposure.
Do not turn “silica” into generic respirator copy. OSHA’s construction guidance says pouring and finishing material intended to remain wet, and isolated small-batch mixing, are typically below the silica standard’s action level under foreseeable conditions; cutting, grinding, drilling, crushing, dry sweeping, or other dust-generating work is a different exposure task (OSHA construction-silica FAQs, 29 CFR 1926.1153). This guide authorizes no dry cutting or grinding.
Before concrete hardens on them, clean the 18060, 18040, 18000, and gated 18520 by the approved method. Dry the tools, inspect the working surfaces and mountings, and store them against bending or corrosion. Do not chip cured concrete from a blade in a way that damages its working plane or creates flying debris.
Transfer the record to the protection owner.
Product fit and honest limits
The 18060 earns its place before and around the finish; it is the small-detail infielder, not the slab tool. The 18040 owns only a required formed edge. The 18000 is the evidence-backed field-steel choice when steel troweling is specified.
They do not design, consolidate, strike off, float, joint, texture, cure, protect, inspect, or approve. Product fit means knowing each tool’s phase without selling the union as the whole trade.
Can this guide tell me how thick the slab or base should be?
Loads, soil, drainage, frost exposure, adjacent construction, code, and design determine those values.
How much water should I add, and what slump or strength should I order?
None of those is a guide-level choice. The approved mixture and supplier control water, slump or consistency, strength, air, admixtures, and allowable adjustments.
When exactly do I start floating or troweling?
By the approved material-state gates, not elapsed time. Early leveling occurs before bleed water appears; later floating and finishing wait until bleeding has ceased and no water sheen remains.
Do I need both flat trowels?
The register links both. The 18000 has accepted Hyde evidence and is the primary field-steel role.
Is a shiny steel finish best?
No universal finish is best. End use, traction, exposure, mixture, coating system, and project specification decide.
Where do the control joints go?
The approved joint plan says. Joint type, location, depth, spacing, equipment, and timing are design and construction decisions outside this guide.
How long should I cure it, and when can I use it?
The specified curing system, mixture, conditions, and acceptance plan control duration, protection, form removal, loading, coating, and opening.
Is silica the main hazard while hand-finishing wet concrete?
Wet-cement skin and eye contact is the direct finishing hazard. Silica exposure depends on the task: OSHA distinguishes wet pouring/finishing from dust-generating cutting, grinding, drilling, crushing, and cleanup.
