Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • 2 Phillips Tip: The bit features a #2 Phillips tip, optimized for driving drywall screws with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Compatible with Electric Drills: Designed for use with 1/4" or larger variable speed electric drills, making it versatile and easy to integrate into your existing toolkit.
  • Fits Standard Drywall Screws
CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • It is not a production driver.
  • A hanger driving thousands of screws a day owns a dedicated screw gun or an autofeed system, and this bit is honestly not that buyer's tool — the page says so, because that honesty is what makes "the screw-gun function for the rest of us" believable.
  • It is not a fastener for anything but drywall screws into a countersinkable face — the depth finder's whole logic is a paper face drawing in around a bugle head; it has no job in metal, hardwood, or a flat-head screw.
  • It does not set nails — that is the drywall hammer's dimpling face, a different tool for a different fastener (section 5).
  • It does not replace pressing the board tight — a depth-perfect screw into a sheet held off the stud still leaves a gap the taper inherits.

How the pros run it

01

Fast in, feathered out

Drive at speed and ease the trigger as the collar approaches the face — the variable-speed drill is not a convenience here, it is the requirement. Press the board home. The screw holds; it does not pull a floating sheet flat — bear the board against the framing beside each fastener. Let the collar decide. The depth finder lands on the face and stops the drive; trust it instead of watching the head, which is how heads end up proud or through. Keep the tip seated. A #2 Phillips cams out when it is not held square and firmly into the recess — cam-out chews the screw head and the bit both; steady axial pressure keeps it driving instead of stripping. Edges last, and off the edge. Fasten the field first and the perimeter after, keeping every screw the code-book distance back from edges and ends; an edge screw crushes the board out toward the open side. (Whether the tip and collar are replaceable or fixed, the bit's shank size, and its overall length are not claimed — no spec table beyond "#2 Phillips" and "1/4" or larger drill" ships until the record carries it.)

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What does the depth finder actually do?
It is a collar around the tip that lands on the board's face as the screw reaches depth and stops the drive there, so the head counter-sets just below plane and the paper draws in evenly instead of tearing. (Hyde's words are "depth finder" and "counter-sets" — this page keeps to them.)
Why does it need a variable-speed drill?
Because the technique is to run fast and feather the trigger at the end; a single-speed drill cannot ease off at the finish, and the screw ends up proud or through the paper.
My screws keep tearing the paper — will this fix it?
That is the exact failure the depth finder is built to stop, and Hyde's own repair video names this bit for re-fastening board when bad screw depth popped a seam. A torn-paper screw is dead — drive a companion two inches away and let the collar stop the rest.
Is this the same as a screw gun?
No — it turns the drill you already own into a depth-controlled driver. A production hanger driving thousands of screws a day owns a real screw gun; this bit is for the room, the ceiling, and the patch.
How is it different from a plain #2 Phillips bit?
The depth finder. A plain bit drives until your reflexes say stop; the collar makes the stop mechanical, which is the difference between a clean dimple every time and one torn screw a dozen.
Does it drive nails or set them?
No — nails are the drywall hammer's job (its crowned face dimples them). This is a screw tool.
