PRODUCT FIT · IS THIS THE RIGHT TOOL?Straight answers. If it's the wrong tool for your job, we'll say so.
The guidance below describes applications and limitations. For a match to your particular job or an existing tool, ask us to confirm fit.
A single hole. Fifty plates for one doorknob hole is forty-nine spares; that buyer wants the 09898 single. The 50-pack is for recurring work, not a one-off.
Fist-size holes. These are the 4-inch doorknob-class plates; a crew that also meets fist-size (3–4 inch) holes wants the 6x6 contractor box (09904) alongside this one, not this box stretched past its margin.
The physical limits of the plate. Everything the single can't do — dents, nail holes, curved/textured/overhead surfaces, holes past the bond margin, gloss walls where flatness is everything — the 50-pack can't do fifty times over. Quantity doesn't change the tool's boundaries (see 09898, §4).
bond margin is the whole game (an inch of sound wall around a ~2-1/2 inch opening); stroke across and past every patch edge, never into it; thin and wide beats thick and hopeful; prime before paint; inspect in raking light. The only thing the 50-pack adds is method consistency — a crew running a box of these should standardize the sequence so unit forty looks like unit one. Old walls (pre-1978) carry the same lead/asbestos caution; a patch-over disturbs almost nothing, which is a virtue worth preserving across every unit.
Asked before buying
BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Is the patch different from the single?
No — identical 4x4 aluminum-plate patch. The only difference is fifty in a box (09898 is one).
Who's this for?
Turnover crews, property maintenance, repaint-prep and punch-list crews, drywall repair carry — anyone who meets doorknob holes constantly and would rather stock than shop.
Does buying fifty make the repair easier?
No. Each hole still needs full prep, a wide feather, prime, and a raking-light check. The box means you don't run out mid-job; it doesn't shortcut the wall.
What if some holes are bigger?
Stock the 6x6 box (09904) too — these 4-inch plates won't stretch to a fist-size hole's bond margin.
