Is this the right tool for your job?

✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Overhead and reach work. The 8-inch handle is fixed — there is no socket, no thread, no pole. For ceilings, high walls, and gable peaks you want a chisel that runs on an extension pole: the bent 12070 or the straight extra-heavy-duty 12072.
  • Glazing rabbets and narrow channels. At a full 3 inches the blade is far too wide to sit in a window's putty rabbet; that is the 1-5/16-inch brass 12040's channel, or a narrow chisel one aisle over.
  • Prying, and being struck. It is a scraper, not a wrecking bar and not a struck tool. Prying belongs to the 45600 bent pry bar; hammering a blade along a surface belongs to the die-cast hammer scrapers (19430/19440/19450). Drive the 12050 with your body, never with a mallet on its handle.
  • Filling and finishing. A chisel scraper cannot spread compound. Skim, glaze, and fill are the flexible-knife trades on the putty-knife rack.

Angle

low. The chisel is meant to shear under material, not chop into it — 20–30° for most work, flatter to shave. Direction: push, always; this is not a pull scraper, and dragging it backward does nothing. Grip: palm over the handle for a straight drive, second hand added for power. Edge care: the blade is high-carbon steel and it is a fixed, filed edge — a career tool, not a consumable. Dress it square with a mill file the moment it dents or rolls; a keen, square chisel edge is what separates a scraper that shears from one that skids. Carbon steel dulls faster than stainless on abrasive old coatings but files back to keen in seconds — the traditional rhythm is scrape, file, scrape. Wipe it dry after wet work; carbon steel will bloom rust if you leave paste water or stripper on it overnight.

Straight or bent — which do I want?
Straight (this tool) for face-on surfaces you can drive into squarely; bent (12060) for floors, decks, and anything you work from above at an angle.
Can I put it on an extension pole?
No — the handle is fixed. Use the 12070 or 12072 for pole work.
Will it rust?
It is high-carbon steel; wipe it dry after wet work. The trade-off for that upkeep is an edge that files back to keen in seconds.
Can I hammer it or pry with it?
No. Drive it with your body; pry with a 45600; strike only the tools built to be struck.
Is it for applying filler?
No — it is a removal tool with no flexible twin. Filling is the putty-knife trades.
Can I use it on lead paint?
Only under lead-safe practice — see the RRP boundary in 2a.
